I didn't plan on going, but one of my best friends is moving to Chattanooga next week. He's been about 15 hours away for the past few years. We went to 8 Bonnaroos in a row together before he moved. We might go just to get together and relive the glory days. Top 10 I'd enjoy if we do.
1. Bon Iver 2. Muse 3. Broken Social Scene 4. Khalid 5. Sylvan Esso 6. Lissie 7. Chic 8. Moon Taxi 9. Old Crow Medicine Show 10. Japanese Breakfast
Hon. Mention: The Killers, Superjam, Sheryl Crow, Anderson .Paak, alt-J, Chromeo, and Rufus Du Sol
When I went to college as a freshman, I was super excited about meeting people that were into exciting music and stuff I'd never heard before. What happened instead was everyone's favorite band was the Killers. It was tremendously disappointing. There were some people who liked Radiohead, but they also seemed to think that they were super edgy and out there for that reason. I remember getting into an argument with people and having to enlighten them to the fact that Kid A was a #1 album and went platinum in its first week. They straight up did not believe that this was possible.
My sophomore year, I was talking to a very pretentious architecture freshman who was a big fan of Muse. I distinctly remember him saying something along the lines of "you know, some people don't like Muse, because they don't get it. You actually have to be smart to enjoy their music."
I went to a good school with lots of brilliant people who all work really hard and are very successful (more successful than I am, for sure). However, a lot of those people are corny as fuck. Fortunately, I DJed at the radio station, which had programming that was so esoteric that none of the gen pop students cared about it. Unfortunately, in my junior year the university sold our badass radio tower, which had a range from Galveston to College Station on a good day, to the University of Houston so that they could play classical music.
R.I.P. KTRU
I stumbled upon KTRU back in the day, and it definitely opened my mind to a few new musical directions.

Bonnaroo could’ve easily gotten Belle and Sebastian as an addition but dropped the ball.

I remember walking by the tent they played in 2015, and there was hardly anyone there at all 5 minutes before they were due to start. Maybe people piled in afterwards I don't know but.. That might have something to do with it.

Their crowd looked pretty energetic here (it won't let me link it with the timestamp, but they start at the 39 minute mark). But also the conflicts Saturday evening were brutal. I was at Jamie xx during Belle & Sebastian

Sad to have missed B&S. I remember walking by This and the crowd looking really fun. Myself and the people I was with pretty much went straight from Jamie to MMJ, though.

Definitely one of my favorite Bonnaroo shows. I had wanted to see them since the early 2000s, but it never worked out. From what I remember they had a big crowd that was for sure into it.

That did look fun!
Man.. those videos reminded me of how much fun I had in 2015.. Every set was steller.

Reminds me a lot of Goldfish last year. I showed up to other before their set and the crowd was tiny. I guess a lot of people had no clue who they were. I was like alright, well, I'll chill back here and smoke a minute before I hop in and grab a good spot. Ha. The intro starts, a few people trickle in, and then...then he starts whaling on that fucking sax and people just started sprinting in from all over lol. I feel really bad for anyone that walked by at first and decided against it. Fantastic set.

They were also poorly attended at Osheaga last year. Great set, but yeah they don’t really draw a crowd.
What's everyone's thoughts and feelings on this here article?
i guess what pisses me off the most about it is they are declaring a new "big 4" music festivals and then proceed to describe six festivals.
furthermore you can't deride coachella, bonnaroo, acl, and lollapalooza as being "complacent" and "homogenized", and then in the next breath declare gov ball, boston calling, and shakey beats as the torch bearers into the new creative and exciting future of american music festivals.
What's everyone's thoughts and feelings on this here article?
Shaky knees and riot fest have been consistently putting out good lineups that past couple years, with the sort of aesthetic I expected from bonnaroo lineups of old (if a little more genre-centric).
Outside Lands is basically just the spiritual successor of Vegoose - bonnaroo in a city, but more refined for the SF yuppy types. and wine.
nothing about gov ball makes me think it stands out from the "big four" and I definitely wouldn't call it a new "festival king." I dunno that I have ever felt compelled to travel to NY for GovBall. it just seems like more of the same.
Boston calling definitely punches above its weight class, but I still don't really see it as a destination festival.
shaky beats has been pretty much garbage every year.
What's everyone's thoughts and feelings on this here article?
I feel like it doesn't go into nearly enough depth in regards to what has happened in the festival scene and why (not that people here need a refresher) and its analysis of each of the festivals it discusses seems to miss the mark. I mean their Gov Ball description feels like it could've been copy and pasted from 2014. They don't even say a single thing about its lineup...

100%. I'd also add that none of these festivals offer on-site camping options, like Bonnaroo and Coachella. That is a really big deal for a lot of goers, myself included. My experiences at city festivals are much less memorable than camping festivals.

I think it's insane how Coachella gets counted out after 1 year of not having the A+ lineups it usually has. But then again, it is CoS..
I have personally always liked the Gov Ball lineups, but wouldn't call them a big 4.
The lineups I constantly look forward to outside the larger fests is: Shaky, Riot Fest and Osheaga. And they haven't disappointed within the past 4 years (since I've been attending festivals)

Forcastle is a great fest with fanstastic lineups the past few years. I really look forward to this year's fest for sure at least hitting 2 nights.
GovBall certainly gets unique bookings. Last year was very nice with Phoenix, Tool, Wu Tang , Mac Demarco Rae Sremmurd and the Kevin Parker vs Mark Ronson DJ set was live. They have a nice lineup this year with Jack White, N.E.R.D , The Yeah Yeah Yeah's , and a few others you won't catch at every fest.
We will see if Lolla books N.E.R.D but I fear that is a NYC Exclusive booking. I feel like they will land Arctic Monkeys, Foo Fighters, Eminem, and who knows who else at headline roles.
Shaky knees and BC just don't have any exclusives that make them must attend fests in my opinion.
Interesting find tho, Lynyrd Skynyrd announces farewell tour with no TN dates and wide open schedule during Roo Dates. What are the odds they are the legacy rock act/headliner up at the top?

Unless they bring Ronnie Van Zant back from the dead they won't be anywhere near the top line
