People seem to want the sets to be spaced out, ie pre-HL and LN, and I get that it makes it more novel if they are, but it's also more to plan around and more potential for conflicts that hurt an already-thin lineup. As long as there aren't repeats and the sets are reasonably long, it's probably ideal to have them back to back, tbh.
Bon Iver is going to conflict with literally every single act you want to see that day.
with two sets most likely late in the day this is unfortunately correct. You're looking at what, probably a 2.50-3 hour stretch of time, if they are back to back? The possibility of a conflict with Anderson Paak, Sylvan Esso, and Chic is high, IMO.
Maybe instead of worrying that one of the two sets might (will) conflict with something that you want to see, be all glass is half full and think of it as having twice as many chances to see him? You might not get to see everything but you should be able to see something.

Yeahhhh I've already begun mentally preparing myself to only see one of the sets in its entirety. The likelihood that at least one set will conflict with another must-see is too high.
That said, I definitely really want to see both sets. Regardless of if Justin Vernon has anything 'special' planned, even two normal unique Bon Iver sets would be an insane show both times.

I'm still gonna guess that Bon Iver is on the What Stage from 7:00-10:00pm. Em goes on at 11pm.
The sets have to be back to back. Logistically it makes no sense to set up the stage, take it down, and set it up again. They'll just do what Phish and Dead & Co have done and just have a 3 hour set with a 30 minute intermission. Anderson Paak will close the Which stage and I'll sadly have to miss him.

In this scenario, why would you have to miss .paak? He'd be playing the slot in between Bon Iver's second set and Eminem.

on the current tour a few Bon Iver billed stops have actually been JV solo sets (was the case here in DC). set-up was very minimal, missed some big songs - I was disappointed to not hear "8 (circle)" - but got an amazing raw performance with some cool additions: Johnny Cash cover, Leon Russell cover, absolutely monster solo/acoustic version of "Woods". I know in Norfolk he brought out Bruce Hornsby to do "I Can't Make You Love Me". he could do that for one set plus one set with the full group...the solo set requires minimal set-up and it would be best of both worlds?

this is absolutely the rational way to approach the issue. but i understand the desire to catch all of Bon Iver's sets. Two unique sets is a pretty cool thing, and I can see a big fan of Bon Iver wanting to be there the whole time, which can cause FOMO when thinking of potential conflicts.
It's like when Phish does a three night run, and my wife (not a Phish fan) asks me "what nights are you going?" and i look at her with my crazy eyes like anything besides all three is even an option (this happened two weeks ago).
I'm starting to lean towards Bon Iver having b2b LN sets on Which. 12:45-1:45 then 2:00-3:00. Tame was supposed to play 1-3 in 2016 so it'd be similar to that, and Flume started at 12:45 on Which last year.
Edit: I take that back actually. That would likely mean 2 of the top 3 acts of that day would be late night, which seems unlikely. I'm still thinking Bon Iver will be b2b sets, but preheadlining on What. Though that would mean the pre-headline show would be longer than the actual headline show.
I'm pretty sure MMJ pre-headlined for Mumford in 2015 and MMJ had the longer set between the two.. I think that's how it went down at least. So it's possible!

See, I've considered this. 1) This would allow him to play separate sets at different stages. 2) This would create variety in itself between the two sets.
It would also make sense if he was doing a For Emma set, as those songs can pretty much all be performed solo. Would honestly be a perfect scenario to have him do one full-band set with mostly 22AM and Bon Iver, Bon Iver material, and another on his own.

Both MMJ and Mumford were two hours. MMJ was also, of course, just one long set. One of the main reasons I don't see Bon Iver basically just getting one huge What slot is that they really don't perform for that long ever. As I've mentioned prior, most Bon Iver shows are hardly over an hour & 15 mins. Even with a 30-minute break in between, it'd seem out of character.

Has anyone else checked out the bottom third of the lineup and been pleasantly surprised? I think the undercard might not be as well known as I would have liked it to be, but I'm really enjoying what I'm hearing.

It's either this or Which > Headliner > Which. I really don't think they're going to haul his equipment between stages and I don't think he's going to get a 3 hour late night set.

There's some gems in there. There's actually a thread just for the purpose.

Yknow I’ve never given Sturgill Simspon a totally fair chance before, but I’ve been listening to A Sailor’s Guide to Earth this morning and I have to admit that I’m really enjoying it! I’m pretty surprised because generally speaking country isn’t really my thing. This is really beautiful though.

that's great, thanks for sharing. IMO good songwriting transcends genre. i only recently learned this.
Couple years back everyone here was freaking out about Taylor Swift's "1989", and I ignored everyone because Taylor Swift is just pop music right? Then Ryan Adams had to come along and teach me a lesson. When I heard he covered the whole record I gave it a listen (before I listened to Taylor Swift's) and was blown away. I then listened to Taylor Swift's and was again blown away. It was a humbling experience for me.
I suggest you also give Jason Isbell a shot if you haven't already. "Southeastern" or "Something More Than Free" are both fine places to start. Or checkout two songs not on those records, "Alabama Pines" and "Codeine".

technically it is, but Isbell wrote it and performs it live with his solo band regularly.
and while it is one of my favorite songs ever, and it was one of two songs that mentions my city of Mobile, AL by name, I think many of his solo songs are better.
