Has anyone else checked out the bottom third of the lineup and been pleasantly surprised? I think the undercard might not be as well known as I would have liked it to be, but I'm really enjoying what I'm hearing.
Rich Brian is super cheese. The fact that he was shamed into changing his chigga moniker is hilarious to me, and evidence of how clueless he is. He's another youtube/soundcloud/meme rapper that we could definitely do without. But dumb white kids love that crap so it sells.
Take my opinion with a grain of salt because my ideal lineup would pretty much be 00s southern rap like hypnotize minds and swishahouse. Not the epitome of lyrical content by any measure.

This...I feel like Juicy J is way overdue for Bonnaroo, and the whole HCP crew would be phenomenal! Project Pat is rapping again, so this needs to happen...throw in 8-ball and MJG and that's the perfect late night tent...I'm 36 y/o though, so they're not really booking to my demographic...

I don't like a lot of newer rap and I couldn't pick out exactly why until Erykah Badu said something in an interview about how lyrics are less important and it's more about the "vibrations" or whatever. I didn't really understand why some acts are as big as they are but they are clearly resonating with a large, younger audience.
Interview excerpt/quote:
You’re one of the rare musicians who manages to stay relevant with listeners younger than themselves. How much of that that is because you’re good on social mediaBadu’s Twitter account has a shade under 2.5 million followers. She’s got about the same number of followers on her Instagram. ?
Badu: If it’s anything, it’s that I understand where young people are coming from. I don’t try and fight it. What’s interesting to me about music and the younger generation is that what we hear on the radio is more about frequency and sound than words. People talk about “mumble rapA style from the warrens of SoundCloud featuring young rappers with somewhat unintelligible verses, hooks repeated into infinity, blown-out beats, and a willingness to try anything — stylistically and pharmaceutically. Influenced by trap and emo, well-known practitioners include Lil Yachty, Lil Pump, and the late Lil Peep. ,” but that’s because they don’t understand that the important thing is the vibration, not the words. The kids need vibrations, because their attention span is about three seconds.
Does that mean lyrics are less important than they used to be? Badu: I think so.
As a (former) massive Muse fan, I was truly hoping this new song would at least be decent. But no. It's fucking terrible, and yet still nothing like what I was expecting. Probably the most un-Muse they've ever sounded. Really hope no more than one more song is released before Roo cause this album is shaping up to be awful.
Granted, this is my initial reaction after listening to a shitty leak so I'll have to listen again later.

Also a huge fan, but not sure about this new track. It kind of reminds me of that new Fallout Boy sound they came back with after their hiatus. (not a compliment). It doesn't even sound like Matt, it's very different.
On the bright side, at the NME awards they said in an interview they're bringing some never before been used technology out on tour with them this year, supposed to be their biggest production ever.

I have zero doubt that their Roo set is gonna be fantastic. It’d just be better without any new underwhelming songs included.

I don't think it's that bad. Certainly better than Dig Down.
Yeah it's not as bad as my initial reaction. I was taken aback by how Matt was singing, and the loud woooaahs. I feel like if the riffs were more in the forefront it would be better. But yeah, definitely much better than Dig Down.

Memphis ain't that far either! SXSW did something cool for Swishahouse recently.

Has anyone listened to "Gatekeeper" by Jessie Reyez? Very straightforward song about workplace sexual harassment/abuse and I'm somewhat surprised I hadn't come across it before.

Also interested in seeing whether a few other acts show up on there: T-Pain, RUFUS, Justin Jay, hip-hop artists in general for starters.
It just occurred to me T-Pain could play DRAM's spot from last year
Yeeeep that’s where I have him in my mock rn. In general I’m interested in which hip-hop artists play the Other. Cos there’s a *lot* or dance/EDM this year, to the point where I’m not entirely sure any rappers will perform on The Other.

They still have it advertised as dance and hip hop. But yeah based on mock schedules, it seems like that stage is already completely filled with just edm.
