I’m not sure what to think of the Bon Iver billing. The wording of “two unique sets” makes me think that it could be two shows. But typically “two sets” just means it’s a 2.5-3 hour set time with 2 full sets in that given time. Them word unique being in there is what gives me pause.
Bon Iver definitely doesn't seem like the kind of artist to play a super long two-set show. That seems like the far more out of character and implausible option of the two
If it’s two separate shows I would imagine they’d bill it as such though. Example being Phish in 2009 was billed as 2 shows. They played a Friday LN and and a Sunday HL. In 2016 Dead and Co was billed as two sets which was one show.
I've already did the "I'm mostly going for the atmosphere and friends" thing. Twice, and the lineup was better both years.
Yeah I don’t blame you. Last years brunch just made me sad.
It is but I think enough folks from here now meet up at other festivals and events so it somewhat evens out. Seems like a lot of people I know are doing Boston Calling and/or Shaky Knees. You looking at either of those as well?
I don't hate this lineup. It's just not enough to get me back. Especially with the price increases and lack of late night options. I've changed my mind before but that was with lineups with a little bit more depth.

I’ve never seen a poster with so many names I’ve never heard of. Unreal how that part has slid so far in a few years. Is it the money I’d be worried about? A little bit. But really, if I’m going to put everything I have into getting my ass beat for 4 days on the hot farm to have a great time, I’d like Bonnaroo to put in the same effort. Like they used to do. Even the poster was possibly made in 12 minutes on an IPhone. But fuck it, whatever, nevermind.

Yeah I’m looking at Boston calling if I can find the money. It’s looking 50/50 at this point.
I understand if someone's not an Eminem fan, but it's really weird seeing so many reactions on social media from people thinking that Em isn't popular or relevant anymore. I legit saw a comment suggesting that he shouldn't be in the top 6. Eminem can release 3 more shitty albums and still debut at #1 and sell out stadiums on every cycle.
the way the machine works for artists who rose to prominence before say, 2010 or so, is that as long as you continue releasing records you'll never see any real slippage in your placement on a festival poster.
he'd have to stop putting out new music and only tour to fall off at all, and even that's not a guarantee, since we haven't seen Billy Joel put out a new record in about 25 years

A big negative for me the last 6 years is discovering bands, and never seeing them at Bonnaroo again. Black Angels, Vaccines, Django Django, many many more. Willing to bet 90% of these bands we’ve never heard of will never play Roo again.

Some will come back but I will admit to being one of the people who loved seeing bands "work their way up" the lineup. Bonnaroo is what introduced me to My Morning Jacket, Kings of Leon, Wilco, Black Keys, etc. and seeing them move up from stage to stage to getting to What has been awesome. I've also liked seeing smaller bands grow like Deer Tick and Portugal. The Man who have both worked their way up the billing.
It used to feel like "the people you see on Thursday will be bigger deals in the next few years here" and to some extent that's true (Alabama Shakes, Haim, Dawes, etc. have all moved up a bit in short time) but I can't recall how many recent acts have come back in bigger roles.
That doesn't necessarily mean the non-electronic stuff is amazing this year.
bad years for: punk, metal, world music, legacy acts, funk/soul, rock, pop
polarizing year for: rap (at this point in his career, a lot of people are done with Eminem, and Future has always been a love/hate artist as far as I can tell, and the fall off from there is steeeeep)
I think to some extent our opinions regarding the lineup having some many virtually unknown acts is skewed because they likely included all the Cafe acts on the initial lineup drop. I think someone posted earlier that last year's poster initially had 103 names, so here is this year's poster with 103 names:
In this light, the lineup appears more robust. I actually recognize a name on almost every line!

But Dua Lipa came back in a bigger role is that really not enough for you guys??

Yes. Seeing cafe acts listed row 8-19 on the initial drop has possibly thrown me off a bit.
Jungle vs Bon Iver (vs What So Not, to some extent) would factor into my decision to not attend. That's rough. But that's kinda my thing with this lineup. There's very little margin for error, conflict-wise.

Bon Iver vs. the Anderson .Paak superjam would be a pretty killer conflict too

And it's all probably pretty close to what it'll be. I have a feeling that like a third of the good shit is going to be late night sets conflicting with each other.

I wonder if one of the Bon Iver sets could be a show with the Nashville Symphony or something like that. Just spitballing here. And don't sleep on Low Cut Connie on that last line. The lead singer played piano in the artist area for a few years. I'm glad to see him make it on to the actual lineup.

That could be worth the trip to Roo in itself, if you're a Bon Iver fan at least. The stream of his orchestra set at Coachella last year was absolutely majestic.
