Doesn't Metallica's tour make this seem possible/likely literally every year? I feel like every year I've gone their tours lined up well to play
Eh, a bit, but not really. 2012-2014 they just played small month long tours, 2015 they played some big festival dates (Lolla, Reading/Leeds I think) but were never really in the Coachella rumors, 2016 was GnR reunion so they weren't going to book Metallica too. 2017 was when rumors were strongest after there was the "Are you guys playing Coachella next year?" "No comment" Kirk video, Lars said playing Coachella is the one thing they still want to accomplish in their careers, and the Beyonce drop - it just didn't happen. 2018 they were out early pretty clearly given Euro dates but people perpetuated the rumor because the dates were free.
So I'd say 2017 was the only "RED HOT" year, and other years have just been "this is gonna happen eventually, let's just do this thing" type speculation.
They also headlined the Big Four Festival at the polo fields in 2011 so they already have a working relationship with Goldenvoice. It's just a matter of when it lines up.
Holy shit I got a final confirmation for a house in Palm Springs. It's actually happening. Every other request I tried was denied or the owners were responding back with insane prices. Could not be more pumped.
That being said, can we please get back to a couple rock acts in the top 6? Some combo of Metallica, Tool, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, or The National in the top 6 would be fantastic.
Nice! Congrats! Booking the house is half the battle lol.
You probably had a nice selection that early, we've booked ~9-11 months out the last couple years and still have really good options.
If you have questions on location, etc. let me know - I go to Palm Springs a couple times a year and have stayed in various hotels/houses around the area for Coachella.
Yeah we wanted a house for sure. We figure if we're gonna make the trek from Chicago, might as well do it big. Very reasonable price too- sleeps 8 and it's 2100 all in with fees and everything for the 4 nights. We're all gonna have miles built up to cover the flights so that won't be an out of pocket expense, it'll just be the ticket, rentacar, and expenses we have once we get down there. The place was def the biggest obstacle. We're going weekend 2.

Every house I tried for that was closer to Indio (Palm Desert, La Quinta, etc) was wayyy more expensive or they just flat out weren't taking reservations for Coachella weekends. Most places that slept 6 or more were asking $550 a night or more, not counting the fees which were also bumped up higher because of that weekend.

Did you use Air BnB, VRBO?
VRBO. We only had to put $700 down and it's free cancellation before February '19 too. AirBnB I believe you have to pay in full upfront.
I need to do something similar next year. A house with a group in indio sounds super convenient/fun.
I took the lead two years ago in spearheading the booking for our house (looking for locations, payment, etc.). I absolutely love staying in a house and last year was so much fun, but I may have to pass off the duties to someone else next year lol.
This time of year gets super frustrating. Last year we booked a 16 people house and sometime in mid-March when I was almost losing sleep over it because i had a big non-refundable deposit down and only like 6-7 people committed, we went from 7 people committed, to full, to like 25 people wanting in almost overnight. Pretty much nobody decides what to do til late if they have options and no "skin in the game." Same with this year - we've got 11 of 16 booked now and I'm worried about filling it - we'll probably be fine but just a hassle I'm shouldering because I'm the person willing to do it. You try to make people pay early and nobody wants to commit and you just have deposit money hanging out until you get flush with cash in late March.
It would be a lot easier if I was flying in with a committed group of 8 or so, but people just decide last minute when they are only coming from LA. Anyway, I'm sure it'll work out but I stressed so much over the house last year, and stressing again this year, so may try a hotel again next year lol

this is my issue for 2019 planning. I went in a group of 3 people in 2017 haven't stopped talking about wanting to go back with a bigger group since, but my friends are dog shit at planning anything more than 2 weeks in advance. I think a house would be fun as shit, getting people to commit this far in advance gives me headaches as the guy who makes plans.
I'm always the planning guy and ya it sucks. But with my shithead friends, if I don't do it, it won't get done. There's a select group of our friends we'll invite to come with us for something like this, only reliable people who have done fests before and have come through with no issues in the past. That's why we're shooting for somewhere between 6-8 ideally.

Feel you all on being the designated planning guy, but then again it's pretty satisfying when everything pays off. I don't know if we'd ever book a house, but the hotel route worked fine last year and will hopefully work out fine this year.

is this for 2019? what dates did you book? are you just guessing at this point?

The dates are very similar to ths year's W2 dates so just guessing at this point. Could always cancel if I had to.

Be careful about the house canceling or changing the price on you when dates are announced.
This was my initial worry with VRBO but the fact that I've communicated back and forth with the property owner multiple times before we locked it in today makes me feel better. There was other "Instabook" options where they made it sounds like all you had to do was submit your request for the amount listed and that was it, it was yours. But all of those would be denied or replied back to with the higher Coachella pricing. This guy def knows it's for Coachella so I'm thinking we're in the clear.
It's an interesting case because if you were super into them in like 2011-2012, you've probably aged out of that genre now, so they almost have to go for kids that listen to them today, which is harder to do.
If they get booked I wouldn't be shocked, but with the big phase out of big room EDM this year (only two second liners would be "EDM" - Kygo and ODESZA, and third lines have definitely shifted to soundclound rap) I'm not sure Coachella will even care about writing the huge check for them. They'd certainly be in for Ultra, and I bet instead of going the LCD/Outkast all fests route, they just do the traveling carnival tour thing again that they did for their retirement.

I think you're fine. I booked our house this year before dates were released in like May 2017 and I got it clear, explicitly in writing that the cost and booking was for "Coachella Weekend One" and we would move the booking at no additional cost should the dates be any different. It wasn't a problem.
Damn, tix to see Arctic Monkeys at Hollywood Forever sold out instantaneously and a lot of twitter shitstorm happening about people who didn't get tix.
I think they've played the album waiting game marvelously and think they're in solid positioning to headline next year, especially if they don't play another SoCal show (which I don't imagine), there's going to be such pent-up demand for them out here.

I got lucky and scored a ticket for Hollywood Cemetery show, but I also expect to see them at FYF before Coachella.
