i was going to put the bumper sticker on last year, but im sooo glad i didn't...we saw a bunch of people getting pulled over for it...so im telling every car thats going down with us to just be smart and avoid anything that will make us stick out
There's no combination of words I could put on the back of a postcard. No song that I could sing. But I can try for your heart Our dreams, and they are made out of real things Like a, shoebox of photographs With sepiatone loving Love is the answer
A little feeling in my gut that I get of late when I think about these cats running the world with hate

yeah, I wanted to write bonnaro bound and stuff all over the car, but my boyfriend said that would make us stand out super bad, which is true. Incognito is the best route, until you're arrived at roo!
This will be our 3rd year going to Roo from Omaha. We follow the Mapquest route, don't pain our car, leave all the stickers off, wear normal clothes, and try not to look like "hippies" before we get there. We drive the speed limit and leave the refreshments for when we get there.

This will be my first year at Bonnaroo and I was wondering what places to be the most cautious in? I'm coming from Omaha and will take I-24 til Nashville, but than I am considering jumping on I-65 for a period and then taking one of the highways to Manchester...
Any advice you can offer a newbie is greatly appreciated!
Be careful in Murfreesboro, TN. There are tons of cops here.
We were driving through Pulaski, Tn on Thursday afternoon a little around 12 and got pulled over in a speed trap. It was pretty messed up, because the speed limit had dropped, and we totally did not see the sudden drop in change of the speed limit.
i hate that place. we have to drive thru to get to my grandparent's house and driving it is just icky. it drops really fast.
and as far as murfreesboro cops- be extra careful if you're doing any partying on wed. nite! I've yet to *knock on wood* have an issue with them, but I know last summer they were putting up roadblocks all over town, so have a dd!
::there's a cow and an ostrich just waiting for you! a glass of apple cider just waiting for you! the smell of 1952 just waiting for you! and all I'm doing here is just waiting for you...:: -jens lekman-
I'm coming from I-65 South, and in 2006 I was pulled over about 25 miles north of Nashville as were two other cars in our caravan. (we had 6 cars traveling together!) As we came up this big hill our radar detector started going crazy, and we started seeing cops everywhere, either with a car already pulled over or waiting to pull someone over. Every car pulled over was obviously going into Bonnaroo. The cop told me I was following the car in front of me too closely (not true) and that I did not merge into the other lane when passing hazard lights (cop lights), which I could not do because there was a another cop car flying past me in that lane. He then quickly exposed why he really pulled us over. He said if we had drugs in the car we could give them to him now, and we would get a ticket and be on our way. Or, we could lie to him, he would have the drug dogs come and they would find our drugs, even if they were buried in the car top carrier, and we would become a resident of his county. I said there are no drugs in the car, and he said he would be right back. 20 minutes later, he came back to the car, told me the dogs were busy up the highway so we were getting off easy, and he would only write me a ticket, for $160! Getting off easy by getting a ticket for not breaking any laws. Welcome to Tennessee! Oink Oink PIGS! Last year we went through the same wall of cops, but managed to pass through without being pulled over. (we decided to go sans bonnaroo signs on the car this time) As everyone else has stated, just don't start partying until you get into the festival. My heart will still always start pounding passing that spot on I-64!

Murfreesboro cops are easy on drunks, but hard on drunk drivers. Always have a dd here.

I remember Troopers driving up and down I-24 last year, atleast 10 of them in the same stretch right before and after the line to the festival grounds. So as you near Manchester just slow down!!!

once you are into tennessee, look out. i hate to say it but it's well known that the state troopers heavily profile bonnaroo goers. if you have a shit ton of stickers on your car, it's not a good idea. if you have people crammed into your car, it's not a good idea. if you have writing on your car such as "BONNAROO OR BUST YEAHHHHHHH" it is not a good idea. however, it's your prerogative. once you get into coffee county, there will most likely be state troopers either in the middle grassy knoll between the interstates or on the sides. they also like to hide. they do it in groups too, so don't think you are safe if the idiot in front of you is going 80 but you are only doing 75. they can and will get you both.
LEARN YOUR RIGHTS and under no circumstances should you consent to a search that is unwarranted. also, if you are a fan of the corn, i know it's hard but try to refrain the last hour or so before you get to manchester. it's a little hard to cover up that smell on quick notice, and that's definitely a reason to search.

this year we're being EXTRA careful.. and we're not going to bring any of our corn or others in the vehicle, just for the exra assurance.
Once you get to roo, there will be plenty of people willing to share with you!!!
We got pulled on I-40 westbound around Knoxville. Definitely speeding, but at a place where there was a downhill grade and a bend in the road (so you couldn't see the waiting cops). We were most assuredly pulled due to the layer of dust on our car. We noticed plenty pulled later up the interstate. Same very obvious dust layer.
I'm an attorney, so while I know my rights, I also know how much longer a traffic stop becomes when you press for them. Cops also have a tendancy to turn not so friendly, when you insist on your rights being respected. Is that the way it ought to be? No. But I didn't want an 8-hour trip turned into a 10-hour one, when I knew there was nothing in my car to find, unless someone put it there, unbenownst to me.
Things they did with my consent, which I really didn't have to allow: Search my car. Allow the dog to do the sniff test.
Asked me not only about my arrest record, but of the law-abiding citizens in my car. Not convictions, mind you; arrests. When I said I had no arrests, the officer actually got a bit belligerent, telling me that if I was lying he'd know when he ran my license. Well, why ask, if that's the case?
Asking about the arrest record of a mere passenger, in my car, really annoyed me. How do I know? I don't exactly ask every friend of mine if they've ever been arrested. Not to mention, they really had no legal basis to ask that at all. I merely said no arrests for my passenger, either.
The good part is that I think they were looking for bigger game. I look a lot younger than I am. I'm over 40. Had a VIP Bonnaroo sticker on the front of my car. Was extremely polite and deferential. Answered all their questions. Let the dog sniff, to no avail. I think they realized I just didn't fit the profile. They let me go with a speeding warning.
So the question you have to ask yourself is whether it's worth it to you to insist on your rights, knowing you could end up waiting around on the side of the road for ages. If you know there is nothing in the car, and are polite and helpful, you will be on your way faster and possibly with only a warning.
I really wonder if that NJ decision would stand up in federal court. I have my suspicions that it wouldn't. Guess everyone had better be really nice as auto passengers in NJ, for the time being. Wow. That's just amazing.

I honestly think the best thing to do with any cop is to just be sincerely nice and respectful. Not fake nice, but genuine. That's gotten me out of countless tickets. I'm pretty sure the last time i counted, I was up to 18 different times of getting pulled over, and only 2 resulted in speeding tickets [eta; out of 2 years driving with a license]. [Cleavage seems to help, also ]
But hell, no way am i prolonging getting to Bonnaroo any more than I have to, no speeding for me.
Will a big cooler on the roof rack of a mazda 626 with 4 nineteen year old white guys send up a signal flare? I plan on NOT bringing any herbs or herbal paraphenalia. I do however plan on wrapping 4 differnt large bottles of booze in 4 seperate sleeping bags. I'm putting those in the back of the trunk. I'm going to clean the car up nicey nice too. My plan if I get pulled over is to NOT CONSENT TO SEARCH. Can drug dogs smell booze? Should I take my radar detector out? Will my NJ PBA card work? I also plan on saying we're going camping, not going to the 'Roo.
Haha wow thats alot of run on questions. I'd love some answers though.

Absolutely.

A debatable tactic, especially if no one is holding. On principle, I commend you. However, if expediency is the order of the day, I'd suggest consenting.
Can dogs smell booze?
I don't believe they're trained to sniff it out. As long as you don't have an open container in the cabin, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
Should I take my radar detector out?
In Virginia, Washington, D.C., possibly even Ohio, yes. All other states have no laws against non-commercial vehicles using radar detectors.
Depends on the state Will my NJ PBA card work?
Probably not. It's debatable whether it'll even buy you anything in NJ, IMHO.
I also plan on saying we're going camping, not going to the 'Roo.
Irrelevant. He's going to do what he's going to do regardless of his original intent in pulling you over. Remember, he's not pulling you over because you're a bunch of hippie kids going to a druq-infested rock n' roll festival.... that'd be profiling (a big no-no in court). Rather, he's pulling you over because a) reckless driving, b) speeding, c) littering (you threw something out the window), d) busted tail light, e) improperly secured payload, f) all of the above.

Okay. So if instead of a cooler, should I put sleeping bags secured in a roof bag int he rack? and even though we're all under 21 we can't get bagged for the alcohol in the trunk?
Post by inertiaticc on Feb 26, 2008 15:19:38 GMT -5
i'm pretty sure that in most states, if you're over 18 you can have unopened containers in the car/trunk. i dont know if specific states have other laws though. any one else know better info?

Sorry... missed that about the ages. Yeah, if the cop's in a bad mood, you'll probably get hit up with a ticket for "minor in possession" (state laws may vary, however). Most likely, the cops'll be looking for bigger game, so you might just skate. Don't count on it, tho'.
IIRC, there's at least 1 ex-cop on the boards here who might be able to give a more definitive answer.

Hm.
I just found this:
"Minor Possessing Alcoholic Beverage 25662. (a) Any person under the age of 21 years who has any alcoholic beverage in his or her possession on any street or highway or in any public place or in any place open to the public is guilty of a misdemeanor. This section does not apply to possession by a person under the age of 21 years making a delivery of an alcoholic beverage in pursuance of the order of his or her parent, responsible adult relative, or any other adult designated by the parent or legal guardian, or in pursuance of his or her employment. That person shall have a complete defense if he or she was following, in a timely manner, the reasonable instructions of his or her parent, legal guardian, responsible adult relative, or adult designee relating to disposition of the alcoholic beverage."
In the United States, a minor in possession, or an MIP, (also referred to as a PAULA, Possession of Alcohol Under the Legal Age) is a misdemeanor. Anyone who is under the age of 21 and drinks alcohol in America, with the exception of special circumstances, is violating the law of the state. If sufficient evidence is shown to a police officer that the minor has been drinking alcohol or is in possession of alcohol, an MIP may be issued to the minor.
Punishments
Punishments for MIP's vary greatly from state-to-state. Since alcohol enforcement (and the establishment of drinking ages) are the responsibility of the individual states, only local and state agencies can legally write an MIP citation. As such, each state levies its own fines and punishments for a MIP.
In some states, a simple first-time MIP without any other circumstances (such as driving or public intoxication) may only involve a fine of $100-500. Often fines are reduced or eliminated provided the person convicted completes a program such as alcohol education, probation, or community service. In some states, a fine is eliminated, supplemented or accompanied with a loss of the accused driver's license for a period of time ranging from 30 days to 12 months. For example, violation of California's Business & Professions Code Section 25662, regarding minors in possession of alcohol, carries a punishment of $250 and a mandatory revocation of driving privileges for one year in accordance with Vehicle Code Section 13202.5.
Subsequent offenses or a person with a preexisting criminal record may frequently receive a full fine, or in some extreme cases, several days in jail. In many cases a third MIP may result in a loss of the accused driver's license until the age of 21.

Drive dry... buy it in Manchester.
I seriously doubt anyone's going to question 4 guys with 2-3 cases trying to get in the gates at 'Roo. Anything more than that may result in some of it being confiscated. Tell your sob story to your campin' neighbors, and I'm sure they'll share in kind .
