Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
The Headliner Thread is uniquely equipped to deal with tangents because it is the only thread to annually spawn a recap thread. (And Vieux is already excited to run it for 2019 every year going forward.)
If ranking things is so important and the Random Thoughts thread is not the answer, why can’t there just be a thread for it? It just sometimes feels like it’s meant to be more annoying than playful banter. Not to mention it can painfully take up a large portion of that thread’s read.

Do you want the festival threads to remain having moronic and confusing titles and be littered with trolling? Do you really want that status quo?
My position is that whatever is decided is absolutely fine with me as long as everybody is held to the same thing; and we aren't picking and choosing when to enforce rules or change rules based on who is involved.

Ok, so besides emoney who is himself a troll, no one disagrees. So why do you keep complaining?
I'll go along with whatever but honestly part of the charm of the Headliner threads have always been that they were kind of a wild west style free-for-all where actual scoops exist side by side with rankings of burger toppings and gifs of dumpsters on fire.
I get that it's not the most efficient exchange of ideas but there's something almost artistic in the free-flowing stream of consciousness that exists in there. Even if there is occasionally a gif of a masturbating rat...

Then what if we leave that to just the Bonnaroo headliner thread, as a nod to tradition, and keep it out of the other Festival threads?

I don't think the headliner thread should be 100% on topic all the time without exception. As jones said, it needs to be looked at as the balance between playful banter vs. annoying and also as a percentage of posts. It's one thing if it's 50:50 off/on topic. It's another if it's 80:20 off/on.
FWIW, I pretty much only go on this website for mafia and the festival threads.
The headliner thread has been such a shitshow for the past multiple years that I never read it. It’s complete garbage and useless. And as a result, I end up almost never reading meaningful discussion about the Roo lineup.

I agree that 50/50 should be the goal. The problem is that it tends to produce a certain volume regardless of what's going on. When we have no scoops or new ideas, then the lists appear. It does eventually get back on topic and focused, though.

Well the first post, run by the responsible and attentive thread runner, can be kept updated with the current and pertinent information. Gives you one place to look, and avoid the mess.
I think you should just whore out inforoo with pertinent music/festival related advertisements and use the proceeds to pay meatball sub to be a moderator.

We thought about it. But then we would be no better than Live Nation or AEG.
We have higher aspirations. To continue to toil for nothing but the love and admiration of our fellow music lovers.
So one set of rules for the Bonnaroo headliner thread and a another set for the other festival threads?
-disclaimer, I hate rankings.
I just think it’s important to be mindful of other annoying posting habits while in this process. A person should not have to suffer through ten pages of The Wire rankings to speculate about Bonnaroo unless they want to.
Overall it devalues the quality of that thread (which is often the centerpiece of this forum). If we are looking to seriously improve this board then those kinds of things should go in their own designated areas.

Ranking posts are the easiest to ignore. It's literally a list.
Personally, I have almost no interest in other people's mocks. I understand that they have value and are entirely appropriate for the thread but dear god do I not care what Username McUsernameface thinks the festival poster will look like in nine months. And I care even less that someone else thinks that Generic EDM Artist A would never be listed fifth because they are clearly a top four booking.
List posts are almost impossible to ignore when they consume multiple pages. The sole purpose of this thread is to solve those annoyances. Mock lineups make sense since this is a music festival forum and those often drive conversation when things are slow. I get nothing out of reading someones Disney movie rankings (with random numbers intermittently sprinkled in) just for the sake of filling more pages.

We all have annoyances in life to endure.
I'm with you. Ban lineup discussion from the lineup discussion thread!

I know you are probably talking about meaningful pre-lineup drop discussion, but the 2018 Lineup Discussion Thread actually has some pretty good lineup/Bonnaroo 2018 discussion going on. It's mostly "hey check out this artist" and "daily lineups coming up" type of stuff, helpful and on-topic type posts.

As much as I love the free-wheeling-anything-goes nature of the headliner thread, I understand it results in a lot of lame/boring posts. And the push to generate more pages is not a worthwhile endeavor. But occasionally the stars align and a pretty good joke develops that everyone picks up on. But I'll also admit these jokes get driven into the ground. Years back there was a time when scrolling and suddenly seeing what was clearly a ranking of the seasons of The Wire was quite funny. Not as funny these days.
I still think as a nod to tradition the headliner thread should allow some off topic discussion, even if everyone doesn't like it. If this is the path we take, the OP should include, in addition to helpful information on current rumors, etc., perhaps a brief history of the headliner thread that indicates it is traditionally a place of off topic silliness in addition to Bonnaroo headliner discussion.
Other festival threads should try to remain on topic. Mocks should certainly be allowed in all festival threads as they constitute meaningful discussion (not that cdevaney was suggesting we ban mocks, he was merely using them as an example of the types of posts he doesn't like but has to endure, as we all have types of posts we don't like but have to endure).
Having said that, if the people want the headliner thread to be more strictly on topic, I'm OK with that too. Plenty of off topic silliness to be had in Random Thoughts.
Regarding reddit/facebook, I think it's fine and funny to copypasta ridiculous posts from either site. I don't want to live in a world where I don't occasionally see the "mainly an indie guy" copypasta posted. Having said that, I think we should adjust our attitudes moving forward regarding the reddit sub. The fact is that they work very hard to provide good Bonnaroo info. Their rumored/confirmed artist sticky was thorough and exhaustive this year. They schedule meetups which are apparently pretty great, picking up the ball as the Inforoo meetups have dwindled. There are lots of people there that have attended many Bonnaroos and are happy to share their experience. While we cherry pick ridiculous posts, for the most part the stuff that gets upvoted is sane and rational, and it's not all sunshine and roses and radiating positivity, there is plenty of valid Bonnaroo criticism as well.
Facebook is still awful though, I have no defense for them.

I can't dislike any site whose main (I think) meetup at Bonnaroo is where everyone brings beer and exchanges it. That's good stuff.
