Is Deftones sound completely fucked or only somewhat completely fucked?
They just sound fucked up
No. The sound was fucked the fuck up. Ruined the first 30 minutes. C3 needs to do better. They usually do, but that was a big fail for such an otherwise great set. The sound was fukcked up for CHVRCHES as well on the other side of the park. Usually you don’t have issues with sound at ACL , but there were big hiccups.
We got in in time to catch 3 Ikebe Shakedown songs. That was cool. Then we went to Wombats who I’ve missed all those years. Fun time. We stopped by to watch the first 2 Breeders songs. Sound was too low at Home Away. We went and watched SMINO. I’ve seen him before and it’s more about the band, and they sounded great. Next we went to Highly Suspect. When it was good it was real good but some of that set was tedious. Next we went and chilled for about 20 minutes of Blood Orange band set. Musically it was good, but I’m not a giant R&B fan. We posted up for Deftones on the right under the trees waiting for the sun to set. Sound was blown on that side. We decided to move to the back middle but it was no better so we just went and posted up on the left side where we usually hang. After about 5 songs they must have told the band the sound was fd up so they left the stage. The techs got it semi fixed and they came back out with Knife Party. Rest of the set and the performance was great. But the sound costs it a higher ranking. I split after the end to go see 20 minutes of CHVRCHES who were great despite the sound issues. I walked down the hill for 25 minutes of St. Vincent. I knew the festival sets on this tour get even better as they go, But Metallica was coming on. We left a few minutes before they were supposed to come on and they were already playing at 8:55. Wtf? We made our way pretty far up the front left and rocked the fuck out. A lot of Texas came to rock, and so did Metallica who was fucking great. That was my set of the weekend easily. I’d give it:
Metallica Paul McCartney David Byrne Deftones 2nd half The National Greta Van Fleet CHVRCHES St. Vincent
I’ll post more shit about the fest after I get home tomorrow. I’m going to watch the livestream after 3 or so when we get home so at least I’ll be able to still be there in spirit. Good running into Bill billion today.
Also FuzzyWarbles, I tried to reach you couple of times, but you didn’t respond so 🤷🏻♂️
That’s because he was probably fucked up. Imagine calling out the Deftones for being fd up when it was clearly a festival production issue. But I know some Fuzzy. And he would have been way more fd up if you could actually get a fucking drink at the fest. I mean I know I come from somewhere that doesn’t recognize alcohol laws. But come on Texas. Let me get a drink if I want one. Damn. I got popped Thursday trying to get a measly six pack at 12:50 am. They don’t have overnight church. Let me, the consumer, be free to buy and consume what I want to.
Metallica was so fucking awesome despite the safe setlist. The poster was sick, so i had to cop. They were the only show i saw after my shift but i heard Deftones, Highly Suspect, and The Wombats from a distance. The sound issues definitely plagues Deftones, but the second half of their set sounded like a classic Deftones concert. I wonder what songs got cut out of the set. The Wombats rocked. They were another show i wish i could've seen from the crowd. Wasn't feeling Highly Suspect very much though.

Metallica played Battery to start the encore, with the S&M intro. Idk if they usually do that but I'll be damned if I didn't think they were reading this board at the time.
What a great fucking show. One of my favorites I've ever seen, up there with Radiohead in 2016 and Yeezus tour.

I thought Saturday was even better than Friday. Started off with the Wombats, who were just a great time all-around. These guys were funny and sounded very good, and the crowd was into them. Went to Japanese Breakfast, who also sounded good, though wasn't really grabbing me all the way. Then I went to Brandi Carlile. I only knew two of her songs (and she played both), but holy hell, she was excellent! I really enjoyed her personal stories and her variety of song styles. Saw a but of Sharon Van Etten while eating. She was solid but I couldn't watch enough to give a fair rating before heading to Deftones.
The Deftones set was certainly interesting. Obviously sound issues plagued the first half of the set. However, other than the 5-10 minutes of microphone static that happened right before they got off stage, they sounded how they normally sound. I think Deftones has a ton of great songs, but they are one of the most disappointing live bands around. I've seen an 7 or 8 times and they've only sounded good 2-3. With that said though, when they came back, they sounded the best I've heard in years! So they must have a bad sound guy every time.
I attempted to go to Nelly after, but it was so packed i used the chance to camp for Metallica. The guys were phenomenal as always. Great energy, great songs, and there's nothing like jumping into a most pit at a fest like this. I was a bit disappointed with the fact that they didn't play right up until 10 (I know they started early but their shows are normally 2 hours and 15 min). I was also really hoping they would be playing Spit Out the Bone instead of Battery since they're playing it almost every other night on their tour. But for the weekend so far I'd rank it like this:
Poppin’ in super late to say that finally seeing Paul changed my life. Whole Friday might have been the best fest day ever, though Paul being probably my favorite show ever might have accomplished that on its own. Couldn’t have asked for a better start to the day with Topaz Jones > Natalie Prass > Cuco > Gang of Youths. Topaz (he deserves a lot more attention than he’s getting) & Cuco (such an awesome, weird show) especially stuck out. Then we hit up AmEx for the rest of the day. Beating a dead horse at this point, but that run of Bryne, the Ntnl, & Paul was incredible. Started chilling probably halfway between the sound booth and the front for David then eventually ended up right up front for the Legend. So many emotions. The tributes during Here Today & Something hit me especially hard. Live & Let Die melted my face off. Encore was incredible. Yeah, what everyone else has said.
I was honestly exhausted after all of that, but yesterday was fantastic too. Listened to Durand Jones while watching the end of TX/OU. Mon Laferte at Honda was my second favorite of the day, only behind St. Vincent - weekend 2 folks, I recommend checking her out. Smino, Brandi Carlile, Blood Orange, CHVRCHES were all great. Then, as mentioned, St Vincent stole the day - incredible all-around performer, and she shreds. Saw like 20 mins of Justice, which was fun, then Metallica was awesome even from a distance.
Honestly not sure where my days gonna take me today aside from Parquet Courts & Janelle Monae. But I’ve already got well beyond my money’s worth.

Back at the crib watching Red Bull. So far I caught some of Mt. Joy who I liked (think I might have seen them once?) and have Amen Dunes on. I’ll wait until after the weekend for final thoughts, but this was some other shit I was thinking about driving home.
Me and the Deftones got short changed by the sound issues. I have only seen them once in a good theatre, and the sound was clean and great. I went hard for the fixed part of the set. I forgot they covered Cypress Hill’s, “Here is something You Can’t Understand.” Deftones always has that hardcore edge and are one of my favorites rock bands. I was more hyped up for that show than anything coming into the weekend.
Saw a couple of passed out people dayside getting carried off. Older people though. I didn’t nearly drink enough at the fest. I usually had a Sol in one hand and a Topo Chico in the other, and they were both usually hot. You just had to kill water if you went during the day because there are a lot of no shade areas. So while over the limit, I never really got that drunk. I hung with my middle kid’s Gf all fest and had a lot of fun with her. A couple of our local friends and a few of our LA crew were there, and I got to hang with a couple Inforoo people (Fred, JJ and billion).
The only chaos altercation I saw was leaving after Metallica and stopped to take a piss. I hear commotion outside and step out the door to see this girl clock this other chick with a straight jab but no power. She later said she had never hit anyone in her life and could not believe it came to that. As soon as I see this I stepped right into the middle and held back this big girl and talked her out of a fight. I got the whole story walking out. This one guy has to piss and goes to a green showing bathroom and opens slowly. It’s occupied so he apologizes but gets ranted and raved at and called an asshole and shit. Feeling at that point that the situation needed to be trolled, he now says, You had one job to do and goes into the next one. Chick comes out and starts attacking the portolet kicking it and trying to bust the door in to fight. Bathroom guy is telling her he’s about to have her escorted but she doesn’t give a shit. Guy comes out the bathroom and his gf had tried to explain that he apologized and don’t push him when she went after her and she threw that punch in retaliation. Tip from one of the hardest drinkers you know. If you have violent tendencies, don’t drink so much that you can’t control your violence. It’s pretty easy to do. Still, I’m glad I was able to be a peacemaker.
Sorry, I didn’t talk to anyone who saw it (there were plenty of people there). ————————— I just got to watch the first half of the CHVRCHES set that I didn’t get to see while at Deftones. Glad.
Great dedicated to Metallica (several other bands also mentioned them yesterday - Wombats, Deftones etc.) “fuck” scream of rage vs Kavanaugh confirmation and Brexit on their side. Brav-fucking-o
This McCartney set is easier on the couch. Haha. Just came up on I’ve Got a Feeling which really kicked the set into the high atmosphere for me. Reliving is easier though. That was easily the most packed I’ve ever seen an ACL set. I’m not an authority because I’ve only been to 6 days at 3 ACLs.
Fwiw the Sofi Tucker (sp?) set had the Tito’s Tent and especially around it the most packed I’ve ever seen that.
