Awesome? I have no issue with the gender side of it, it's about the talent level. She's a Deadmau5 protege' and doesn't do almost any of her own shit. She might as well just sit on a couch and troll her crowd like he does sometimes. Many of the shows are simply reruns of the same couple of Bassnectar songs and other stuff she seems to always play. The glasses are gimmicky, and they appeal to those who gimmickry appeals to. I don't have a problem with the "mystique" built around her brand, but I think not only is the talent level pretty lacking, the shows are geared toward the masses and have almost no unique qualities to them. I'm not trying to come off as a hater, but she's not really not that good beyond surface level amusement. There are literally at least 2 dozen acts behind her who are either better DJ's or accomplished musicians.
Do you have proof she doesn't produce her own songs? I think she puts on a fun show, even if it gets a bit same-y.
No. I have not been able to find proof. I have looked 2 or 3 times where super deep EDM heads I know who were highly critical to the point of saying that she was nothing more than a glorified button pusher. All I can get is stories about her meteoric rise to the top. And that sort of goes with Goldenvoice who decided after she played a mini-stage at Buku last year, that she should close the Float Den this year (not as a headliner, but it was a giant leap/step for her and her career). I have read a few people (dubious personal accounts on Reddit and other boards) who said they have seen her play the same show multiple times. I've only seen a few minutes here and there, and sure, people were having a lot of fun. I'm not a giant Deadmau5 fan, but he does write and produce a lot of what he plays. I haven't really found that in the few minutes I've spent with Rezz personally on or on livestream. It was just sort of generic.
But like I said, I'm not trying to come off as a hater. She has a lot of post-millennial fans, and she gives younger kids (and particularly younger girls) something to look up to. That and people having a good time at her sets is the good part. Being that high on the Hulaween lineup is the bad part. I know talent can get buried on lineups, but to put her on that 3rd row ahead of seriously more accomplished producers and musicians seems kind of shitty. Maybe the draw of the Space Mom is bigger than I realize?
Rezz seemed pretty fun at Day4Night but I really know nothing about her and it does seems surprising that she is that high. Let's be happy it isn't Mashmello though. <3

Her shows are more like Flume-esque shows where the same set is played for a while. She also tours frequently, and isn’t a DJ, so her show being same-y is fine with me as long as she doesn’t keep it completely stale going forward.
I'm very strongly considering this one, though I'm not familiar with SCI. I played them on Apple Music and I got a bluegrass cover of "Walk This Way". Everything seemed very bluegrassy. But looking at video from last year makes it seem like they're more jammy, Grateful-Deadish live. Would those more familiar agree? Idk Phish that well but had a ton of fun when I saw them live, is SCI similar?

SCI started as a bluegrass band and came part of late second wave of jam bands (with Phish and widespread panic). Lots of their music is rooted in the bluegrass but they incorporate a lot of other elements, particularly sorta trancy electronic elements and lots of improvisation.

I think SCI is a lot of fun and if you like Phish you’ll like them. I wouldn’t listen to any older shows If you want to get an idea of what they sound like now though.

Skim through videos of some of their other Hula shows, E Forest and 14 Wakarusa. Cheese rules like a mf live.
Also I think they usually do announce an incident with another act at Hula, right?

At least one special night set. Incident at Flagstaff 2012 is on Apple Music and is a great show
Never seen SCI but hear them on JamOn a bunch and I feel they're the most evolved contemporarily of some of then OG jam bands. A lot of electronic influence anfor production.
Will be seeing them though at Waterloo Fest In Austin

Contemporarily evolved is a good way of putting it. I think they are an easier entry into jam than a lot of the others, but that's not to say they are simplistic. If you don't like what you're hearing at any moment, there's a good chance you'll really dig what comes next. They play so much at Hula you consider skipping a lot, but every time you tell yourself you'll just do a song or two, you can't leave.

Almost every year I went, I come in mostly hyped to see some undercard acts or subheadliners, but then leave with the best memories of String Cheese Incident, and they're the best show of the weekend almost every single time.
Awesome lineup this year in my opinion. Seems way better (for my taste at least) than the last two years. On par with 2015 lineup wise for me. Never been but have 10+ friends that go every year. This might be my first time out there. Absolutely loved Janelle’s set at Roo in 2014, and I’m really digger her new album. Also it occurred to me that with Jamiroquai playing and it being Halloween, I foresee many people dressed up as Napoleon Dynamite doing the dance to Canned Heat. Or at least a lot of Vote For Pedro shirts.
I didnt think a facebook page could be worse than the Inforoo page, but the Hula group is trying very hard to keep up. Man the Janelle arguments about her not deserving to be a headliner or how she doesnt fit the vibez are embarrassing.

The people outraged over no Bassnectar drove me to leave that group, especially since I wasn't planning to go this year.
I just happened to win a pair of VIP tickets over the weekend, so I guess I'm going to make a return to Hulaween for the first time since 2015. Hopefully the FB group has settled some in the time since the lineup dropped. I've submitted a request to rejoin. lol

Have any of you been to this before? How many people are usually there? I'm thinking of going for just Saturday to see Jamiroquai, and I'm just curious what kind of crowds I would have to fight to do that.

Haven’t been able to make the trip down yet but I’ve heard nothing but fantastic things about Hula, they cap attendance at 20,000 so I imagine crowds won’t be bad. From what I’ve heard you’d probably want to go the whole weekend if you can.

20,000?! That's perfect. Thanks!
I would love to go the whole time, but I've got 3 kids, ages 3 and under in the house right now, so I've got to be a little more choosy. I'm only going to bucket list type shows for bands that never really tour this year.

Honestly my favorite festival crowd as well. Can’t get much better than Hula
