What's your favorite venue in your city?
I'm interested to hear how people's experiences vary from city to city.
I love the Sinclair in Boston. While its essentially a replica of Bowery Ballroom, its intimate, the sound is great, there's not a bad spot in the house, drinks are relatively cheap, people tend to be pretty respectful, and you can roll in pretty much whenever you want and still get a decent spot. Plus they get a great variety of artists, from up and comers to random high profile shit that's sometimes afiliated with Harvard. Moderately priced tickets too.
My favorite venue to go and see concerts is probably in the Botanique Rotonde in Brussels. The venue is round shaped and has a really cozy atmosphere (also when you look up, there's a discoball hanging, which is also cool). It's kinda small, max 300 people I think so it's for the more smaller and intimate shows you go there. Seen a few good shows there like EDEN, Angelo De Augustine or Hundred Waters there so yeah. The Botanique, as a whole, is also kind the venue where they program rather unknown, cutting edge and rising stars. Most of the time I end up listening to someone during the year, googling them and see that they already played Botanique a few weeks/months ago and that I missed them haha (honestly happend a few times and it's kind of frustrating sometimes)
My favorite bigger venue is probably the most famous one in Belgium and is known in whole Europe I think. It's the Ancienne Belgique, the venue I probably visit the most through out the year and it's just always nice coming back to it. It's about 2k capacity and the prices go from 20€ to 30€ and occasionally when they got someone bigger the prices are obviously a bit higher, so it's fairly good normally. They program a big load of different kind of artists there, bands for little children, Dutch bands to really exclusive bands from time to time. They also got a little Club venue and a café where upcoming artists come and present their music. Their agenda is always filled with awesome names so yeah haha. Seen ODESZA, Above & Beyond, Run The Jewels etc there

Love the Sinclair, though Royale was always my favorite Boston venue.
Haven't lived in DC for too long, but 9:30 Club is thus far my favorite music joint in town. Great acoustics and a good view from anywhere (the design of the two balconies couldn't have been more perfect), a rewards system featuring points for attendees, early entry through an attached downstairs bar for the first 30 people who show up an hour before doors, and a terrific selection of artists (including stuff that you'd otherwise have to see elsewhere in bigger, crappy places, such as the House of Blues in Boston).

Don't really love any venues in Tampa, but Crowbar is neat I guess. Orlando's got a House of Blues that does the job well.
Overall favorite venues: Output, Trade, smartbar, Spybar. All clubs...I just realized I don't really have a proper venue I really love. I know people rave about Metro in Chicago, but I thought the sound was shitty both times I've been.

Troy Savings Bank Music Hall
It is one of those old acoustically perfect theaters. If you listen to WTF with Marc Maron, you probably heard him rave about it. The seats are super uncomfortable and your beverages are served in sippy cups so you don't spill and ruin the woodwork. Very small capacity.
The Palace Theatre
It's big and beautiful. Lots of creepy cherubs everywhere.
Brewery Ommegang
Bring chairs and not get treated like a criminal! You can drink in the parking lot, they won't arrest you! Beer is $6 and it's all Ommegang. Knowing this, you should probably buy a camping pass because you're pretty far from civilization. I would recommend the camping. The only downside is how far it is but it's completely worth it. We go to as many of the summer concerts as possible. It's our favorite.
It was the Shim Sham pre-K(atrina). It is one of my favorite. New Orleans has some beautiful (and great) venues but this one in the heart of the Quarter wins my heart.

I forgot my two favorite club venues are gone forever. Saratoga Winners was burned to the ground in an insurance fraud attempt and Valentine’s was sold to the hospital next door to be knocked down and turned into some bullshit.
Now we really only have Upstate Concert Hall for a moderate sized club show or The Hollow, which might actually be smaller than Valentine’s was.
When my internet decides to turn back on, I’ll dig up some pictures. Especially of Winners. Holy shit I can’t believe my mom was cool with just dropping me off there.
It was minimally insulated. The floor collapsed at least 4 different times during sold out shows. It was just exactly what you see. My parents went here when they were dating... over 30 years ago. Looking harder at the picture, I think this might be a friend's band. I'm gonna fall down a rabbit hole.
This is what Saratoga Winners kinda looks like now:
It's much more overgrown, the only thing left standing is the bathrooms. If I was much more flush with cash, I would totally buy the property and rebuild it.
Valentine's had a downstairs and upstairs venue. Both were very tiny. Maybe 200 capacity upstairs. Downstairs was 21+, but much more of a bar than club. They had shows downstairs but the acts were typically local and very small. It was really the only place for punks. Always an interesting crowd.
Upstairs:
There's no good pictures of the upstairs venue. It was tiny. Sometimes there was a bar, but usually not because that was really the only place to put the merch tables. They packed that place tighter than a can of sardines. The sound guy was a bit of an asshole, though. There were a handful of shows that he just turned the sound off and didn't let bands finish their sets. Like he'd just end the show for petty bullshit reasons.

Pre-K, The State Place was my all time favorite venue, besides (Shim Sham) One Eyed Jacks. Shim Sham didn't book the same way as One Eyed Jack does, we get better touring music there now. I saw so many shows at The State Place in my teens and early twenties. esteban teased me with some news of them trying to restore it, but it doesn't look legit. We didn't have a whole bunch of venues back then that didn't cater to tourist and local music, so I think that and nostalgia play big parts of me missing that the palace so much.
I just read that part. My mom used to let me go to this rundown bookstore call the Abstract that had heavy metal/punk rock bands from Houston-New Orleans that would play there. There was no alcohol on property (the bar was a block down and they didn't card) and she knew the Judge, who owned it. Parents in the 80s and 90s were dumb. My kid has freedom but nothing like what we had. Crazy.

My grandmother had two rules. 1) do well in school. 2) don't come home in a police cruiser.
I had four uncles. I was the first one to follow those two rules through high school.
I graduated and I never came home in a police cruiser, but I have been arrested 3 times in my life. Also, we did stupid shit due to our freedom. Like jumping off of barges into bayou canals (I stopped when we saw the gator watching and waiting). We were 14-17 and running around New Orleans like nothing. My older brothers were bad and I was scary, as per my mom.

No love for Jannus?
I’ve actually never been! I’ll be there for the first time on Saturday to see Broken Social Scene.

The Jefferson Theater in Charlottesville is a neat space. Close friend of mine went to UVA and lived right across from it for awhile. Good times.
As far as Asheville goes, they have all pros and cons. Salvage Station is one of the newer venues around, a lot of factors going it it's favor. Outdoor and indoor stages, plenty of parking, and it was voted best wings in Asheville a few weeks ago.
Another vote for 9:30 Club in DC. Definitely my favorite spot to see a show.
Although somewhat new, have seen a lot of good shows at Union Transfer in Philly. Also has 3 bars with a very good beer selectin, and a large lounge for if you get to the show early.

Reporting back to say Jannus was indeed awesome. Better sound and lights for BSS than at HoB in Orlando. The one drawback I could see is the heat dampening the experience once it starts to get really hot out. But, the weather cooled down Saturday night, so everything went swimmingly.

San Diego's best venue is The Casbah. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.
It's small, hot, dirty, and has amazing sound. Even the security is great, the perfect balance of friendly/kickass/non-douchey (which is apparently an impossible combination at all other venues I've been to). Despite it's small size, they book large acts here sometimes just because the venue is so well known. It's the only venue in town where you're practically on stage with performers, and can chat with them after the show with ease either out front or while milling around in the merch/second bar area on the patio.

I didn’t go to the HoB show but the show at Jannus was great, my first BSS show. Looks like we got some songs at that show they haven’t been playing at other dates too. But yeah it’s a unique venue, good cheapish beer selection and the people who throw parties on their back porches to watch the show is a nice touch... Would definitely recommended short sleeves and shorts during the summer months though

Yep, very happy they added some unique songs to the setlist.
That I've ever been to? I sure do love the Tabernacle in Atlanta. And though it's no longer open, I've had some great times at Amos Southend in Charlotte... honorable mention to The Orange Peel in Asheville, as well.
