Remember a few years ago back when the festival was still at City Hall Plaza, and you were pleading for a bigger festival with major headliners that matched what was being booked elsewhere in the country? It happened! Can't complain now that the festival is booking acts you don't like, given their need to stay afloat financially with their increased size.
Bigger acts, fine. Financially, I think Childish Gambino and Kendrick Lamar would sell just as many tickets, if not more than Scott or 21P. Plus, anyone who thinks that Tame Impala has any sort of broad appeal is nuts. You want acts, like The Killers and Eminem last year, who have a ton of casual fans who know the hits. You can't appeal only to music geeks if you want to sell tickets, you have to have some broad appeal. Regardless of their artistic merit, Tame Impala is hardly a household name, compared to any of Boston Calling's headliners of the last two years.

no the fuck i do not.
The "you," to which I refer, is the company running the festival, for whom profit is the primary concern.
If you think that Tame Impala is a bigger draw than The Killers, or that Travis Scott will sell more tickets than Eminem, you're wrong.
My point is that if you want to sell tickets, book headliners who will motivate the greatest number of ticket purchases.
i hate to break it to you whack ass autotunemcgee travis scott is moving the most tickets this year
That wouldn't surprise me, given the lack of star power all across the top line. But they could certainly have found bigger top line draws for all three days.

Not a Travis fan by any means but he totally has a larger draw than Gambino or maybe ever Kendrick. At least right now. His tour sold amazingly well and resale went for far higher prices than Gambino's were. Not to mention Travis is likely cheaper than both while drawing the same amount, if not more people. While I would have certainly wanted those two way more. I understand the financial decision to book Travis Scott.

But the "retirement tour" aspect of any Gambino dates creates a sense of urgency. See him now, or never see him (again). Sure, he can always change his mind and focus upon music again in the future, but his other gig has been going spectacularly well of late.

if its so easy to book Childish Gambino on his retirement tour why don't you do it

I'm not a concert/festival promoter. I suspect, though, that the Madison Square Garden company has the money and clout to book anyone they want, among artists open to doing festivals in a given year, and we were all pleasantly surprised at the level of acts they booked to headline in 2017 and 2018 after the move to a larger site.
