Spent the whole 2018 thread as a lurker but decided to actually participate this time, so hello to all. I've only missed 2 single days in the history of BC (Avett and Disclosure) and not planning on letting that number grow anytime soon.
As far as 2019 headliners... while it's obviously all speculation, i would think we are more likely to get Childish Gambino coming off 1 Garden show or (ideally) Kendrick coming off the TDE tour Mansfield show (which by BC2019 will be almost a year ago) than getting Drake who's doing 2 Garden shows this fall. And while I've been dying to see Bruce again, I think it's more realistic that a "legacy" rock act would be something more like RHCP. Florence would be my third pick for sure.
Also I think that both Frank Turner and Matt & Kim have really high chances of showing up. Both put out new albums this spring and are doing headline tours this year, festivals next year... both popular in the area. Seems to fit pretty well to me.
I wouldn't rule out someone like Zac Brown Band. They're only doing 2 Fenway shows this year when I'm pretty sure they've sold out 3 in the past. Would definitely get people in the door, they're supposedly great live, and they play a lot of covers/not just pure country stuff that would turn a ton of people off. Could be an interesting shift. As sort of a safety blanket you have someone like Justice close out the Blue Stage and at least partially overlap (like 2017 Sigur Ros vs Chance).

Vampire Weekend would be a good option. Seems like they will have new music and tour dates coming soon. Lord Huron would be a great fit for this festival, so I'm surprised they've never been here.
D'Angelo (BC's continued relationship with Questlove gives me some smidgen of hope this could happen eventually) Pusha T (same day as Drake, obviously) Sleep Animal Collective Lykke Li Deerhunter King Tuff Jim James Alex Cameron Ryan Adams Kelly Lee Owens Saba Kali Uchis Death Grips (for shits and giggles)
Ravyn Lenae | Kevin Devine | Margaret Glaspy | Speedy Ortiz | Shame
Open Mike Eagle | serpentwithfeet | Pile | U.S. Girls | Lady Lamb
Courtney Marie Andrews | Vintage Lee | Julie Rhodes | Animal Flag
Just considering the fact Post Malone sold out his Xfintiy Center show last week + his entire tour is practically sold out, I feel like 5 at Boston Calling is very, very low eh? Even Drake- just recently sold out his Saturday show at the garden and still have plenty of seats for the Friday night gig.
I do wonder, considering it's the 10th edition, if they are going to REALLY step up their game. Which could either be great or a terrible move.

This year seemed to be light on the "this is my first concert in 10-20 years/this is my first concert ever" crowd, which tend to be fucking horrible at shows because they don't know how to behave. Mumford brought a lot of these folks (still, I loved the Mumford performance). Hopefully they keep the lineups similar to this year to keep the number of those people down.
I could see that, I can also see the curators being really proud they got the quote unquote 'best live band ever' or whatever they call themselves nowadays (this is coming from me who likes music decently). However I think they teased a 'big live show in 2019' so they could go to the Garden, even though they didn't sell many tickets here last time.

Since Jim James is doing the solo thing this year, I'd expect My Morning Jacket to be active next year. They're overdue. (Originally, upon release of "The Waterfall," it was mentioned that they had recorded a second album's worth of material which would be released the next year...which was 2016.)

Who could fit the bill for the Em/Tool "hasn't played Boston in 'x' years" spot?
If you're talking about Boston proper, and not counting Worcester and Mansfield, System Of A Down hasn't played here in ages and hasn't played in the 'burbs in at least a decade, The Strokes haven't played in Massachusetts in 12 years, and Chris Stapleton has played the 'burbs the last three years but has never headlined in Boston (he opened for Eric Church at the Garden, right before he started blowing up).

I bet Tame Impala is there. Played in 2015 and obviously Pond just played.
Vampire Weekend makes sense on Friday. I know a lot of people that would absolutely buy a ticket just to see them (me not being one of them).
Maybe Stevie Wonder for Sunday.
I looked through the last 8 or 9 Glasto lineups and couldn't find anyone who hadn't played in Boston in a while other than completely unrealistic ones (Portishead, Rolling Stones, Coldplay)

Because many of Chris Stapleton's fans do not live in Boston. Trust me, I have seen Chris Stapleton a few times in different parts of the country.

Unless they broke up! <dodges rotten fruit>
I believe they did their annual New Year's Eve show in Denver last time and they moved their One Big Holiday event to the Caribbean (Dominican Republic?)

The same could be said about most of the country acts that play Fenway and the Garden, and they do alright, ticket sales-wise.
Stapleton's an outlier in modern country, in that he appeals to both the Nashville mainstream fans and Americana fans. Like Willie Nelson, he can travel in a few different circles and fit in a few more lineups than most country artists.

From what Jim's said in interviews, it seemed like that second album was partially scrapped, but he's also mentioned that they might release a different version of it this year along with a live album. As much as I love MMJ, I don't think BC needs to or should bring them back just yet.

My chiropractor went to high school with Kim. #SixDegreesOfWhatever

They're likely to play Boston, anyway. They've always done right by Boston, and still played here in years that they've done more remote New England shows. They haven't been here in nearly three years, but they haven't done much touring either in that time.
If it wasn't a Solid Sound year, I'd say Wilco is would be a likely second liner, but they tend to skip Boston in Solid Sound years. (Which doesn't make a whole lot of sense, since they played Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport, CT during a Solid Sound year and Bridgeport is 124 miles from N. Adams, while Boston is 130 miles from N. Adams.) It will be three years in January since Wilco last played Boston (and we haven't even gotten a Jeff Tweedy solo show or Nels Cline jazz thing in that time. John Stirratt did participate in the Hot Stove Cool Music benefit at the Paradise last year. Glenn Kotche did some sort of duo thing at Berklee a year or two ago.)

I would add Chromeo and Chvrches to the list of popular festival bands who are doing mostly headline shows this year and will likely be doing a lot more festivals next year... Especially Chvrches, whose Orpheum show in October seems probably too small for them these days, not to mention a really bad venue for them.

We get it. You want Wilco to play and you want The Smiths and Oasis to headline

Sure, I want to see Wilco at Boston Calling at some point, but it's likely to happen eventually, not because I'm hoping it will happen, but because Crash Line forged a working relationship with the band and its organization when both Wilco and all of its many offshoot acts performed at Eaux Claires last year.
I'll grant you that The Smiths probably aren't reuniting anytime soon or ever, unless everyone's in the mood for a big payday at the same time, but Oasis is more likely to happen within the next five years. As contentious as the brothers are, they still talk around the holidays, which is more than you can say about Morrissey and Marr.
I suspect that we'll see some very unexpected reunions in the next five years among now-inactive bands whose members are in the 55-65 age range. They're going to hit that point where it's now or never and if they have the slightest inclination to put the band back together for a one-off tour, they will. The money is a big part of the equation, too.
