I disagree that Trey didn’t want to be at Newport. It was his first gig after his arrest back in 2008. He had technical problems that apparently you could really hear on the TuneIn broadcast and it didn’t help. Add in the asshole lawyer ad plane who flew OVER THE STAGE during his set multiple times and the loud crew chatter backstage and it’s easy to see why he couldn’t get into a great rhythm. I felt terrible for him. Still a fun set though.

Both Tweedy and Trey were distracted by/acknowledged the plane advertisers. I assume being alone on stage, with a lot less noise all around, and seeing that at a show is something hard to miss lol.
Trey's set was great for me (played a lot of the Phish I know) but he definitely had some technical difficulties that he commented/joked/complained about a few times between some of the first few songs. But overall I enjoyed what I saw.
I liked the Trey set much more than Phil's set, too. I love that NFF took a dive into the jam world here but Phil's set was a bit of a snooze overall. Good, talented people playing great songs but just didn't have the energy of other sets of the weekend.
My first thought, after seeing the heightened security on Sunday, had also been that a threat had been made of the police had some sort of tip. I hate that this is my first thought when something like extra bag checks happen but it’s the truth. Then to learn that an attack had occurred at at a Garlic festival elsewhere was heartbreaking.
On a much lighter note: did anyone else notice a ton of dogs at the festival on Sunday? Especially on the beer pier? Some dogs were clearly service animals, but there was a ton that just seemed to be roaming around. I didn’t think they allowed emotional support animals but I’m wondering if I’m mistaken? I love dogs, so this isn’t a complaint, I’m just curious. Although the cynical part of me wondered if it was just people that had kayaked or boated over and snuck in.
I know a lot of people are going to groan about this post but, one thing that surprised me about the security line is my chair bag was never searched. Purses, backpacks, coolers were. After the numerous shootings this weekend I was thinking about this and it really bothered me. I don't want to think anyone would ever do something like this at the festival and I don't know what the solution is. Maybe no chair bags? Have chairs available to rent? It sickens me to have to contemplate such dire safety issues at a place where there is so much love and togetherness.
I saw Angie McMahon! She was chatty, self-admittedly nervous, and amazing. Her voice is super powerful live and she clearly cares deeply about the messages in her songs and speaking out about some experiences she has had. She was riding what must have been a crazy wave of debut album release day in the US and her NFF debut. She mostly took it in stride that huge conflicts meant a smaller turnout for her set. I’d definitely see her again. (Also, I already knew Madison Cunningham was amazing, but hadn’t seen her live in person yet. She totally killed it and is a genius.) I know I missed a lot that afternoon but all in all, super glad I stuck it out at the Museum stage!

Happy to hear Madison killed it, was bummed to miss her, but I was digging the Sheryl set. Planning on seeing Madison this fall in DC, new album comes out next Friday.
if there are any still on the fence about the highwomen after this one, i am not sure what to tell you.
so glad yola is on the track, her verse gives chills. the moment where all the voices join in about 2 1/2 minutes in takes me right back to the fort. i literally listened to it 4 times in row the second it was posted.
