Newport Bingo, presented by jbthepee and timbobsnow A Inforoo Newport contest
Alright, I will be so bold as to say that Timbobsnow and I will be taking over for MrPotatoTrooper this year and running Bingo. If there are any concerns message me and we can figure it out. For now I will highly borrow from MrPotatoTrooper's bingo announcement last year....
**BINGO TIME**
Time to start up the bingo fun again.
You can either submit 48 artists to me and I will make the card randomly or you can submit them in the order you want to use for your card. Once they're all in, I'll post them all on the page for everyone to see. (Messaging them to me first just helps everyone have an equal chance, so no one can get ideas from cards posted before them)
Lets go with December 15th for a deadline and we will try to have the summary out by the end of the year.
Once the lineup starts rolling out, I'll keep track of all the acts.
Winner is whoever gets a full line of 7 on the bingo card first. As for buying a drink at the fort, I think this might be harder for me than organizing the Bingo game as I usually only find a couple of 30 minute windows that I am not super excited to see an act. Happy to buy a drink at night after the shows or a coffee in the morning early in line. Also open to brainstorming a proper prize.... I think most of us do it for the bragging rights and the fun of obsessing over the lineup.
If no one gets a full line, then the winner is the person who gets the most slots filled.
Here's what the winning card looked like from last year: (from MrPotatoTrooper himself)
Unannounced guests do not count towards bingos, because we won't know until after the fest. Only acts on the website once the "and many more" are gone from each day.
For those that are confusing like mixed acts, TimBobSnow and I will be the arbiters. We'll have to figure out what criteria we will use.
Pres Hall will be the free spot unless you want to replace it with something else. Pres Hall can not be a non-free spot.
Aaaand if we get any confirmations before your cards are in, please don't add them.
IS THAT ENOUGH RULES?!
Last year was super fun! The more the merrier!
Any questions/concerns/ideas, just let me know!
LET THE BINGOING BEGIN

I think the Felice Brothers are due for a return and they'll be all good with the current lineup by next year.
I saw references to a Newport, RI Motel 6 in the 2018 thread. Out of curiosity, how much are the rooms there? And how easy is it to get to the festival grounds from there and back without a car?
I'm looking at making my out of state move in the fall of 2019, so this will likely be my last chance to ever do Newport.

Good luck finding rooms for the motel 6! I think during festival weekend it’s like $150 a night plus tax for next year. When i booked it there were only like 4 rooms left and that was last Friday.

We stayed for 5 nights for $599- The rooms are clean and nice, but the ice machine never works! The trick to get rooms and low rates -- you can book on the Motel6 site 330 days in advance, but I'm hoping corporate doesn't catch on and increase the rates. I beleive rooms are available to book now on Booking.com or Hotels.com. We also found the Travel Lodge to be quite affordable ($725 for 5 nights). It's about a 10-15 minute drive from the Fort. We used Uber once or twice.

Yikes!! That's $450 for three nights and $600 for four, which would more or less pay for tickets to see every individual act whom I'd really want to see when they play Boston. I suppose that a car gives you the flexibility to stay more cheaply elsewhere within a half-hour drive, but that it's tough to find something affordable right in Newport.

I think if you're pricing out Newport so that it's cheaper than seeing these acts coming through your area...yeah, it's never going to work.

You should seriously look into the buses that they have that go straight from Boston to the festival every day. I believe they cost like $40 and get in around 11 or noon and leave around 8 or 8:30.
Do they still do the Jim James award? I'm pretty sure its owed to Brandi Carlile this year.
Lets try hard this year to help the festival by reaching out online to performers we want to see at the fort. Can't hurt. Bees are small but in a swarm they do mighty things.
Here's my two cents for 2019 thats part prediction part wish list.
Arcade Fire. They're made for the place and Jay has gone to see them. Sooner or later.
Of Monsters ans Men. Been a while. Possibly too big these days but who knows.
Hozier. Been a while. Be great to hear some of his new music.
The Oh Hellos. Stomp Folk is the best.
Buddy Guy. How the heck did that not happen this year? Seriously? He was in the area 50 years after playing Newport. Next year is the 60th anniversary of Newport Folk and he'd make it a party.
Lumineers. Again. Been a while.
Chris stapleton. Got to be on their radar. Personally if its big money i'd say spend smaller amounts on a few legacy performers for now and catch him in a few years when he might be passed the peak.
Eddie Vedder. Jay said he has Newprt on his radar. How to turn that into something more tangible? We could help by asking him online. Reckon he'd love Newport.
Jack White or Beck. I started going to Newport after they played so missed them dammit. Hope i get to experience one of them playing there.
Phoebe Bridgers in the Quad. Yes please.
Margo Price. Every year she somehow makes the most magic moments at Newport. Why stop now?
CSNY. Haha. Look. When people fight the best way to reconcile is to find something in common they can agree on. Crosby and Nash loved Newport. Thats a good place to start Jay.
Willie Nelson. Screw it, why not host a mini FarmAid at the fort next year. His son might help talk Willie into showing next year.
Dolly Parton. She admired Margo and Brandi's set this year. Strike while the irons hot and invite her.
The Dixie Chicks. Some country performers spoke this year of how great it was to be at a place where they can speak their minds without fear of reprisal. No band suffered more for speaking truth to power. Get them to the fort.
I could go and probably will some other day. Newport used to find forgotten legends and bring them back. I hope Newport keeps doing that.

My never-gonna-happen idea: 2019 is the 10th anniversary of the incredibly underrated "Where the Wild Things Are" film. Invite Karen O and Carter Burwell and do a screening in the museum with a live soundtrack.

Wouldn't be sad if this list was just a big portion of the lineup. Some thoughts: Rateliff--Gotta figure they'll be making a triumphant return, somewhere later in the day on the fort. Maggie Rogers--I will eat the brand new snapback I bought this year if she isn't there after the introduction she received. Bon Iver--I'm ready for this, or a Justin Vernon acoustic set. The Kinks--How many Newport Bands cover strangers? They've got to be trying to get this. Lucy Dacus/Hop Along--Add these two and Alvvays and I'd already be satisfied with the lineup Not your post but Todd Snider--It's beyond time. It's inconceivable to me that he's never played.
Beaker pointed out that it's the fests 60th and Seeger's 100th. What will they pull out for that? I figured we'd get Mavis headlining again for her 80th. All-Star Seeger tribute in the Speak Out/Change slot? Dare I say...Bruce doing Seeger sessions? No, I daren't.

I did look into it and if I lived closer to the bus departure location (Berklee), that would make sense. As it stands now, I'd have to be out my door at 6:30 am to guarantee making the NFF bus, which means that I'm getting up somewhere around 4:30 am.
The point isn't to go, the point is to go and enjoy the music and the experience, not be face down in the grass by 3 pm.
Been thinking we might get Big Thief back next year. Would settle for Adrianne Lenker and Buck Meek solo sets though
I would be very, very, very surprised. When Adrienne played her long guitar solo at Newport the stage hands all looked confused and upset and were even talking to the other bandmembers during it... judging by their reactions it seemed like they were asking if she was gonna get on with the song. The NFF Twitter/Instagram accounts never mentioned anything about their set (If i’m remembering correctly). Anytime another band in the Folk family mentions Big Thief, Newport does not retweet if with “Newport Folk Alum Love” as they do with seemingly everybody else. NFF does not follow Big Thief on Twitter despite Big Thief following NFF. I could be reading into things but it doesn’t seem like that band will be back.
I was one of the people that hated their set on first listen. I’ve since listened to it on NPR two or three times and listened to their albums a lot and I love them now and would be happy to see them again but unfortunately, I doubt it.
