my first year of high school there was a guy a year older than me down the street that was kind enough to drive me to school for gas money. his whole family was absolutely lovely, just a fuckin' norman rockwell painting this family. they were all yankees, and every school day i'd walk to their house, where they always had a full on family sit down breakfast meal with jugs of milk and OJ and shit on the table, just like a TV family. they were always so nice to me and each other.
so that all sounds good, but instead of maple syrup on the table, they would have a bottle of clear Karo corn syrup, and they would slather their pancakes in it. i was so happy to get my license and start driving myself to school so i could get away from that horror show.
Light or dark? I’ve never heard of either, but I do have a memory of my grandmother making simple syrup (water and sugar boiled together, basically) for pancakes. No idea how reliable that memory is though because it’s set in their house in Kentucky, so I couldn’t have been more than seven or eight, probably younger.

It was clear, so light I suppose.
Dark is made with molasses and is definitely not clear. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted dark, but I use light in my sugar cookie icing. That shit is cloyingly sweet, but besides that, it’s super thick. I can’t imagine putting it on pancakes.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
