i thought the first two episodes were great and absolutely hilarious. i was surprised at how good it felt being back in a Danny McBride comedy world. also loving how we are getting the Eli backstory.
the family lunch scenes were great, discussion of the disney wedding, Judy ripping on Amber, Adam DeVine's facial expressions, all great stuff.
episode 3 moved the story forward nicely but wasn't as funny, IMO, which is fine, the story this season is great so far.
B.J. is killing it this season.
the big question is we are three episodes in and haven't seen frame one of Uncle Baby Billy. i'm sure when he pops up it'll be explosive.

I binged the first season last weekend and then finally started season 2 on sunday. The boyfriend started watching while I was watching episode 2 and seemed to like it so I went back and binged season 1 again with him. now I'm finally caught up!

I think, halfway through the season or so, I have more big picture/character based thoughts on the show than on last night's particular episode, although I think the episode sort of crystallizes what is true about the show for me:
- Judy is the best character on the show. - That's because Baby Billy is only a part-time player, obviously we need more Baby Billy. - Eli and Jesse (and family) are fine. Sometimes funny, sometimes not. - Kelvin SUCKS.
Judy is hilarious but also batshit crazy and a huge turnoff for me to recommend this show to other people. Like I love this show and I know a ton of people that would dig the concept of a show that rips on megachurches but the whole deal with Judy's character is just so weird and fucked up. Having said that I do think Edi Patterson is one of the funniest people in comedy right now. Her line delivery is perfect.
The muscle men were funny at first but they are really pushing it as Kelvin's main storyline and it's running out of juice.
Eli and BJ are really stealing the season so far for me. Goodman is such a pro. The small exchange with the tomato on the windshield was hilarious just for how Goodman acted it. And everything with BJ has been goofy as hell.
Danny McBride is Danny McBride and always entertaining, but I do find myself not really caring about the investment plot. I'm sure things will pick up after the way this episode ended.

The muscle squad has definitely run its course, but I was looking forward to seeing them in the desert during the 40 days and nights. I had a bet with the boyfriend on how many would make it out alive.

loved episode 4. judy in the bathroom scene was incredible. i like the idea of having BJ's family just be a regular friendly secular family. they don't hate christianity or anything but obviously have to start pushing back when judy goes full crazy on them. kind of provides a viewpoint i imagine most of the audience has.
i hope we get some blooper reel of the bathroom scene. no way the actor playing the sister didn't completely break acting across from edie at some point.
loved BJ's line about how his sister's attitude has been holding back male fashion for years.
i appreciate mcbride taking a bit of a step back this season to let the other characters shine, although i'm not really vibing with kelvin's story right now. but eli's, judy and bj's, and now uncle baby billy's are all great. and of course it's awesome having uncle baby billy back, the opening flashback scene with his son was hilarious and heartbreaking.
i wish gideon had more to do this season, Skyler Gisondo is such a talent and I like that this character allows him to stretch his comedy wings a bit more than his past roles.

Agreed on BJ's family being the reality check to all this insanity. I like that they used it as a symbol to show how BJ has dove into the Gemstone insanity fully.
Bathroom scene was top tier. So incredibly uncomfortable.
I lost it a little when Jesse started crying when he was saying how he didn't have the money. For a comedy, they do well with making defined characters, and that's exactly how I would have expected Jesse to react in that situation.
I wasn't with you all on the god squad before the episode but see what you are talking about now. I feel like this episode sets up that both Jesse and Kelvin's ways to start something of their own have really failed miserably. I think more of the rest of the season will be focused on the infighting within the family. I loved how Eli finally said what pretty much has probably been thinking the entire series about how the kids are all embarrassing.

can't remember it exactly but i loved BJs line to Judy. i think she said something about them hating christians and he was like "no we just like to hangout and laugh together".

Another episode that wasn't that funny, but it set up a lot of the plot for the rest of the season, I think. It was nice to get a little more development with Eli's marriage as there has been set up a definite difference between the outward show and the reality of it.
I wanted to give a special shout out to the actor playing young Jesse. He really nailed Danny McBride's speech pattern on a couple of lines.

It was the same kid from last season's interlude episode right? I remember that being a takeaway before.
I've definitely noticed this show isn't afraid to step away from jokes in order to tell a good story. I also feel like there's still a lot of subtle humor just in how Goodman and Goggins portray their characters and deliver their lines.
Especially with Goggins talking to the Gemstones about his wife. "She didn't like none of yall, especially you Kelvin. You know what she said? You have the most boring haircut.. in the world. Zero. Give that boy some mousse."

haven't watched the episode yet but just reading that quote in Goggins' voice made me laugh.
Yea the last episode was a little weak but gave some crucial info on how the Gemstones became so wealthy and the beginning of the Megachurch. Uncle Baby Billy is the best character name I've seen in a while, I like just saying it at random times around the house lol. It just rolls off the tongue.

I actually thought both interludes were great, and found myself wondering if I'd like a prequel more than the actual series (which I like). Goggins delivery of that line was so perfect about Kelvin's haircut, I found that hilarious.
I am back in that spot where some of this makes me feel uncomfortable again. I didn't grow up in a megachurch, but did grow up in an evangelical church and the way that the Gemstones talk just isn't very accurate to me. My uncle has been a pastor for almost 50 years. He'll tell me jokes with a punchline of "bullshit" or something like that but it's not a regular part of his vernacular. And this isn't a judgment - my language certainly isn't pristine. I just don't think it's accurate, and it takes me further away from being in on the joke.

i can see how having personal experience like that could take you out of the immersion a bit. but the way i view the show is it isn't intended to be humor about a messed up family who runs a megachurch, it's just humor about a messed up family (who happen to run a megachurch). just like how eastbound isn't a critique of baseball, and vice principals isn't a critique of school teachers or administrators. the humor is in the characters, not in any observations about the institutions they happen to be a part of.

Honestly think they write the interlude episodes just so they can show off how much the kid they have playing Jesse can nail Danny McBride's line delivery mannerisms
I also think Judy is fucking hilarious and actively look forward to all of her scenes

That's fair. I think I'm also angry at the American Church as an institution and so I wish that there would be a way to parody it that rang a little more true for me. That probably isn't their intent though.
Also, I started writing a pilot treatment for a show I was creating based on a corrupt church. It was more The OC than Gemstones. Maybe I'm a little bitter that Danny McBride has a little more cachet to get his series made than lil ol potent potables from inforoo dot com.

That line was great. Also, the look on his face when he thought he wasn't getting a gift at Christmas was gold. He was so close to a full freak out.
