I'm taking it slow through chapter 2 still. Doing missions last and just exploring a bit and doing side stuff and stranger missions. I just busted Micah from jail and now am heading towards where Javier is (I think blackwater).
I love this game. Literally just trying to get from point a to point b (the Micah mission to the Javier mission) led me to like half a dozen little side things or discoveries. Had a shootout with a group of o Driscoll's, helped save a stranger from some robbers, tried hunting a bit. It's awesome
I went in with a solid plan last night to make some progress on the main story. I was really committed to it. And then I went to the gunsmith in Rhodes and insanity ensued.
Long story short, 8 hours later, I did exactly 1 main story mission, but found some treasure, got eaten by a gator. Had a second horse die as I lept off a cliff running from wolves, collected a ton of pelts, saw a few lantern shows (they are amazing btw and they change pretty regularly), and did a bunch of side missions.
BTW, I got the companion app on my phone now. It is great because I can look at my journal and set waypoints on the map from there. My wife was helping me (first game she has ever actually enjoyed watching) and doing the map stuff until she fell asleep. And it is great / horrible at work since it gives me one more way to keep thinking about the game. I keep reading the journal and catching up.

Yea I also got the app on my old phone (to drain that battery instead of my current one) but wish it was compatible with more devices. I have an Android tablet and a Chromebook but both don't work with the app. I'd much prefer the bigger screen.
Also forgot about getting a treasure map. Guy wanted to sell it to me cuz he was leaving the country. I didn't want to pay $10 so I threatened him until he gave it to me. I also stumbled upon a gold prospector who did some sifting and found a gold nugget.
I tied him up with my lasso, stole the nugget, and then tossed him into the water nearby. He was still tied so he drowned. I get more evil when I'm out in the wild with less witnesses lol

Trying REALLY hard to be good. But dragging people behind my horse is so much fun! Have you left someone hogtied on the railroad tracks yet? I highly recommend it.

Also, you guys are scaring me with all this talk of dead eye, treasure maps, companion maps, etc. I don't even know which health meter is for what, but it hasn't mattered. I just pet my horse a lot. I'm just doing the tasks the game is telling me and not really worrying too much about all these ancillary stuff. I don't know how to do all the stuff you're talking about. Am I doing it wrong? I'm at 11% I believe.

The help screens in the options menu are insanely detailed and helpful. Worth checking out when you've got some time...if your interested in some of those things

You are doing nothing wrong. The story itself will give you everything you need and can be played by itself. It teaches you most of what you need to know and is amazingly well done.
Treasure maps just get you money and kit faster but you dont need earlier Dead eye... I would take the time to learn about. In the first game it became incredibly OP by the end of the game. It feels more balanced this time around but gives you a huge edge when you get jumped by 5 guys on a path.
Everything else is color to the whole world that enriches the story around you. Strangers are hilarious. The shows are great, but if you just do the story, it is still an incredible game, AND you can go back through once you have experience and play in the larger world.
I like the game, but it's continually hard for me to reconcile the lack of agency you have in the main campaign that you have in the rest of the game. You basically follow a bunch of fucking morons around, who your character openly despises, and then you have to murder a bunch of people. I'm not sure what the alternative would be, but I find it very frustrating to be boxed into encounters over and over.

Welcome to video games.
I never felt this way about GTA5. Everyone's motivations made sense.

Yea I think it was chapter 4 and I went to start a Dutch mission and the cutscene started with Hosea saying that I get to be the deciding pick on what we do next. I was super excited to be able to choose but I wasn't given a choice at all

What is dead eye and what does it do? I have found that sometimes when I'm surrounded and aim it goes right to the target without deadeye and then sometimes it doesn't. Sorry for the ignorance.

Click in the right stick to activate it. It slows down time and you can target enemies or just shoot them. Really helpful when jumped

Holy shit, if that's what I think it is I kind of stumbled upon it early but didn't follow any path or trail. Commented about my findings somewhere in here. Now I want to go back and look
