Generally parties don't become official until mid-Feb through early-March. They will just start trailing in over the coming weeks. I'm sure the majority will be posted here too.

Thank you! And I just get in line at the venue before the parties? Why do people pay upwards of $1000 for the bands then? Does that garauntee access? I’m guessing some shows are free and others have a cover? If I don’t rsvp will I not be allowed in even if I wait in line? I’m sorry for all the questions but I’ve never done sxsw before and it’s pretty confusing
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

Yeah to many of the parties there aren't always guaranteed entries, so badges get priority. There are parties each day though that are super easy to get in and some that don't meet capacity and offer reduced ticket prices. I have found that some of the day parties are easier, but you can find a cool show each day as long as you keep back up plans in mind. Waterloo Records is always an easy option each day re: day parties. Their lineup is usually solid, but probably won't come out until a couple of weeks before the fest.

Good advice and I absolutly will but that can’t really be all there is to it right?
Most of the good shows get announced in late February. You'll also notice the same bands play up to 10 times over the week. So if you missed an act at one showcase, it's likely you can catch them at several others throughout the day/week. Like the SXSW house band Thee Oh Sees who play 5+ shows every year.
Can somebody explain to me how getting into shows works? I’m on the website and it looks like the music pass is like 1,000$. That can’t be right. If all I want to do is run around town and see concerts (like those oh sees shows) how do I do it?
The $1000 pass is for the badge. This gets you into all of the official showcases and panels. There is also a wristband that is usually between 150 and 200. This gets you secondary access to official showcases. If there is room at a venue after the badge line has entered you will get in. There will be some showcases that are badge only but there aren't many and those are usually clusterfucks even if you have a badge. You can only buy a wristband if you are a local or book on of their hotel packages. I've heard that some out of towners have been able to purchase wristbands onsite at the box office but it sounds like this varies year to year. If you want to attend official showcases the wristband is a fantastic option. It is also possible to attend some official showcases without a badge or wristband. If capacity allows some venues will charge a cover. One disadvantage of this option is limits your ability to jump from venue to venue.
During the day there are unofficial parties/showcases. Most are free and open to anyone. As others have pointed out many of these "require" you to RSVP beforehand but most don't actually check the RSVP. Do512 is a good resource as is showlistaustin.com. Most parties won't be announced until the weeks leading up to the fest.

could always volunteer if you have the time. Perk is a free badge. Ive been doing it for years.

Thank you this was super informative and helpful! I’m guessing you just get the 200$ wristband on the sxsw website? I think that’s a route I will take but it seems like everyone is confused and just runs around and ends up somewhere

If I can just pick single days to volunteer here and there I might do that as well. Paid for a weekend on acl this year and then went the second weekend free cause I volunteered

She was a favorite last year and I wouldn't be surprised to see her return.
Foal's tour begins in Mexico City on the 17th. I'm really doubting they have any need to be at SXSW given the pullback on major artists but I suppose it somewhat has a chance. Maybe a Film/Interactive closing night exclusive. Hopefully they come back to TX.
Wristbands are on sale now for 149. I decided to pick one up since I am completely off during the span of the festival, am not volunteering this year and may be leaving Austin for some travel work at the end of march.
I did SXSW one year and I’m still confused. Best advice I have is avoid the Rachel Ray party. Damn thing is a circus.
Edit-I mean seriously, those people act like they have never seen free food.
What’s not to love? 🤷🏻♀️
Long long lines. People fighting over food like it was the end of times. I said fuck it and listened to the music. Then left and got a sandwich at Whole Foods.

I didn’t see anyone get into a fight. It was def crowded and the line to get in was long. But it was worth it imo bc it was a full day event once you’re in and you don’t have to pay a cent.
I hope it is free. KPO, is your band trying to play again this year?
Nope, my album is complete (minus a few mixing issues). Shooting for a Q3 release. I’ve been busy trying to find an internship and recording when I can. Won’t have a show ready for this year but I will definitely be shooting for next year. Gonna also be partnering with a music marketing firm come August so hopefully that will Help get the word out.
