Yeah that herpes consultation app/website/whatever just wanted to promote itself in a way that would get them guaranteed press, so they used the biggest music festival in North America to do it.
I'd be really curious to see how a "holy grail" artist like Kate Bush or reunited The Smiths would impact overall attendance at this point. Would Kate Bush pull in a huge worldwide (and older) fanbase there primarily to see her and pack the main stage, or would it be of an Aphex scenario where she's in the Mojave at night with a strong, but not gigantic crowd?
That said, I think there's a better chance of Zeppelin or Daft Punk playing than Kate Bush.
If I were Kate Bush, I don’t know what the appeal of playing Coachella would be.
I think it would be a great way to introduce a new generation to her music, which is much better suited to today's pop music than say the Stone Roses or whatever. Like I can't imagine someone that likes Lorde/Sia/HAIM NOT liking Kate Bush, they probably just don't listen to her.

It's a nice idea, and never say never, but the few live shows she's ever played have been elaborate productions. It would make a lot more sense for her to book a run of theater dates in New York. They'd all sell out, and she would have way more control over every aspect of the presentation. An overseas outdoor festival is probably pretty intimidating for someone who hasn't done anything resembling a normal tour in like 40 years.

That’s the point though, Kate Bush pretty aggressively doesn’t seem to care about connecting with an new generation of fans.
I think the only way Taylor headlines is if she's a replacement. I think her prime window was missed. Should have been booked following 1989. Adele and Rihanna are definitely the top 2 pop acts that can possibly be booked. Taylor wouldn't be a bad booking if her new album is generally received well. She'd be a very solid #2 headliner.

Adele and Rihanna play arenas while Taylor plays football stadiums. I feel weird defending her to this degree, but she's a much bigger live draw than either of those two. Reputation was a downgrade of an album, but it sold incredibly well and did not diminish her draw as a live act.
Taylor Swift has critical acclaim. “Can she bounce back after a bad last album?” is a fair question, but Red and 1989 are respected albums.
My bigger question is can she compete in this new era of pop? There’s been a shift in pop culture as of late and IMO has sort of divided the big names into two groups, the old and the new. The old guard like Katy Perry, P!nk, Lady Gaga and possibly Justin Timberlake I think are having difficulty keeping up in the current streaming age (aside from tour sales) and Taylor Swift is in danger of getting left behind. Ariana Grande, Drake, Beyoncé and obvious newcomers like Billie Eilish have been able to adapt but Taylor and JT? Eh, I don’t know about that.
How this relates to Coachella is, if they’re going to continue going with pop, is that the direction they want to take? Sure, Taylor is massively popular but pop culture relies heavily on relevancy and I’m not sure how Taylor will fare if she releases another Reputation. I’d argue she doesn’t have the legacy to support her either.
I’m not saying Taylor Swift would be an awful choice since she’ll definitely move tickets. I just think there’s a smarter approach with pop headliners that I think Coachella should take instead of booking artists like her or JT. Coachella prides itself by being the forefront of the current culture among US festivals and I’m not sure if they’re as big of a part of the conversation anymore as much as they used to be.
This is largely what I was thinking when I said she’s at risk of not being able to bounce back. Although I think the explanation is a little more simple, Taylor kept working with Max Martin after the rest of the world moved on. (And Justin Timberlake is still working with Timbaland for some reason). Taylor Swift has the brand recognition to easily bounce back with some new writers, it’s just a question of whether she recognizes that. Early returns are not promising.
That's funny. Even if it hadn't been, I was thinking "ok.. a lot of adults were in a place and herpes, which like fucking everyone has some form of, spread. Amazing."

“We all got herpes anyway! Right? Right?!?!”
Pretty much. Or, in the sake of accuracy, half of us do.
"Approximately 50 percent of the adult population in the United States has oral herpes, typically caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). Most people contract oral herpes when they are children by receiving a kiss from a friend or relative."

I really don't like the "this artist plays these venues, while they play THESE venues" thing. Just because an act doesn't book football stadiums, doesn't mean that they can't. Adele and Rihanna both could easily sell out the Rose Bowl with the likes of Beyonce, Coldplay, Taylor, and whoever else has sold it out. Didn't Adele sell out like EIGHT Staples Center shows on her 2016 tour?? I'm extremely confident that Adele wouldn't have trouble selling out football stadiums. (Just checked, she played 8 Staples shows from Aug 5-Aug 21 with a couple shows in Phoenix in between, if I'm not mistaken all sold out)

Saw Television again last night. Haven’t seen them in 5 years or so and the last time was rough. Last night was amazing though. The band is always unbelievably great but Tom Verlaine seemed way more into it this time around and actually gave a good effort on the vocals. This is one of those bookings that feels like it would have already happened if it were going to, but I’m adding them to my wishlist.

Also, give me fucking Wolf Eyes goddamnit.
Only thing that gives me hope for Television is the unreleased album Verlaine has been teasing forever.

Every once in a while they book something that completely surprises me and I hope one year it’s Wolf Eyes/Universal Eyes/anything Nate Young. But I know deep down you’re right.
The new Madonna dates (i.e. doing a small venue tour with five shows at the Wiltern in November) and Bruce news (that he has a new E Street album and will tour in 2020) would each line up nicely for a potential 2020 Coachella headline. I feel like some of the sense that this year's lineup was "underwhelming" was the lack of one blockbuster anchor headliner, and I think either of these would be that.
Bruce was talking about this solo album finally coming out in June years ago. He's notorious for long lead time teases. If he literally just wrote the songs in April, I highly doubt the album will be ready to go, released and touring on it by next spring. The E Street Band only has so much time left, and maybe he does want to play / would do a one-off pre-album release, but I wouldn't look at him as any more likely because he's talking about another E Street album.

The Cure’s Robert Smith called into the SiriusXM program “Debatable” on Friday to announce that he is curating a festival in the Los Angeles area later this year that will feature performances by The Cure and ten other bands. Smith also curated last year’s Meltdown festival in London.

Have they ever booked a legacy headliner that played Roo first? Beside that, Steven Van Sandt is doing his solo thing for a bit so I don’t know if they’d have time to record a new album before next year. Another aside, they whiffed on Tallest Man. The fact AEG promoted the tour and he seemed real sensitive to the crowd banter and movement makes me believe he was probably offered and said no, but his live show was phenomenal and would have been great to see on the polo grounds.

Correct - they’ve been the first major US fest to book all of the legacy headliners they’ve booked. And notably, many of the big ones they haven’t gotten - Metallica, Bruce, Elton - have played other fests already. But your guess is as good as mine as to whether that’s intentional or incidental.

This is a major reason I don't see Elton John happening.

If they place value in being the first to book a legacy headliner, they might also place value on being the last. But for the most part, I agree, and the same goes for Bruce/Metallica.
