The Cure’s Robert Smith called into the SiriusXM program “Debatable” on Friday to announce that he is curating a festival in the Los Angeles area later this year that will feature performances by The Cure and ten other bands. Smith also curated last year’s Meltdown festival in London.
Oh shit, the London edition had Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine and Mogwai. Interested to see how this turns out.
Also apparently there was a band there called I Like Trains, which is a great name.
If Goldenvoice refuse to book Bruce Springsteen because Bonnaroo booked him a decade ago, that would be dumb as hell.
I think of it less as a "refuse to" and more as a value prop. There's more value in being the first to nab someone after 30+ years than in being just another festival to do so. But again, I don't even know that I think this is a rule or anything; it's just a consistent trend so far.
Was there anything special about them booking AC/DC? I'm not being snarky just genuinely wondering.
It was the first major show of the new tour and their first shows in five years. IIRC they didn’t announce late summer-fall US dates until after the fest had sold out.

I mean, they might be the best selling hard rock act of all time. Back In Black is the third most bought album of all time(if I remember correctly). They hadn't played together in a while. Coachella was the kickoff for their new tour, and probably their final tour with Brian Johnson. It was a pretty big fucking deal whether ya like em' or not. Also not being snarky. It was a pretty underappreciated booking.

Elton is for sure massive, and the final tour angle helps, but he's also played over 100 farewell shows already, including a chunk in LA. I know he's an expensive ticket and the chance to see him GA on his final tour would be a big draw for a lot of people. But he's also pretty off brand for the festival (and not even just the current festival), and with previous headlining gigs at Bonnaroo and OSL, plus the amount of shows he plays in general, I don't think he's really that rare. Makes more sense to sell out a few more LA area arena dates.

I love Elton John and my gf and her family might be his biggest fans. I would be really disappointed in them booking someone any of us could have seen in any city over the last 2 years though. At least Bruce and the band went away for a bit.

Metallica seems like an inevitable Eminem style booking to me. Already played the other majors, nothing particularly special about it, but they seem easy to book and they're still a huge name.
Based on this article (https://www.desertsun.com/story/life/entertainment/music/desert-trip/2019/05/01/desert-trip-wont-happen-2019-founder-says/3646204002/), I wouldn't bank too hard on any Desert Trip in the future. It seems like every year they don't do it, and it's "maybe next year."
And if they did book the first Bruce show back, it would be roughly the same gap between shows as when LCD "retired," and be similar to AC/DC's situation, where it's a return after a few years away. It would also give the 'gram crowd a lot of opportunity for bandana inspired fashions. But it would be a deliberate swerve back towards the booking style of a few years ago, over the approach of this year.
The real question is, do they feel that this year's sales were down and need to be fixed by pulling in an older demo, or is the cachet of the festival key, and having forward thinking headliners and lower card acts who might not actually move as many tickets more important for the long term?
We just came off a couple of the most diverse, mainstream/pop lineups in the history of this festival. The natural progression is not Bruce and Elton.
Well, this festival has made its mark by not ever committing to a "natural progression" for more than a couple of years. I also don't think they're going to book Bruce/Elton, but I don't think we can just plug and play mega pop stars, rappers, one K Pop group, multiple Latin singers, etc. until the end of time.

There was only 1 K Pop (BLACKPINK) group but also a K Rock (HYUKOH)and 2 J Pop (Perfume and Kero Kero Bonito) off the top of my head.
It's not like there's a shortage on Rappers, Pop stars, Latin, and Asian music dude, they can pretty much book those acts until the end of time if they wanted to. I don't think the international growth at Coachella is a phase. It's not going to outweigh everything else being booked at Coachella, but I think there will always be a pretty good presence of it going forward.
I’m just sick of looking at Zedd, DJ Snake, and Dillon Francis on the second line. What are the chances they end the beef with Deadmau5 and bring the cube? Or finally book Griz? Any chance they can get Prydz to bring his Epic show to close out the Outdoor or Mojave?
I know Flume is likely, but his “live” show is boring because he doesn’t mix.
Even deadmau5 and Prydz wouldn’t even be *that* big of a deal because of how often they show up on insomniac lineups. I know I just contradicted my first paragraph, but I’m just trying to think of electronic subs that might move tickets. Chem Bros and Hot Chip are not going to move tickets in 2019. Skrillex can be a huge name and could be possible if he drops new music, or Dog Blood.

You want to sub out boring edm with other boring edm? We always get a couple of rare/good electronic acts and then they book some shit that attracts a crowd. I don’t see the point in bickering over swapping shit for piss.
