Artists like Ice Cube, Tech N9ne, and Cypress Hill also get booked at these butt rock festivals. They appeal to the same audience that says they hate most rap music.
Action Bronson is a white rapper. This is all fairly obvious.
Would Mac Miller have played these fests?
I don't know how to say this without sounding condescending but acts like Tech N9ne, Ice Cube, Yellawolf, Immortal Technique, Wu Tang, etc etc I understand why they play. They're kinda "edgy" "lyrical" acts that appeal to older dirtbag white people. I just don't think Action Bronson fits that. Maybe his shows on Vice exposed him to some of that crowd? I don't know.

He samples a lot of classic rock and is a pretty funny guy on stage. Like I doubt a lot of people that go to these festivals are most excited to see him. But they'll be entertained while he's performing.

Action Bronson is a Ghostface Killah knock off so that’s why
My boss is a 50-something bourgeois asshole with terrible taste in everything but he was considering going to an Action concert because he liked his cooking show and thinks Action is hilarious.
Edit: Also is it actually even possible to spell "bourgeois" correctly on the first try?

I say this with all kindness, as I actually was a buyer of Dr. Lecter on the first day due to people I know up here. But, there is a fundamental truth that has been talked about when it comes to white rappers and crossover appeal (Yelawolf and Action Bronson show that immediately here). It isn't to say their music isn't great, or at least measurable. But there is a considerable argument to be made that their careers are propped up by the fact that their white fans understand them, better than they understand black influences. We usually can't talk about this openly anymore, because it seems like an a front to them. But it's what I've been trying to call out since they repeatedly put Eminem at the top HL position twice, while Jay-Z and Stevie Wonder were pushed down to 4 and 5. There is as much to say that the closest Bonnaroo has gotten to a black HL is the Roots pre-show and now finally Childish Gambino after this much time. So while I see that as a net positive, it's still a truth that hopefully is altering, but really slowly in the rest of the festival marketplace.
Mostly agree, Stevie and Jay-Z were 3 and 4 actually (still wrong though. Under Kings of Leon and Dave Matthews? Really)
Also, Kanye's headlining slot in 2014 was 2nd behind Elton John. Hard to argue with that placement. Also Kendrick and The Weeknd both came in 3rd on the billing. The people in front of Weeknd make more sense than Kendrick but he was still on the come up then.
Last thing, Eminem's show was absolute trash in 2011 and on a short list of worst shows I've ever seen BUT his booking is appropriate. Google is happy to tell me that "Eminem is the best-selling hip hop artist of all-time and the best-selling artist of the 2000s." Now some portion of that is because he's white. But its not Bonnaroo's fault that Eminem is one of the biggest artists ever and is billed as such.
All these points are valid.
And being corrected is good. Though it's obvious that if Kanye didn't get billed that high, he would have blown his shit. 2011 was the most trash year for me, on levels, and the rain didn't help. But that show was straight garbage within 10 minutes if I remember my experience correctly. He DID deserve his level tho, but then doubling down on him years later when he clearly is sucking showed me that they only working it by the numbers. And you know what I mean, even if it's uncomfortable.

If they truly wanted to fuck with the system they would have booked Danny Brown, who would have gladly done it.

If you're wondering -- the reason he's troubled by your call for edgy or lyricism is that... *to* too many Tech N9ne is a weird embarassing figure with a fucked up past, Ice Cube is the smartest and also the edgiest of this group, Immortal Technicque's lyricism is annoying in a way that say a Black Thought's is not. Even Bronson is far better on that level - His VICE exposure does matter though. Just throwing that there are some premises not agreed upon.

Yeah, I'd say so. I can only really picture them late on What a la Deadmau5, LCD, Phish.
Like Tyler (845-10) -> NIN (11-1)
Don't think it's likely though.
NIN can be late, but the last show they played at Roo was almost 3 hrs. I don't see them knocking that down, but they would have to base their schedule around them in some way. IT IS better late night and not HL because of the lighting effects and styling, but confirming 2.5hrs with nothing behind them might be enough to get them a real contract to show (for the same amount or more money) on What.
last time NIN played it was their farewell tour and they were playing long sets like that. 90 minutes is a pretty standard show for them otherwise, and I don’t think they’ve gone up in stature at all since then

I can hear that argument out, I still think it needs to be a 2 hour late HL show, which has been done.

Just sayin'
Danny Brown is more punk than 99% of bands that play those festivals

Gotta come in here you guys don't REALLY think bonnaroo booked NIN for a 2 hour late night set correct? Not this bonnaroo
Edit: i would love for this, but i would think the chances are pretty slim
I popped into the Coachella thread and they're talking about Lil Nas X and I got scared so I came here. That would be suuuuch a waste of a good spot at Roo. I've only heard Old Town Road a handful of times but
My life is a movie Bull ridin' and boobies Cowboy hat from Gucci Wrangler on my booty
I can't handle that. But then again I like Post Malone well enough so maybe my opinion'll change.

I 100% agree that I don't want him to take a good spot on the lineup, it would really just be an entire meme of a set. But I appreciate the artist because he's totally just grabbing trends and understanding how social media works and using it to his advantage and I think it's humorous and pretty smart. I think he definitely knows he's not putting out masterpieces but he laughs about it and doesn't take it seriously. As a music fan I listen and cringe, but trying to look past it and seeing what his doing makes me smile. Definitely don't take a nice lineup spot for that though
