Too many Phish reccs to keep track of so I just went ahead and watched a documentary about them
Can give you very specific recs based off taste if you want. would be interesting to see if 3post1jack1 and I would come to same answer (hint: we won't which is why it's fun)
I think Bittersweet Motel is on YouTube. Great doc, is that what you watched?
I watched It
The part where they talk about people asking them for pictures and then taking a picture that cuts off everyone’s head is a move I used to do all the time before digital cameras.
What did people in 2012 think of them? I wasn't there (went the year before and after, somehow) but always wondered what the takeaway was from someone who was seeing them for the first time. Well received? Were people like wtf is this?
First Roo, first Phish show. Knew very little about them. Had a blast dancing in the rain.
How long was Friday night's set in 2009? I see it was scheduled 11-2. Being Phish, I doubt they ended before 2. How long was it total?
It was right at about 3 hours. I thought it was a pretty great set.

I like the slower ones that don’t use the piano as much in the front, because I think it gives the jam a bouncey feel that I don’t care for.

Hmmm. Maybe this? Jam starts around 5 minute mark, it's crappy quality and the video is super shaky so I can't even watch it but is this what you mean? Or is this too piano forward?

I'll be shocked if Phish tour has much of a southern presence outside of Roo. I'd imagine they're counting heavily on the southern phans buying tix for their closest show. If there are southern dates surrounding Roo then I think it's fair to say this was a misstep in booking from a ticket sales perspective.
Rumors of a "6 pack" at MSG this summer are VERY interesting.

MSG is their home venue at this point
And agreed. I would think Bonnaroo would ask them to starve the south in order to generate ticket sales. Atlanta isn't on any of the rumored dates and obviously not Nashville. There is a Lock'n rumor which is interesting.

FWIW, these have some traction
6/12 Chaifetz Arena, St. Louis, MO 6/14 Bonnaroo, Manchester, TN 6/16 Bonnaroo, Manchester, TN 6/18 Molson Canadian Amphitheatre, Toronto, ON 6/20 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY 6/21 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY 6/22 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY 6/24 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY 6/25 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY 6/26 Madison Square Garden, New York, NY 6/28 BB&T Pavilion, Camden, NJ 6/29 BB&T Pavilion, Camden, NJ 6/30 BB&T Pavilion, Camden, NJ 7/2 Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, NY 7/3 Saratoga Performing Arts Center, Saratoga Springs, NY 7/5 Fenway Park, Boston, MA 7/6 Fenway Park, Boston, MA 7/9 Blossom Music Center, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 7/10 DTE Energy Music Theatre, Clarkston, MI 7/12 Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, WI 7/13 Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, WI 7/14 Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, WI
I hope we get something special and unique for the Friday set. No clue what that could be, but a superjam-type set or even a set of covers to entice the casuals to catch their Sunday show would be pretty cool. It's always easier to stay engaged with a concert when you know the songs.

Except the venue in Toronto isn’t called that anymore. It’s now the Budweiser Stage. If this was “official” wouldn’t they know that?
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on an overnight drunk, and in 10 days I'm going to set out to find the shark that ate my friend and destroy it. Anyone who wants to tag along is more than welcome.

all studio tracks. let me know if the link is broken, i can't see spotify embeds at work. i interpreted slow as slower tempo, so i tried not to include any frenetic phish tracks. also tried to keep it short because phish fans have a tendency to recommend several hours of listening and that can be overwhelming.

I just don't see it happening. Maybe a guest or two or a cover or two but I'm not expecting it to be wildly different from their regular shows. I'd be happy to be wrong and see them bust out a lot of unique covers but not sure they're going to plan for that

It will be an amazing set either way
Part of me wants that to be true because that'd be one less act I'd want to see for what's surely to be a heavily-conflicted Friday, but on the other hand if it's just a regular Phish set, the value in booking Phish for two separate days goes way down for me.

Phish typically always do multi night runs so booking then for one night might not be as appealing to their hardcore fans.
Either way, you could check out a chunk of the show and head to other late nights. Their sets are always long so it should work out anyway. I assume a portion of their set is unopposed but maybe not.

i agree with itrainmonkeys that it is far more likely to just be Phish doing Phish on Friday. but if it is a special set, you'll know within the first few songs. so you could always start at phish and then bail.

Related... I've tried to be careful about sharing songs with the goofier lyrics. Mainly because of Scott ripping on them during Analyze Phish. Especially the Stash lyrics, those could be a hard sell.

yeah and it's tough to find a phish song without goofy lyrics.
of course i like the goofy/nonsense lyrics because over time i've attached my own meanings to them. speaking specifically of stash the "is it for this my life I sought / maybe so maybe not" destroys me live every time. at that point in the show i'm always grinning like "what the fuck am i doing at this show with these weirdos and this weird music why do i love this i don't know".
but like do we really need to know what "set the gear shift for the high gear of your soul / you've got to run like an antelope out of control" means? when you are there and you hear it live it makes perfect sense. i've been lucky enough to be at two different shows with newbies who had never even heard antelope until they heard it live. after that huge build up when trey comes out with that solitary nonsense lyric, both the newbies found themselves teary-eyed after the song and hugging everyone around them and had no idea why.

Yea for sure. I think once people start to revel in the goofiness is a good sign that they're fully hooked.
And Fluff's Travels are the nonsense lyrics that always get me.

Farmhouse and Billy Breathes first got me into Phish. Those and my friend playing the New Year's live album. But I remember us genuinely liking a few songs on Farmhouse just as they were. We really liked "Farmhouse" the song and would drunkenly substitute lines for one of our friends names when listening. It wasn't until I started to listen to the live shows that I really got into them. Roo 2009 was my first time seeing them (actually the show in Tennessee the Wednesday leading into Roo was the first) and they lived up to the hype.
Definitely get a little bit of that "I wish I had seen them/knew about them back in their prime" feelings. I'm glad they're still going strong and I'd love to see them at Roo this year. I'm a casual fan for sure but have always had a good time at their shows.
as we suspected no other deep south tour dates. closest they come is st. louis and charlotte. should convince a few southern phans to head to bonnaroo.
always worth posting the setlist of the 7/4/2010 show:
PHISH, SUNDAY 07/04/2010 VERIZON WIRELESS AMPHITHEATRE AT ENCORE PARK Alpharetta, GA
SET 1: The Star Spangled Banner, Punch You in the Eye > Colonel Forbin's Ascent > Fly Famous Mockingbird, Camel Walk, Ocelot, Heavy Things > My Friend, My Friend > Lawn Boy, David Bowie, Gotta Jibboo
SET 2: Down with Disease[1] > Piper > Ghost > Waste, Julius > Mike's Song > Tela, Harpua > Killing in the Name[2] > Harpua > Weekapaug Groove
ENCORE: First Tube
[1] Unfinished. [2] Phish debut.
Disease was unfinished. Harpua contained a tease of London Bridge Is Falling Down. This show marked the Phish debut of Killing in the Name (Rage Against the Machine).
