bbq sides update: i ended up just picking up potato salad, cole slaw, and baked beans at publix when i went to get buns. the cole slaw was N A S T Y. i don't know why people think cole slaw should be sickeningly sweet like it's fucking skittles or something. potato salad was OK, bush's baked beans were OK.
pro tip on the buns, melt some butter in a skillet and lightly toast the buns in the pan.
the butt my friend brought was awesome. very lucky to have a friend who can cook like this.
yeah it's so hit and miss.
personal least favorite is when it's just sopping in vinegar/sauce
cabbage, carrots, light sauce, pepper that's it. no need to jazz it up with sugar
People talk about the NRA and the tabacco lobby but it's really Big Cole Slaw that we should be fighting. That shit rarely tastes better than edible and it comes with everything.

I rather have sweet slaw over the one drowning in vinegar.
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
My parents got me a George Foreman grill for Christmas. Made a delicious burger with it very easily. Any suggestions for minimizing smoke? I live in an apartment and would like to avoid the sprinklers ruining my stuff

I don't know about that but I have heard that they're excellent to wake up to the smell of crackling bacon.

Are you using butter to grease it? Butter has a fairly low smoke point (300ish) and will smoke at the recommended cooking temperature for burger patties (375-400° F). Beef tallow won't start smoking til around 425, so it's probably not that. If you're using cooking spray or canola, I can't say.

sprinklers are set off by heat, not smoke, don't stress it too much
Report on Pho. While presentation was very appealing, it was singularly lacking in taste. And I even used the good fish sauce. So I don’t know what I did wrong. But I’m buying it from now on. My kitchen was a mess.
My daughter got some sort of recipe kit subscription for Christmas. Just the recipe and kid-friendly instructions. She made herbed chicken breasts and roasted root vegetables. First time eating beets for me. It came out well. We ran out of time to make the lava cake that comes with it.
I like that she likes to cook and bake (she just turned 7) but she lacks patience and is resistant to direction (again, she just turned 7). It was a bit of an ordeal, though.

WTF? I like golden or red, beets rule. I like them roasted the best except for raw beet juice.

Sorry. I generally don't like root vegetables with the exceptions of onions. I can eat them but I rarely seek them out.

To me, they all taste completely different. They are healthy af too. I didn't like Turnips as a kid as I found them sulphury. But I threw one in a pot of stew I made last night. I'm not big on rutabegas, but I probably need to try them again. Carrots, Parsnips, Potatoes, sweet potatoes and Beets are my favorite root vegetables. Obviously onions (and garlic) are crucial for cooking though I don't want to normally eat a cooked onion (usually will get a few layers out of an onion when eating boiled crawfish).
The amount of nutrients and antioxidents you can get from them is pretty incredible. Though I find them to be mandatory ingredients for soups and stews, oven roasted brings out the most amount of sugars. You're a cook, and it's a good way to add some flavorful health to a plate.
Cube up root vegetable of choice and put in a bowl. Smash 2 or 3 toes of garlic and throw that in along with a chopped, fresh sprig of rosemary. Add about a half-cup of olive oil to the bowl along with salt and pepper and toss until coated. Bake at 400 for 45-60 minutes and turn occasionally with a spatula so they cook evenly. They should come out airy and crispy. Some people like to then throw those into a deep fryer for additional crunch and airy middle. But they're usually good enough like that. FWIW, I never tried roasting carrots or parsnips but would imagine the cooking time would be less for those.
Anyway, root vegetables are in season in the wintertime
