The man just signed the richest non-QB contract in the history of the NFL (per season as there have been bigger deals with longer terms). That deal will eventually be surpassed, but the Saints aren't a desperate team and don't typically piss away giant money. They lose on an occasional free agent like everyone does. But this is real shit at 5 years, 100MM, $61MM of new money guaranteed. It's technically a 5 year 96.25MM deal with the opportunity to bump to $100MM in 2022 and 2023 based on performance clauses. Florio has the contract outlined on NBC:
1) Signing Bonus of $20,000,000
2) 2019 Base of $1.648043MM fully guaranteed
3) 2020 Base of $11MM is fully guaranteed
4) 2021 Base of $12.6MM, $3MM is fully guaranteed w/ remaining $9.6MM is guaranteed only for injury at signing; fully guaranteed on 3rd day of 2021 League Year
5) 2021 Workout bonus of $200k fully guaranteed for injury only
6) 2022 Base of $15.35MM guaranteed for injury only and fully guaranteed on 3rd day of 2022 league year
7) 2022 roster bonus of $250k due on 5th day of league year; not guaranteed
8) 2022 workout bonus $200k guaranteed for injury only
9) 2023 Base of $15.5MM not guaranteed
10) 2023 Roster bonus of $250k due on 5th day of league year; not guaranteed
11) 2023 workout bonus of $200k not guaranteed
12) 2023 46 man per game roster bonus of $31,250 with a max of $500k
13) 2024 Base of $18.5MM not guaranteed
14) 2024 Roster bonus of $250k due on 5th day of league year; not guaranteed
15) 2024 workout bonus of $200k not guaranteed
16) 2024 46 man per game roster bonus $46,875 w/ maximum of $750k
For 2023 and 2024, deal has escalators that max out at $1.875MM each year with $375k payable based on 5 triggers tied to achievements in 2022 and 2023 - 12 TD's, 1,400 receiving yards, 1,400 and a playoff berth, 100 receptions and 100 receptions and a playoff berth.l
The reasons were posted prior. The additional reason is that we don't typically overpay for talent and just gave the highest contract out. The 16 points were Florio's analysis of the contract. Come on man, it's all in English and mostly on the last two pages though the discussion goes back to last year's thread.
Wait till Hopkins gets a new deal. Julio is going first and then Hopkins after that. I'm guessing next year?
Of course the deal will be surpassed based on market Thomas created. But neither is likely to outperform him over the long haul.
Outside of the 2014, 2015 and I think 2018 seasons, Jones only compares favorably in yardage. He generally catches at a higher % than Hopkins but is still 15-20% behind Thomas. He does have a solid yards per target number though.
Thomas is pretty far ahead of Jones' first 3 years, but I remember he got injured in his 3rd season which complicates the direct comparison.
What a courageous athlete, inventing the concept of the Big WR Contract by signing a slightly different deal to the one OBJ signed a year before
Truly a pioneer in our times
One was the record. The other one is the new record. Like the WR contract, OBJ now ranks second (tied w/ Landry) for all time receptions leader through 3 years. He'll be in 3rd place for 4 years after this season.

If I end up going to Florida for Labor Day, I do plan on dropping $50 in Mississippi on both the Saints and Patriots to win the Super Bowl. Pats are 6-1, and Saints are 10-1. Chargers at 16-1, Cowboys at 20-1 and Packers at 14-1 seem like some of the value picks maybe worth looking at.

We left too many on the table already. Maybe we get 1 more. This is unfortunate because it forces me to recognize the Patriots and Tom Brady who otherwise would be equals in this era. Championships are championships.
What happens to Michael Thomas when he's not catching passes from Drew Brees?
Covered yesterday. He catches passes 10% above Brees’ average completion level. So he remains the best receiver in the league and also remains on his journey of the best all time.
