So who's going to play in this thing? What songs do you hope/think they'll play?
I'm gonna take a wild guess and say Gramatik will join. Thought Eric Krasno would be a gimme but he's in Chicago that weekend. Don't know enough about his other collaborators to guess.
I hope some members of Brockhampton come over after their set is done. Solange would be tight too.
I wouldn't be too surprised to see the Dessners involved in some form or fashion. They both seem to enjoy collaborating. For some reason I have a feeling the lead singer of AJR will be there as well. Soul Rebels and Two Feet seem like decent bets too.
A sax-off between Griz and King Shabaka from TCiC would be dope.
I don’t get why people always wish guys on laptops would come out for these things. Like what would Gramatik even contribute to this “jam”?
How about Joe Russo, Soul Rebels, Jim James, John Prine, and maybesome other musicians that aren’t booked on the farm
I rarely find my self sticking up for “DJ’s” but gramatik plays guitar in his sets regularly, so I could see it. In the same way I couldn’t see why Griz would show up in the Kamari Washington Superjam, until I saw him throw down on the sax.
Should’ve done a poll, but how many of y’all are actually going to this over the other late night options?
I will just because Superjams in general are unique and interesting enough that they're at worth at least checking out. It also helps that I've seen BROCKHAMPTON before. I've wanted to see Girl Talk for a while now though so if I'm not feeling the SJ halfway through then I might head over there.
Really hoping they release some details about it soon.

My rankings for that time slot are probably:
Griz Superjam (the allure of the unknown) RL Grime (saw once from far away, reliable dance party) Brockhampton (i like about 6 tracks but coming from Phish, i’d likely be in the very back) Girl Talk (seen 3 times. if i hadn't ever, i’d be here)

This is my exact plan. Or if the Superjam is too crowded I'll check out some of BH.
I like RL Grime, but I've seen him and he'll just play his songs. I haven't seen Girl Talk in several years, should be a silly fun time.

I'll be there. There's literally nothing musical to compete with it late night Friday. I've said all I need to say about how I felt about Brockhampton live. Y'all going knock yourselves out. Girl Talk isn't anywhere near any part of the EDM spectrum I enjoy. "Yo Bonnaroo Raps" with DJ Mel is actually kind of cool, but that's Silent Disco. And then RL overlaps 45 minutes. RL is hit and miss and otherwise the only other option I'd consider - except I've seen him enough times (including already this year) and I'll probably go catch the last half hour after the superjam anyway because there isn't shit else going on until Kalliope.
Also, it would be nice if they would go ahead and drop the theme so we can more guess at where this is going.

I've seen him 7 or 8 times and I don't think he's ever just played his songs.

?
maybe i'm too ignorant of his music, but I saw him when he played Voodoo a couple years ago and it just seemed to be like I was listening to his album and various singles on shuffle? Like it was cool because the music was good but it didn't strike me as a particularly notable set.
I gotcha. He mixes in all kinds of stuff, but he does play a lot of his own stuff. I've never thought his sets were super great - mostly decent. His Clockwork performance I saw (14 or 15) was pretty trappy, and I liked that. And his b2b Baauer set I saw (14 I think) was also pretty fun. But otherwise, it's always like a C+ show. Some parts (the pop ones) bore and annoy me while his trap and drops are better to my liking.

i agree. i don't mind some pop, even poppy EDM is cool if it is mixed well and the DJ stays off the microphone, but with RL Grime the sudden shift from dark outer space trap into big vocal hook pop numbers kind of took me out of the vibe.
It's kind of weird they haven't announced much of anything other than it being fronted by Griz right?
iirc in the past they haven't announced additional superjam details until late may.
yeah I think the norm is a late announcement. Last year we got it in April right around the schedule, but I didn’t expect that to be the case again tbh.
What are the odds they hold off on details until weekend of?

I heard a rumour a few weeks ago that it's going to be dedicated to artists who have passed away. Which is IMO perfect and it leaves an extreme amount of talent to pool from.
I wouldn't say I was highly disappointed because there are some announced musicians in the Superjam that I have loved for a long time and seen many, many times like Jennifer Hartswick, James Casey, Sunsquabi, the Naughty Professor horns, some of Griz's live band members and Probcause who I haven't seen in a bunch of years. Musically, this looks to be a quality follow up to Pres Hall's superjam last year (my bad that was 2 years ago). I don't know who would have bagged on many years of weak superjams and included that, but if you did, you probably weren't there.
But I don't want to see Hobo Johnson and probably not Nicholas Petricca. I don't really care what either potentially brings to the table. There are a million better mfers that will already be there that probably could sing whatever pieces they're giving them better than they will. Deva Mahal is a balance on that though. I don't know enough about Noah Kahan to have an opinion on him. Nakho will probably be okay
Overall it's a big ? for me now. I'm not more excited than I was when they announced GRiZ was doing the superjam. This was my #2 going in. Again, I'm not saying it's letdown, but they could have brought in Sade or Chance or some shit I would more want to see doing vocals on covers. IDK We'll see.

I pretty much agree with all that. I will be at the Superjam when Phish ends and I hope it wows me. But if it does the opposite of wow me, i’ll ditch for simpler pleasures. Still, it does have potential. Low floor, high ceiling almost?

I think I will end up watching the whole thing again this year. There will be some unbilled artists probs and there are some talented backing musicians just like PHJB two years ago. Last year was awesome too but admittedly I'm a big Petty fan. He was the main reason I went to my 1st Roo in '13 and I haven't missed one since. Thanks Tom!

Gregg knows he's gotta deliver and I think he will bring it big time! I expect a killer set.
