Real only standouts for me tonight were Buttigieg and Harris. Unless you count Williamson giving me laughs, and Yang being incredibly quiet.
I do kinda have my doubts that tonight hurt Biden significantly, though. Harris took him to task, but I almost feel like the base that’s keeping him at the top won’t budge so easily.

Also, Yang feels almost non-existent in this debate. And he doesn’t seem to care.
He previously said he just wanted to introduce himself in the first debate and would draw lines between himself and the others more clearly once he qualified for the september debate.
As a yang ganger, I think it was risky as fuck and am not particularly excited right now.

Bernie was mad underwhelming to me personally.
Mostly agreed. Lots of people made good points and to me the western alliance is one of my biggest issues so I loved all the calling out of stupid moves by a terrible administration I usually am very pro Joy Reid, but the pro Harris comment about diversity around Harris’ post-debate surrounders was cheesy.

As someone who watched with people who aren’t really familiar with him, he didn’t leave a mark *at all*. Stats showed he talked 3 minutes, a whole 10 minutes less than Biden. Meanwhile other mid-tier candidates used these first debates to really make a name for themselves. Assuming Yang qualifies, he’s gonna have a lot of ground to make up.

I'm disappointed with Bernie's performance. If he doesn't change things up significantly, he's done. He didn't disclose enough policy details, he dodged questions, and seemed mostly interested in just bringing up his issues at every opportunity. No matter how much I may agree with his stances, he's not doing anything to tell me that he would be a better at the job of president than some of these others. The conversation has moved significantly leftward since the last election - and he's almost solely to thank for that - but if someone else adopts his policies but seems like they'd do a better job and have a better plan for enacting those policies, they're more likely to get my vote. I think Bernie has more integrity and a better record than the other candidates but his political savviness and image need some work. He comes across as a cantankerous old man even more than he did in 2016. He's still my first choice after Warren but I think the sun is setting for Bernie.

I don’t have a real preference between Warren and Sanders at this point though I’m leaning Warren. Can someone who supports either candidate sway me in a direction?
Some of my leftist friends are making me feel like shot for not going full socialist with Bernie, but I feel like Warren has been talking more about actual policy and plans.

I'm torn. I think Warren is a much easier sell and she's certainly better when it comes to explaining her ideas in a public setting, etc.
But I also feel like Sanders understanding of what it takes to fix things is a little more grounded in what we are actually up against. Where Warren gives "people power" lip service I think Sanders is right in that it will take a mass movement of people to actually bring about change. We will have to force Washington to listen to us. Sanders is cultivating and encouraging that kind of activism. We could go back and forth on their ideological differences and how much that actually matters but, if I'm being honest, I don't think that's the most important thing to look at. When we look at the massive challenges of something like the Green New Deal and then see the roadblocks ahead, we've got to question how much can even be done by our broken system.
As far as I can tell, Sanders is the only candidate in the race that would, as president, openly encourage his base to get out on the streets and demand change. He's also the only one that will point fingers and direct the public's rage at all the special interests that are working to bog down the changes we need. I mean on a massive scale. Not just making an example of a few folks or one industry. All of them.
Do I think that will get a lot done? Likely no, at least at first. But you continue to expose these people over and over. THEN you work to get them in line or voted the fuck out in 2/4 years.
I'm pretty much fine with either but I do think Sanders would be a better starting block for the battle ahead. It's also not the worst idea to get 4 years of Sanders first and then have a VP Warren run. Because we don't really have any more nationwide figures ready to take their places*. It's not the worst idea to try and stretch them out for more terms. Admittedly, you run the risk of tainting Warren if Sanders first term is a shitshow.
*AOC but I don't think it's a given she'll run so soon.

Harris going after Biden was fun to watch. That's basically my takeaway.
Bernie was hit and miss, as a supporter. I think that the motive and the political will is more important than the policy, but he probably needs to expand his message a bit in the next debate.

Harris was the best thing in the debate easily. At least as far as sticking out and having big moments goes. I feel good in my predictions on her.
Bernie has always been kinda blah at debates, IMO. I like the message of his speeches but he can be hit or miss on the campaign trail too. One of his problems is he's just not a natural bullshitter so he's not particularly good at canned lines or platitudes. He also isn't in a position where he had to stick out here.
To use a Chomsky term concision works against him in debates, as it does for anyone trying to talk outside the box on the debate stage or the evening news. It's hard to explain what taking on the military industrial complex or big pharma has to do with anything else he's talking about. You can easily assume and/or project a lot into that but he's not very good at pulling it all together in a limited time-frame. Which makes him come across as unprepared. Like people on the left "get it" but your average voter probably thinks he just sounds like a rambling old man. Which, to be fair, he is.
Lol Yang is lowkey genius. Guy can just show up to a televised presidential debate and say barely anything but still trend on social media because he didn't wear a tie.
Gillibrand is underrated. Not my #1 by any stretch, but she deserves way more attention than she gets
She does. I was listening to a spotty stream so I've got to do a full rewatch but it sounded like she was interrupting the most last might. She's got a lot to say but her time is running out if she can't gain some traction. I'm not sure that last night did enough to help.

I feel like talking more and discussing issues seems like a better way to get your name out there

yeah. Its a shame he thought being a normal polite person was a good strategy. God this format was balls, but I dont get what he was thinking.

I last night referred to her as the Mr. Meeseeks candidate. She all but openly said "look at me!" a bunch of times. I get her reasoning in doing that, cause she needs the attention. But to Mrs. LD and her aunt, who were watching the debate with me - they hated Gillibrand for being so interruptive and for talking long after the end of her given time. I had Gillibrand as 4th of 10 last night, they had her 8th.
I don't particularly care for Mayor Pete or consider myself a Christian, but damn his bit on the religious right being hypocrites on the immigrant kids in cages was great.
We need more Christian left types in the spotlight.
