A very effective ad indeed, even if it's horrifying...But that's the point. America needs to wake up and snap out of Trump's b.s. (the MAGA folks that is, and the mainstream media that constantly carries his water).
Also this Arlington stunt him and his Staff pulled is fucking atrocious. I really hope him and his Staff, especially the ones that assaulted the cemetery's groundskeeper, are fully held accountable. Fuck 'em all.
Obligatory “if a Dem did that their political career would be over and it’d dominate the news for literal months” comment.
I feel like this thing is going to be a complete coin toss. Harris is trying to ride the momentum from Biden dropping out all the way to the election. She’s been avoiding the press, and I don’t feel like it’s a great sign that her first interview since she’s become the Dem candidate is going to be a joint interview with Walz. It seems like they aren’t very confident putting her in front of cameras. I am not surprised. I hope she does well at the debate, but when she ran in the 2020 primaries she came off as completely disingenuous.
Populism is in, Kamala is no populist (Walz kind of is), but she can pretend to be by continuing to do speeches to the people
Corporate media is generally disliked across the board. Liberals and leftists hate Fox, CNN, NYT etc for being owned by conservatives. MAGAs just hate the press in general. The less they give access, the better

Yeah I'm guessing it is because of how much enthusiasm has surrounded Walz and they want to keep riding that. Maybe showing the contrast of her and Walz being "together" on the ticket while Trump and Vance campaign separately. Also maybe the party is still skeptical of running a woman of color so they need the old white guy to remain close at all times.

Whether ifs fair or not I think the “I don’t know what she stands for she won’t sit for interviews” take is getting traction. Complaining about how unfair the two entirely different standards for the candidates are isn’t going to win the election.
She’s got from now through the debate to address that and I think she can as long as she prioritizes it (and Trump doesn’t bail on the debate).
Also the Walz thing will sort itself out, if she lets him answer every question ya that’s bad, but I think he’s gonna be more of a prop than a crutch.
Harris wasn’t great in the 2020 debates but the giant format is really hard. She was in her element in more controlled settings like Senate hearings and I think a CNN interview or a debate with Trump will fine for her.
I think having more public appearances and interviews in controlled environments is very important prior to the debate. We don’t want the next big public event for her to be the debate where one bad performance loses her the election (like Biden).
I saw a Meet the Press interview of Vance that was filled with exaggerations and half truths, but to the untrained eye he came off seeming intelligent and capable. I’ve seen the same with Walz, only a lot more honest obviously.
Trump is showing up all over the place in interviews and videos with podcasters and streamers. There’s an hour long video of him playing a round of golf with Bryson Dechambeau that makes him seem relatable and normal. He’s almost didn’t mention politics once, it was just the two of them talking about golf and doing a scramble trying to break 50 from the red tees (they shot exactly 50). He did a long interview with Theo Von on his YouTube podcast.
Harris needs more exposure and can’t just ride the clout cloud until November

Literally every presidential candidate has done joint interviews with their VP candidate. Stop spreading MAGA BS propaganda. Democrats have zero reason to placate the MSM when they’ve been in the bag for a MAGA this entire time.
Communications 101: Don’t give the opponent control over the message delivery. Play your own messaging game.

A candidate’s first interview after a VP pick is always with the VP. McCain, Obama, Romney, Clinton, even Trump 2016 did it. It’s some misleading media bullshit to suggest it’s in any way odd. The only odd thing perhaps is that it took awhile (I’m not even sure if this is abnormal), but considering she wasn’t the nominee two months ago they’ve had plenty of bigger fish to fry.

While I do think she eventually will need to satisfy the legacy media and do more traditional interviews. I agree the only people really complaining about it now seem to be the media themselves and republicans who will continue to move the goalposts. Not only has she only been the candidate for 6 weeks but she had to sure up multiple reliable voting blocks for democrats whose numbers were in the tank when Biden was the nominee. By most accounts she has done that. She does the sit down with Walz alongside her tonight. Hopefully she has a successful debate and then you do something like a 60 minutes interview that airs the last week of September after a big NFL game. It makes/made no sense for her to do a bunch of sit-down press before she solidified her base support.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but i thought the first primary debate was the strongest part of her entire campaign in 2020 (not saying all that much I guess). She also did pretty well in the VP debate against Pence, although that's about as different an opponent as you can have from Trump in debate style.
some random articles from after each of those that I cherry picked to back up that memory:

She did great in the first one, especially in attacking Biden; then immediately backed off of her attacks and wasn’t particularly good again after.
One on one is very different though. Also I hate debates as a format. More of a sporting event than anything meaningful policy wise. Give me more town halls with real people asking questions.

I recall her doing very well at the first debate. I think it was the second or third (if she made it to three) that Tulsi Gabbard attacked her over her history as a DA and that pretty much killed all of her momentum.

Ya that sounds about right and now Gabbard is on the Trump team. I want nothing more than for Trump to attack her for being too tough as a prosecutor. That absolutely worked in the 2020 Democratic primary but in a 2024 general coming from a Republican that might just end it for Trump.

This is the epitome of a double standard.
Everyone demands that Kamala and Walz do substantive interviews with serious members of the MSM, yet Trump’s own appearances are all MAGA-adjacent, non-political fluff. If Kamala did a podcast with a faux-hillbilly interviewer where she and the host BS’d about using Cocaine and other recreational drugs, you and the MSM would be apoplectic…
And the last time Trump did a real appearance was at the NABJ conference. He was such a disaster that his staff pulled him from the stage 25 minutes early. It’s been MAGA-adjacent fluff and Fox News call-ins ever since. He won’t do anything substantive.

Republicans won't be satisfied unless Harris sat down with like Hannity or on the panel of "the Five" so Greg Gutfeld can rattle off shitty jokes to her face at her expense. They think that the "MSM" treats Trump unfairly so its only fair if they get their pound of flesh on Harris.
And Trump sitting down with Theo Von is good strategy for him just like it would be good strategy for Kamala to release more cooking videos with Mindy Kaling or whoever and for Walz to talk about gutters and getting your 11% rebate at Menards to some white dudes on tik tok. Candidates need to do whatever needs to be done to appeal to potential voters but lets not pretend that 90% of any of this is more than standard fluff. Nothing of note came from Trumps sit downs with Von or Dr Phil or whoever.
I don’t disagree with any of your takes on the media, but that MAGA propaganda works. If it looks like she’s avoiding the press, even for strategically beneficial reasons, they will spin in a way that will resonate with voters and hurt Harris. We’ve seen them do this time and time again.
I don't know about Harris interviews but I did just think of some media that the team should do everything in their power to get Walz on. College Gameday guest picker.
Unfortunately Georgia and Penn State don't have any potential hosting games before the election, but maybe Michigan vs USC week 4. Absolutely nobody would get offended when he picks against USC other than Ohio and that's a lost cause anyways. All the other top swing state schools have cupcakes against safely red or blue states so he wouldn't even need to do anything controversial.

ESPN would never go for that. Although it would be great because it would end with JD Vance going on Fox's Big Noon Saturday in response and making the cringiest quips to no laughter from Reggie Bush and Brady Quinn while he picks a winner for a matchup between Purdue and Wisconsin.

As the theory goes, there aren't really "undecided voters", just people undecided between one candidate and "not voting". This is anectdoal, but the VP choices have personally affected my parent's decisions.
Walz has made my mom go from "not voting" to "voting Harris/Walz"
Vance has made my dad go from "voting trump" to "not voting"
I could see things like the Arlington Cemetary story contributing to this theory but I guess we won't really know until the exit polls come out (and may never know!)

Very good points here Abe. This is the type of voting decision changes I've seen with my family a couple times in recent weeks too. Hopefully more people, who are somewhere in the middle, keep gravitating toward Harris/Walz or at the very least not voting for Trump.

Oh I do not expect my dad to vote for Harris no matter what happens, but choosing to not vote is his defacto "undecided" status. My mom saying she wasn't voting when Biden was the nominee, was her defacto "undecided" status. She wasn't going to vote for trump no matter what.
Conservatives becoming "undecideds" aka "stay homes" is fine by me and would help down ballot as well.
Trump was polling better than Biden, not because people were flipping from Biden to trump en masse. It's because people that would theoretically vote for a democrat were planning on not voting.

Seeing some really scary polling, lately. Not seeing a convention bounce for Harris, stronger showing in some swing states for Trump. I may have to go back into media blackout on this for a while. This country is certifiable and we are in deep trouble. The worse the guy looks, the more awful shit he does, the stronger his support gets, and it is absolutely breaking my brain. Really have to do some work to keep from getting depressed about this with 69 days left to go.

Not sure what polling some of y’all look at….
Fox News even came out with polling TODAY saying Harris is up in AZ, NV, NC and only down 1 in GA.
Blue wall states of WI and MI have consistently been showing 2-3 point leads for Harris too.
I have said this several times, but WI is going to surprise by not being particularly close. Believe me or not, but for Wisconsin, the die is cast. On election day, I’d be surprised if it’s not at least +4% for Harris / Walz
