The choice was four years ago. When you nominate a presidential candidate, you nominate them with an expectation that if they win, they’ll run again.
Biden hinted around a lot about being a one term transitional presidential candidate back in 2019, likely to get people afraid of his age over FOUR YEARS AGO to still vote for him. And he also made claims recently that he’s only running again because it’s against Trump.
I for sure fell for it. I held out a lot of hope that he’d win in 2020 and they’d spend those four years building up a replacement candidate to take his place. And it never happened and I’m pissed off about it.
We all voted in historical numbers for Biden in 2020 and it was all because we did not want trump elected again. It was a vote against trump and not a vote for Biden.
I’m not satisfied with the product I was promised and I want a refund. I don’t want a president who supports two wars, one of which is a genocide.
If you want to beat Trump, you really have two options here: 1. You have an inspiring and strong candidate who people are eager to follow and vote for. This is not Biden. 2. You hope you can win the same way you did in 2020 by assuming people will show up to vote against Trump. You need a safe pick who people generally are fine with and don’t have strong opinions about. Biden has terrible approval ratings. People have real reasons to not like the guy. This is not Biden

He really didn't. There was one report that rumored he had hinted to advisors (not to voters) about the possibility, and there was one public comment in March 2020 (after he'd essentially secured the nomination already) that he viewed himself as a bridge candidate. That's...it. He was nominated without ever suggesting to voters that he would be a one-term President, that idea just sort of sprung up and people for some reason took it as a promise. But he did repeatedly make clear that he felt it was his duty to oppose Trump.

If you voted as a vote against Trump, then you got exactly the product you were promised. You saying you'd wish you'd voted for Trump?

I'm assuming you did not watch the SOTU. Perhaps you should. It's better than getting your takes and info from TikTok.

I don’t use TikTok.
And you’re correct, I have not watched the SOTU. One speech does make a president a good president.
But based on the reviews I’ve seen about the speech, in particular from this same thread, is that people were pleasantly surprised that Biden seemed more energetic than normal (like he was on Adderall or a lot of caffeine), only flubbed his words a few times, and only seemed to lose his concentration a few times.
Is that the bar we should be holding for the president? He wasn’t as bad as we were expecting? He actually seemed like he had energy and focus? Based on that, what would inspire me to watch?
But I’ll commit to actually watching it this weekend and try to have an open mind. I’d LOVE if I could get excited for this guy. I really would. Not holding my breath

I agree one speech does not make a good President, but I do think it can remind you the ways in which he HAS been a good president. I wouldn't call him "more energetic than normal" - I'd simply call him energetic. He didn't flub more words than he used to; the guy has a speech impediment. And his ad libs in particular showed him both as a fighter and as someone with a sharp command of policy (here's the WaPo breakdown of all the ad libs, compared to the prepared text).
It wasn't perfect by any means, in particular his shitty use of "illegal" - but even there, he followed it up with exactly the point I want to see made, which is that citizens are the ones we should be more concerned about, not undocumented immigrants.
Ultimately he's been without question the most progressive president of our lifetime, and probably since FDR. The amount of positive change he's enacted despite the makeup of Congress and restrictions set by the Supreme Court is genuinely impressive. I don't see any issue with funding Ukraine's defense (it's a nice reversal of typical US foreign policy - helping a country defend itself from invaders instead of being the invader). Gaza is absolutely the biggest blight on his record for me, but at least he's finally breaking with the Israeli government starting to do something of value there (initiating airdrops of aid without even telling Israel; setting up a sea pier to circumvent Israel and deliver aid; sanctioning Israeli settlers, and soon, directly sanctioning Netanyahu's most extremist cabinet members).
And again: the alternative is Trump. Every single thing gets dramatically worse with Trump.
Biden isn't the strongest candidate, but the biggest challenge to defeating Trump is so many people are unwilling to examine the substance of the two candidates when it comes to policy and records as president. Maybe everyone shouldn't vote.

That and short memories
And propaganda from the Kremlin subtle enough they won’t even know.
You don't have to be excited or find an candidate inspiring to vote for them. Biden's neither of those but Brauns right he's been the most progressive Democratic President since LBJ and the other alternative is Trump. This isn't complicated.
If your brain can’t compute those binary options and you’re still looking for something else, stay home.
This isn’t difficult.
This. Yes, Biden is old, that's how time and longevity work. Trump is just three years and change younger, and is still the unqualified, lying, out of touch, egomaniacal dimwit wannabe dictator, with an embarrassing vocabulary and poor decision making, that he was in 2020 and in 2016. I wish we had a better candidate than Biden is at this point (from an electability standpoint), but the choice between the two is easy.
I was honestly a Biden fan before I learned about Barrack Obama, and supported him before 2008. I liked that he was a real foreign policy wonk and seemed to be an honest supporter of the common working person, as well as someone who understood that Washington functioned on compromises. He isn't my ideal candidate now, and he hasn't been a perfect president, but I can certainly live with him.
And again: the alternative is Trump. Every single thing gets dramatically worse with Trump.
We seem to be on the same page, and I agree with this statement. However, I'm around people every day who say they were better off, mainly because they made more money, during Trump's reign, or at least they think they did. Most of them are my colleagues in the bread distribution business though (and similar things), and what they conveniently forget is that their business only spiked in 2020 and 2021 because of COVID and how poorly our government mismanaged the crisis. Any effect Trump had was minimal or was due to his leadership failures. The so-called lockdown they still complain about meant people stopped eating out as much (due to closed restaurant dining rooms, many more people working from home, less time outside the home for entertainment, etc.), and demand for essential groceries went through the roof, all as supply chain breakdowns put upward pressure on prices.
Our costs have gone up the last couple years but that has been fully offset by price increases. I see things differently than the folks I work around, and we've clearly had different life experiences. I left the restaurant industry in 2020 just as it was getting pummeled (I'm MUCH better off now, as much as my peers may bitch), and they had mostly worked in direct store distribution for 5-10 years, and much longer for some of them. I also have a bachelor's degree and some graduate-level classes to my name, and I don't think I have regular contact with another graduate or even anyone who went to college at all, aside from a few top store managers with whom we really don't talk much. They value perceived freedom and simple language, and give the sitting president credit or blame for things they have little bearing on, while ignoring things they think don't impact them personally.
It's incredibly frustrating to deal with Trump fans who have a simplistic world view and don't seem to have any understanding of economics on a macro level, or even their own microeconomic situations. They like that "he speaks his mind," without understanding how twisted and faulty it is. They eat up the baseless and inconsistent rhetoric, with no concern for the harm it causes. They aren't concerned that he could make our nation an international pariah and further embolden our adversaries, and prioritize putting "America first," abandoning the world leadership position we occupy and ceding power to Russia and China. For God's sake, they still think we can just nuke our enemies without consequence and fire off missiles into Mexico to end fentanyl, and an expensive border wall will fix everything else.
I'm not sure how to wrap up this unintended rant so I'll just cut it off here. I've rambled enough, sorry. I guess my point is that, try as we might, reasonable and educated people can't argue with MAGA types because they simply aren't concerned with facts and truth. They're all around us, and they aren't bad people (mostly), but their understanding of the greater world is minimal, simplistic, and tainted by a modern conservative culture that embraces self gain through populism at all costs. I won't waste much time arguing with them. I guess we're better off trying to motivate reasonable folks by ignoring the BS and encouraging voter turnout, focusing on our successes, and promoting good, honest candidates. Most conservatives are selfish. They get saved, and act like they're better than everyone else. They get saved, and act like it's carte blanc to do whatever the hell they want.

Truly, we live in the absolute dumbest fucking timeline.
Honestly, going by the American public a Kennedy and a football star on the same ticket does make some sense. Like if you are reaching and have nothing of substance to offer you can be happy you have this going for you.
"Voted" in the primary today. Two other people besides me were there at 5:30. Pretty strange but this whole primary was a wash anyway.

Honestly bad news for Trump if Rodgers can splinter the "anti-pedo pedos" demographic. Will be tough to paint Rodgers as Soros funded unlike Haley and Desantis.
Not enough to win the election, but probably more than you think
Fair point. 70+ million voted for Trump in 2020. Land of the rubes. Home of the fucking idiots.
. Sure but Trump had some central ideas that stuck in people’s minds and got them invested. Most of it was pretty basic GOP bs that he ramped up. That and the carnival barking brought in the new crazies. Most regular GOP folks went along with it cause of self interest. Stupid or not it’s pretty logical where his votes came from.
Campaigns need some kind of key themes/slogans to stick in the public’s imaginations. Look at Ross Perot for a successful example. I don’t really see evidence RFK has really done that. He just seems like a joke whose platform is all over the place. He’ll be extremely lucky to do Jill Stein numbers at this point. It’s early so we will see how the Summer goes but I think he’s a fart in the wind.
