Yeah, that's why I wanted to make sure I mentioned that I don't know how actually connected it is or anything. Some on twitter were pointing out it's rich white people but not connected but then others saying they have ties and I have no clue the history or anything about it. Just disappointed to see Ellie Kemper sucked into something like this cuz I'm a big fan. First I think I've heard of this kind of pageant/group.
Yeah, I wouldn’t freak out just yet. It’s most likely just something her parents made her do. The 4th of July fair in downtown used to be called The VP fair. It’s one of those things that is unfortunately really baked into the culture of the city and many people participating don’t understand that they’re celebrating something bad. It’s kinda like celebrating Thanksgiving. Like, we’re celebrating ethnic cleansing to an extent but people don’t really fully understand it
I know a few people that are still a part of VP. It’s pretty common old money stuff. And frankly with how common that is amongst that crowd, I’d be surprised if she even knew how tied to the KKK that is. Even one of my most progressive friends went to the ball every year unknowing that it’s basically the remnants of the KKK
Yeah, there's shit like this in Memphis too. Weird antebellum debutante type shiz. I worked as a lifeguard at a country club in Memphis that hosted one of the balls (there were like, 5 in a 'season') and we always had to step in to help with catering/behind the scenes stuff. Bunch of old money, old people in tuxes and gowns and then a group of 18-19yo girls (and their dates) vying to be crowned princess. Everybody just got wasted. Kinda weird creepy shit.

Maybe it’s so not weird to me that I don’t see the problem with her being involved with it. They do Azalea Courts and Mardi Gras balls and whatever club events all the time. I was on the Azalea Court in Mccomb MS my senior year of high school. My aunt was a member of the Azalea Club. It’s all entirely white. The black seniors had a different court they were on. There are obvious problems with this, but they weren’t our problems as teenagers. It was all really pointless to us as 17 year olds. But if I was famous I’d get cancelled over this?

I think the issue is becoming a famous grown up and not learning this wasn't cool or denouncing it once it was unearthed.
I feel like NE/West Coast have a lot of these same dance/pageant things that are based in a lot of the same classist ideas that just don't have the geographical tie to deep seeded KKK things, but they're probably ideologically the same
She hasn't responded to this yet, has she? Isn't whether she's "cancelled" dependent on her response?
I was just researching that. It sounds like no. When it's come up in the past she's said something acknowledging coming from a very privileged background.

Living in Augusta it was common to see weird pedo-like shit with the Irish Travelers and the pageantry of their super young children. Also, witnessing honey boo boo at like 5 or 6 performing on top of a bar in statesboro during the height of her popularity was one of the stranger things I've seen in person. Still have no idea how the bar or her family thought this was remotely appropriate and even then what is there to be gained in terms of exposure from performing in front of a relatively small crowd of drunken college students at this point in her career. Sorry if this is off topic.

I must be really poor because I've never even heard of such a thing here lol.

Is that a realistic expectation though? Like if I was starting to hit my stride in Hollywood I don't think I would just randomly bring up an apparently specious connection to the KKK from when I was 19 just to then denounce it. Sounds like a lot of bad press with very little benefit.

It's come up to the point of us knowing about it, so addressing it now seems appropriate to me
Pretty good essay about 'cancel culture' that was sparked by the Ellie Kemper thing.
good read, thanks for sharing. i like the metaphor of the internet "flattening" people or turning them into a "brand". well i say the internet but really it's twitter.
quote from the article:
Hill’s piece is grounded in the notion that, even just a decade ago, it seemed ridiculous to think that we’d all hold digital ephemera against each other. We’d grow up, get used to the spaces we were in, and we’d extend some grace. When everyone has a vast digital past, there’s some mutually assured destruction at play, right? But that’s not how any of this has played out.
maybe it seems naive of me to say so now but i think we are getting to that place where we extend grace to people online. we certainly aren't there now, but there are enough voices calling for nuance about situations like this that i think we'll get there.
re: this specific controversy surrounding Kemper, it doesn't change my opinion of her. it's just some debutante type thing she did as a teenager, it certainly doesn't make me think she is a racist.

if you want to watch a fascinating documentary about weird old southern shit, I highly recommend the 2008 documentary "Order of Myths". it's about the history of Mardi Gras in Mobile, AL, an institution that is still basically segregated to this day. the filmmaker is from an "Old Mobile" family so she had full access to anyone and anywhere. she did a fantastic job.
it's an odd thing for me to watch because i know so many of the people or families in it. i'm not really a mardi gras fan but mobile is a small city.
It's a fine apology for me, she's not cancelled. But if someone doesn't want to work with her because of this, that's their right - that's not being cancelled.

I'm glad she said something and didn't make excuses, that's all we can really ask of people.
Is there reason to believe he intentionally exposed himself on camera? I don't know who this guy is and it's the first I'm hearing about it. But I imagine it'd be obvious if this was a mistake or not.
lol it seems he was intentionally masturbating during a work meeting which I guess only happens in work from home but for someone in journalism youd imagine there's a fair amount of remote interviewing and it's probably not ideal that if you aren't in a room with other people you might be jerking it during a call

He apparently made a mistake but it was literally during the work day on a work call with other coworkers. If I got caught doing what he did during a work call I'd be in deep shit. There shouldn't have even been the chance for this mistake to happen.
He also apparently has some other shitty/sketchy things in his past like fathering a child with younger woman who he then tried to deny and distance himself from until it was proven he was the dad:
Toobin had a longtime off-and-on extramarital affair with attorney Casey Greenfield,[22] who is the daughter of American television journalist and author Jeff Greenfield and the ex-wife of screenwriter Matt Manfredi.[23] They had a child in 2009, which Toobin initially resisted acknowledging.[21][24] Ultimately, Toobin's paternity was confirmed with a DNA test and a Manhattan Family Court judge ordered Toobin to pay child support.[22]
Apparently there's a rumor he went to a swingers club with Roger Stone which is just gross cuz....Roger stone.
It's more about "hey CNN....you could have brought in ANY legal analyst for what dumb question you ended up asking him after using most of the time as a platform to try and win back credibility".
The people these news networks routinely bring on to discuss shit sucks hard. Most are shitty people and a lot have gotten us into this mess we're in but now get to be paid to make snarky comments about it
