question for this thread, coming from a place of mild ignorance about the situation: are we, generally speaking, too hard on ellen degeneres for her scandal? reading the original buzzfeed article, it is clear to me her producers created a shitty work environment, and with her being the top dog at the show it was her responsibility to be aware of that. but it wasn't actually her engaging in the shitty comments and behavior, it was the people working for her. but whenever she comes up on social media, particularly reddit, the comments are so aggressive and vitriolic.
i guess what i'm getting at is if we found out say, Seth Meyers, or Stephen Colbert, aka white guys, had producers that created a toxic work environment, would be still be lambasting them at every opportunity four years later?
I think she's got a lizzo thing going on where it's just complete 180 from the image they're trying to project, which is that Ellen is all fun and nice. Seth Meyers vibe is funny news guy so it's not as big of a flip if he's an asshole/working with assholes.

I think Jimmy Fallon was accused of pretty much the same stuff as Ellen and I think people were mad at him for like a week and then moved on. So while I think it's a good thing Ellen was held accountable, it's pretty lame Jimmy wasn't held to the same standard.

Independent of that article about the producers and work environment I have read a ton of anecdotal and other stories a out her being a total asshole and nasty person who is nothing like her fluffy, dance-loving persona. So I just felt that the whole turning on Ellen was a long time coming in an industry where maybe she wronged too many little people along the way. But have definitely read from randos for a while that she is nothing like what her talk show persona is like and so I think that was more like karma coming to get her.
Fallon sucks too and deserves more criticism. Not for his comedic style but because there's also been stories for a while about him too and I wouldn't be surprised if more comes out in the future. I think maybe one key difference in it is Lorne Michaels is powerful and a close friend / investor in Fallon. Wouldn't surprise me if he was protecting Jimmy's reputation over the years.
I do think, like a lot of these things where we all "turn on" a celebrity, there are a lot of people who just jump on board and amplify or make worse the backlash. Like tons of people who just don't like Ellen or her comedy or her sexual orientation probably jumped right at the chance to tell everyone else how much they don't like her or always knew she was evil or something.
So maybe her backlash was a bit more because she's a gay woman. But I do think she had the professional backlash coming and sometimes pretending to be something your not for too long comes back to bite you. Probably got more hate than necessary but still problematic if what I've heard and read is remotely true

yes good point. and that's an even better comparison than Meyers or Colbert, because the vibe of Fallon's show is super goofy, silly, friendly, and easy going, so the toxic work environment claims are similarly contrasting to Ellen's.
furthermore, with reddit in particular, the reddit hivemind generally doesn't like jimmy fallon anyway, so i'd expect them to take the opportunity to really bash him. and they do, but again not at the level of ellen.

I don’t have a strong opinion about most of this, but I would actually be a little bit devastated if I found out that Seth Meyers was an asshole or was allowing his staff to create a shitty work environment. By all accounts, he’s a really nice guy, so hopefully, I can avoid such devastation.

Yeah, him and Colbert seem like good guys. Hope to never find out anything nasty about them.
I mostly take entertainers and athletes at face value and don’t really care much about their private lives. But when my son gets older and starts looking for role models (outside of the home) I’ll probably care more
The stuff that's come out about her is disappointing considering her scream queen status, but really not at all surprising. I mean her partner is Shia LaBeouf for crying out loud.

Every word of the Goth stuff could be true and I don't think it will hurt her career at all. Also thought all of these details were out there already, except maybe the part where he immediately wrote down what she said.
I just want to circle back real quick on toxic work environments in the film industry.
It's all toxic. Over demanding, stupid long and hard hours, big personalities and egos all competing and working towards a vision. I hate working on set. It's a lot and stressful.
And of course people aren't what they seem on TV. 🤷♀️ Ellen's hate continues more than Fallon because she's an easier target for ire to the public, for all the reasons itm listed.
Crazy to me that Jack Black would seemingly throw Kyle Gass under the bus and pretty much end Tenacious D over a comment that lots of us were already thinking anyway.

They postponed the tour dates as of now. They've been friends and partners so long I could see them agreeing to it. There are politicians and supporters backlashing there and I'm sure the headlines aren't making folks happy who may employ Jack in the future.
Basically saying that it's shitty and lame if he threw Kyle under the bus and there's actually bad blood about this but I wouldn't be surprised if Kyle understands that what he said got blown up and was cool with letting things die down.

I guess we'll see what the future holds for the D
Gass has made a statement apologizing. But Idk Black's statement just seemed very much like "I would never say these things or condone these things Idk why he would say that". Just feels very much like he is distancing himself to protect his image. Indefinitely halting all Tenacious D creative endeavors going forward just seems like a "dude you're my bro but I can't be associated with you anymore." Similar to Seth Rogen and James Franco. Guess we'll just have to see going forward.

idk the gap between Franco and rogen isnt nearly as big as the gap between Black and Gas. definitely a "don't fuck with my Mario money dude" move

Jack Black and Pharrell both strike me as kinda naive when it comes to world events and politics tbh. Which I don't blame them, there both rich as fuck artists.
They both also get to be in huge films and have pretty dope jobs in the arts industry.
Which is why I understand why they would have pro-zionist takes. That's who's signing they paychecks and they both strike me as people who are super positive and don't like to be in conflict.
So yeah it sucks that Pharrell and Jack did this but also I still think they are cool dudes. idk maybe I'm just coping bc I'm a big fan of both of em

you know what, screw what I just said above. They are grown ass men who have the $ and not give a shit about pissing off hollowood execs they should know better.
Virgil Abloh never did some dumbass shit like this and this is why Virgil will always be better then Pharell
This doesn’t seem to have gotten much coverage anywhere. The Tortoise Media podcast, where several of the allegations were first reported, apparently has some TERFy leanings. I think someone involved is Boris Johnson’s sister. Some have suggested they have a personal thing against him because of that.
The Am I Broken podcast, where one of the allegations was first reported, is apparently run by a non-binary person, though, so it don’t seem like there would be any particular reason to doubt their reporting. And with there being five different accounts spanning a pretty long span of time, this doesn’t look great.
