and as far as the talks above, a good example for me would be kanye. i've always loved him and even stood up for him until like the past two years when he tried to fuck with the election and started harassing kim.
wearing clothing that say things like white lives matter is scary and dangerous for Black people. he's not wearing a shirt that says "pineapple on pizza is awesome". it's actual, important issues and we allllll know the sad but huge influence celebs have.
Ugh I love these guys. So good. I've mostly avoided all the drama around "the try guys" thing because I had no clue who they even were. Like most Twitter drama I learn who "famous" people are after they get in trouble.
But I read a brief summary, didn't watch the try guys video about what happened but assume this is close to it. Everytime he went from sounding deeply serious to just dropping another "penis" line cracked me up
Yeah they're extremely good at figuring out whatever hyper-specific thing is happening in the zeitgeist to satirize that no one's done yet and then Levick in particular is very good at picking up on vocal tics and cadences the people he's imitating use to deliver sentences. It's really brilliant shit. Dylan Gelula and Broti Gupta are also great at this. And obviously Hayes and Sean.

That's what it is. Because for 15-30 second intervals it will sound authentic like a real explanation video that is all too common these days. But then it just reverts back to the dumbass joke about sucking his own penis and it kills me every time.
Eh, personally Roger's politics..to use his parlance...mean absolutely bollocks to me. Same as Kanye's don't. Same as whoever else's don't. I get annoyed when publications, people, and media try to use someone's beliefs as a weapon.
When I buy a ticket, all I care about is if the show is going to be good. But to each their own.
Kind of the opposite for me, at least when it comes to attending shows. Do I enjoy the Smiths, and.continue to do so? Yes. Will I buy a ticket to racist-ass Morrissey's gig? Nope. I did attend Roger Waters' show at MSG last month, but that was before I realized how around the bend he's gone and what an asshole he is about it - honestly, it leaves a really bad taste in my mouth and I likely wouldn't have gone if I'd known.
I dunno. I don't fuck with people who support fascism in my day-to-day life, so I don't really want to fuck with them in this way, either.
But see, you say he supports fascism. I feel like, that's a bit of a stretch. And that's a stretch a lot of people seem to be willing to make because he has complex ideologies that require a scalpel to dissect as opposed to a chainsaw. I don't agree with everything he has to say or think, but I can't say he directly supports fascists because Ive never seen him or read a quote where he's doing that. The way his reputation has been clouded, people just think the guy plays Comfortably Numb, sieg heils and storms off the stage in a panzer suit. And now that's the narrative that gets regurgitated.

My "supporting fascism" thing was more for the Kanyes and Morrisseys of the world. I understand some of what Roger Waters is getting at - the US doesn't have a lot of room to criticize given the atrocities we've both supported and directly perpetrated in our history. At the same time, when challenged during his CNN interview about China's ongoing genocide, he hand-waved it away. Blaming Russia's invasion of Ukraine *entirely* on NATO is ignoring what's actually going on in Russia - he says he's anti-propaganda, but that is literally all Putin allows on Russian TV any more. Why give that a pass?
To me, "supporting fascism" isn't just, like, voting Republican and going to white power rallies. It's also ignoring or forgiving it when it doesn't fit your personal narrative or interest (see: all the people who just voted for Trump because, to them, lower taxes were worth ignoring or forgiving demagoguery and racism). Roger Waters is interested in poking holes in the West's holier-than-thou facade, and I am down for that, but doing so doesn't mean that you have to act as if non-Western regimes acting in totalitarian ways isn't significant or a part of the picture, and that's what he's doing. It's gross.

Got ya. I agree that he does a lot of "handwaving" when confronted with criticizing the West, and Nato. But he did spend the majority of his life criticizing The Soviet Union through his art. When it comes to taking on Russia, China, Communism and Fascism he definitely did his time.
And on the point of Ukraine being to blame for the war, they are far from blameless. But this horror show that Russia has started in response to Nato creeping up on it is not good for anyone.
I was never a big Smiths guy. Although I definitely get the appeal. And I've never enjoyed Kanye's music either. But he has undeniable appeal as an artist and as a celebrity.
I am forever interested in artists poking holes in any regime that considers itself the end all be all of whatever. And I am all for listening to artists take on totalitarianism in any form. But I can't necessarily fault an artist for taking on one enemy, and not going for the throat on all fronts simultaneously. And I certainly won't discount him for it. He has strong, relatively educated opinions, and he has the right to voice them. And people should have the right to choose to listen, criticize, retort and respond. I'll never understand the mindset of de-platforming, or silencing anyone for anything.
Let the assholes talk loud so we know where they are, and teach people from a young age how to smell what's bullshit and what's not
Oh the show was great, but I'm not sure I would have bought a ticket after listening to that interview.
I went to the show and came away from it thinking that he is on the right side of things overall, despite clearly him being more anti establishment than I am
being famous is so wild, if he was a "normal" person doing these things and acting like this at work etc, he would definitely be in some sort of involuntary committed situation.

"If you're in favor of freedom of speech, that means you're in favor of speech precisely for views you despise. Otherwise you're not in favor of freedom of speech. There's two positions you can have on freedom of speech. Now you can decide which position you want."

Call me when Kanye gets arrested for being a bigot. Until then, this is a bullshit argument.

Ok, my bad. Then what was the point of posting that quote in this context?
The point of me posting that quote, was to point out that one either supports free speech, or they don’t and want certain speech censored.
Right, but...again, were you pointing that out in the context of Kanye West's anti-semitic remarks and the subsequent actions by Instagram and Twitter? Or, just as a random aside?
Also, not to be pedantic, but by pointing that out, you were, in fact, making an argument - the argument that "one either supports free speech, or they don’t and want certain speech censored."

The only reason I shared it, was to perhaps offer the perspective of someone who truly advocates for free speech, by quoting someone that did so in hopes that people who may feel like they have the moral authority to decide what speech is outside of that right to think on it.
