Over the last decade or so, there's been a plethora of actors, comedians, musicians, artists, athletes etc. I've admired who've been outed as terrible people. I hesitate to use the word "canceled" because a lot of the time they do bounce back, whether deserved or not.
In some instances I think it's easy to love the art, hate the artist. Personally I think it is easier to ignore with actors since they portray characters, alternate personalities on screen. The personality you are watching isn't that of the actual person who is doing the playing, so it's easy to block out. With musicians, I have a much harder time, I guess because of how personal the art is. I can maybe secretly keep listening, but I find that I can't help but think of how "so-and-so" did these really awful things. There's like a mental asterisk in my brain and then I just can't enjoy it like I used to, and overtime it's just phased out completely.
Really it just always sucks when a public figure you really admire gets revealed as an abuser. My brother went to Clemson and my dad became a die-hard Clemson fan, and to this day he is still in denial about the whole Deshaun Watson scandal. I know it is just a part of the grief in accepting that the person he cheered for for years turned out to be a horrendous villain.
I was never really an Arcade Fire fan, skipped their roo 2011 set for something like Primus or Bootsy Collins. This one isn't too bad for me, but I recall over the years how this board really adored Arcade Fire, even back in April during their Coachella set during the live-stream, tons of you guys were gushing about them.
After typing all this out, not even sure what my point is anymore, I guess just that I've noticed so many former "heroes" of mine over the years turning out to be scum, so for the Arcade Fire fans here, my heart goes out to you.

I think I’m actually the opposite. I have a harder time still enjoying Kevin Spacey’s work, for example, than Ryan Adams’s, for another example, because I can enjoy Ryan Adams without having to look at him. I won’t likely see Ryan Adams live again or listen/buy any of his new stuff, but much of his music has been so intertwined with my life that I will always still listen when it comes on. My daughter is named Caroline largely because of “Oh My Sweet Carolina” ferchrissake.
Where was I going with this?… Ah, yes. Right or wrong, assholes are easier for me to overlook if I don’t have to look at them.
Wonder if this had anything to do with Will leaving.
The bigger question could be why did it take Will so long to leave if that was the case. As its been mentioned and known to some extent that plenty of people knew in Montreal and New Orleans that Win was doing things. So like nobody else in the band didnt know? Why wouldnt somebody go to Win's brother of all people and tell him what was up.
Just don't be surprised when black people listen to R. Kelly.
No, I've never got side eyed for playing Ignition. #sarcasm
Or everyone that still thinks Chris Brown is god's gift to music. The other day he was even say he wants to know why he doesnt have a star on the walk of fame.
I read a Reddit discussion about his New Orleans trawling of bars in April or May (can't remember exactly when).
Yeah I think that was specifically about him frequently hitting up college bars and local shows and going after the youngest female patrons.
Super fucking weird that Regina appeared to be totally cool with this behavior too with their open marriage. If they were that open about shit, how did she NOT know he was being a major creep to young women? Most likely she was aware and fine with it, and that's almost just as awful.
As for the timing of all this, I'm sure there are a lot of people who are grateful they were able to lean about this BEFORE attending one of their upcoming shows.
Yah an open marriage should never include being a shitty creep to people who are vulnerable

...

Qft
I had been considering seeing AF at Mohegan, but removed it from my schedule. But I may still listen to Funeral / Neon Bible / Suburbs on occasion cause they're all good albums.

I was speaking to the idea of who we could predict this type of behavior from. I've had enough experience to know that people in power who are inclined to bad behavior capitalize on it and hurt others in the process. The sadness that comes from a beloved celebrity being exposed for predatory behavior is real, but I wanted to address that unfortunately people who have been famous for a good amount of time have can use that power to do whatever they want, regardless of ethics or compassion for someone else's experience.
It's up to all of us to have better standards and boundaries with our own friends and coworkers, and call out bad behavior and not excuse it simply because they also happen to be talented. People with that level of power have so much financial contingency riding on their art by the time they're 5, 10 years in, a lot of people accept their shitty choices because their career is connected to the shitty person's. And they protect these predators because of it.
I am the last to minimize this stuff. I'm saying I don't act surprised when someone in power / fame does something chronically bad, and at this point no one should. Is it cynical? Maybe. But I've been fooled enough. And I know stories that aren't even public info of famous people who've done awful things.
Also as people are saying, this was already an "open secret" via reddit. There shouldn't be any "open secrets". There should be consequences.
"Due to recent events, I feel that I clearly need to address some rumors and set the record straight. For the past several years I have engaged in the emotional, financial, verbal, and physical abuse of my wife and younger children. When I became paranoid that people were going to find out, I found ways to keep my wife and kids from work and school and created divisions with friends and family members."
"I became obsessed with control and used threats, manipulation, threats of self-harm and suicide, inflicted physical damage on people and their reputations, all to keep that control. When I knew my wife was going to leave I tried to convince her and others that I was crazy, seeing things, and that I did not know what I was doing. She tried to help me with therapy and psychiatrists. My lies and deceptions fell apart in front of the professionals. When my wife finally tried to leave, I stalked and harassed her day and night and caused her and our youngest to live in a constant state of fear."
"I have lied or told half-truths to so many people about so much of this that I can't keep track of them. I don't want to lie about any of this anymore. I love my wife to no end. She is the best person that I know. She is intensely honest, loving, and good to her core. This letter is a massive simplification of the irreparable damage I have caused and the unforgivable things that I've done to her and our kids."
"To say more in this public forum would not help anyone. As the truth has started to leak out there have been people who have tried to blame my wife for my abuse to give me an out and people who have spread ridiculous and damaging rumors about her. This is fucked. She deserves so much better. If you are adopting this mentality or spreading these rumors you need to fucking stop."

Does being talented go hand in hand with being a dick? If so, I'm glad I can't hold a tune.
Maybe in a roundabout way. Being talented and praised for that talent can sometimes lead to having a massive ego. And having a massive ego while holding a position of power won't ever end well for the ones on the receiving end, especially when keeping in mind the prevalence of sex and drugs in music scenes.
seems this open secret of win being an abuser in the scene is very similar to what happened with alexis of daughters. he was also known for being a shitbag but things didnt come to light until Lingua Ignota made detailed accusations
I wouldn't say most, but there's just no story/news behind "man in power, is actually just a chill dude" so all we ever hear/see is bad stuff
like we aren't hearing this about Will or Richard Reed Perry...yet..
It’s always the front man. No one is telling stories about a bassist or rhythm guitarist.
Wrong. I know a bassist who got kicked out of a band that's upward trajectory. Problem being too... it's like the last person you would think put themselves in the situation they did and now he has to handles the consequences of being drunk at the wrong time.

Speaking of open secrets, Drake is still out there fucking underage girls but has yet to face any real consequences for his actions. I wonder if that’s because he’s “too big” to get cancelled.

It seems like a lot more things slide in hip hop, unfortunately
For example, DaBaby definitely murdered two people and still has a career.
