All right day 2 done!! The best part of the day was early, I think I ended up seeing like half of the bands sang_xcx recommended lol. Meet Me at the Altar was very fun and they’ll be big with the younger fueled by ramen crowd, Seratones ripped and gave a unique stylistic jolt for the day, The Sounds are probably way too professional and dancey and Swedish to play riot fest but I’m glad they did, and I thought I wasn’t going to like Amigo the Devil but he was funny and quite charming.
Skipped Radkey to lay down and eat (wise choice), Fishbone was pretty good, Anti-Flag was a lot of fun, Living Colour were probably my favorite of the day, in spite of the fact they only played like five songs lol (also CM punk introduced their last song for some reason??). Thrice kind of sucked (sorry), Motion City Soundtrack were pretty good but they clearly do more singalong type songs and I would’ve enjoyed it more if I knew the words, Circle Jerks were great, and while he is a tremendous weirdo I have to admit Billy Corgan has written some great songs.
This fest is weird, there’s never a line to get in or to go through security or for water refills or at the bars but past 4 PM all the food lines are insane despite having a shitload of vendors. Oh well. Also, Harold’s chicken with fries and mild sauce is maybe the perfect festival meal.
Friend of mine witnessed a person fall onto the tracks on the Pink Line and get electrocuted. The station was way too packed. Fucking bullshit. And then no alternative for everyone trying to leave either because service stopped.

Jesus. I was waiting at California but left early to get a ride elsewhere and saw they weren't letting people in anymore and wasn't sure what was going on. The CTA wasn't running extra service (and it doesn't appear they will be!) which is just utterly stupid.
damn what the fuck is it with the border patrol turning away some of Canada's most beloved musicians away
Cause if you were just in the UK it still matters. I honestly want to know why those band members didnt come back early enough to be clear of the quarantine requirements.
I ended up getting here super early because my building is undergoing maintenance rn but I’ve come to an important realization about this year’s lineup: there are simply way too many punk bands of any stripe. I haven’t done an official count or anything, but I feel quite confident in saying there are more ska bands on this lineup than there are metal bands or any kind.
Edit: the number would be slightly bigger if FNM/Mr. Bungle stayed on but I think there’s currently only seven: Living Colour, GWAR, Body Count, Anthrax, The Ghost Inside, Slipknot, and Coheed if you’re feeling generous?
If I saw CM Punk introduce Living Colour I'd lose my shit
It was the highlight of my day yesterday. I'm a big living colour fan anyway but it was awesome. He was putting them over as the best in the world and then smiled and said, "now play my fucking song." He was at the aftershow too but just hung out upstairs.
All right, I need to clarify that my bitching about the lack of metal at the expense of everything else at this fest does not apply in any way to Big Freedia, an icon who should perform at any fest she chooses any given year in perpetuity.

BF opening for LCD is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen

Its supposed to be Warped Tour for Adults, so punk bands are gonna be a thing? And nothing wrong with ska either.

I genuinely try to be open minded and nice around here but here’s the thing about ska: almost all of it sucks a lot!!
I’m standing at the back of a Rancid set at the wishes of one of my best friends who’s a big Op Ivy fan. And actually, I’ve got (as usual) a lot of thoughts about all the bands I’ve seen today but I’m not complaining about the presence of punk bands at this festival doesn’t mean that I think, like, Bonnaroo had greater metal variety than this fucking hard rock fest does. Sorry if Rise Against gets their feelings hurt but it’s true!
I've sat on the train for a while and I've meditated on the issue and I've come to an important realization. 😌 Ska still sucks, supre is right that this festival is Warped Tour for Olds, and yet that doesn't change the fact that a solid 80-90% of the bands that demographic likes suck!
Anyway, time for the good: -Big Freedia: Her dancers have Olympic-level twerking skills. Even the best members of the audience who came on stage to show off their skills can't compete with that. -Les Savy Fav: I literally had no idea that live, Tim Harrington was basically like a hardcore Roisin Murphy. Like, how can you compete with a guy who steals a table and uses it to crowdsurf back to the stage? -Gogol Bordello: All you have to do is watch them for 15 seconds and be captivated. I've seen them before, but I really do forget how good this band is. -Vic Mensa: If you want a good argument for why rap acts should have live bands, here it is.
And the average (I'm not going to be mean): -Man on Man: Truly, the gays also deserve mediocre indie rock legacy bands, too. -Action/Adventure: I can't hate on them since they're local, but god... -The Bronx: ...it's good to have proof that hardcore bands can be a bit boring, too. -Best Coast: I really wanted to like them live, but it just paled in comparison to everything else. That being said, "When I'm With You" is an all-time banger, so it's all forgiven. -Rise Against: apologies to my city, but they're just so boring. -Rancid: apologies to my friends, but they're just so boring. -Run the Jewels: Their charisma continues to push them towards the spotlight and they've got better lights than ever before, but unfortunately, they're also promoting the still incredibly shitty RTJ4.
to be honest was expecting this day to be average so I can't be mad. But tomorrow I've got a bunch of bands I really like that so far have not be denied entry to the Socialist State of Illinois, so come back tomorrow if you want this asshole to radiate positivity or whatever.

well this is a take
I first listened to it in the hospital when I had COVID. I didn’t like it but thought it was probably because I was sick. I relistened to it again when I got better (and a couple times since) and yeah, no, sorry.
I’ll admit some of the songs sounded better live but the one song I like from the album (“JU$T”) didn’t? Idk.

Seen the the Bronx and el mariachi Bronx and prefered the latter. both were average though.
Rancid were great when they were drunk and I was drunk underage at warped tour.

Counterpoint: yesterday was awesome and almost everything we caught was super fun
Citizen: good start to the day but not super interesting Big Freedia: fun as hell Les Savy Fav: ridiculous as hell, way more than I was expecting Best Coast: way better/less boring than I was expecting, rocked surprisingly hard Gogol Bordello: we were to the left of the sound booth and sound was super muddy. Seen them before, was fun but it sounded like total garbage so we left and saw Mighty Mighty Bosstones: so fucking fun, we were right by the skanking pit behind the soundboard, band sounded great, everyone was having a good time even if every song sounds the same Rancid: also very fun, they played a bunch of hits and the crowd loved it Andrew WK (first two songs): he opened with the first two tracks from his new album. It was good but not what people expected, my wife hated it bc she wanted it to be more party, we were always only going to check out two songs and head over to Run The Jewels: damn these guys know how to kill it. Seen them like eight times now and they just keep getting better. RTJ rules, the new album rules, it kills live, what a set
Only saw three bands today (HEALTH > Body Count > Devo) but it was really fun. Probably wouldn’t pay for a ticket except for maybe MCR but I’d totally do this fest for free again
