Today was very good, easily best day of the fest for me. obviously I have no other opinions besides this.
are you pittin the knot
I was planning on it up until today when I realized that FLips ended 20 minutes before Slipknot started; leaving the festival has been so miserable that I just decided to get out of there early. Maybe some other day.

so, unbelievably, despite all my best efforts to complain and be a hater, I genuinely had a lot of fun at this festival. There were some definite lulls, especially yesterday, so of course I would've enjoyed it more if all those bands I like didn't drop out, but the highs more than made up for the lows.
Today: the rumors are true, Devo was fantastic; with them the energy level never drops below a 9 and how can anyone be mad with a setlist like this? I'm glad I made in time to catch garageland fav The Gories whose super-simplistic garage rock setup was very interesting and also very obviously a huge influence on The White Stripes; FACS continue to bring the heat as one of Chicago's best local bands (also, side note: kind of funny that today I saw Alianna Kalaba play bass in FACS and exactly seven days ago I saw her play drums in Cat Power); I was in high school when 3OH!3 was at their peak so of course I had to see them and it was delightfully trashy; the last time I saw HEALTH it was like six years ago after Jupiter Keyes had just left the band and then it seemed awkward without him but they've clearly found their footing as a 3-piece now; Body Count was good in spite of Ice-T's uhhhhh problematic comments on masculinity (also, his daughter is very cute); Bleached was a lot of fun and they had some impressive live whistling going on; and although Flaming Lips basically perform the same set at every concert they do, it was nice to get a reminder that it's still a hell of a set. And although I was curious to see Slipknot, what's more perfect than ending a festival with a "Do You Realize??" singalong?
As I've mentioned before, the festival is run great, it really feels like the CTA whiffed it way harder than usual with this, and in spite of my complaints I wasn't upset at all with how the weekend turned out. One of the joys of going to a festival is seeing bands that you're not as familiar with; sometimes you discover great things and sometimes you don't. I was bored by a few bands but also I discovered quite a few things that I really liked, and what else can you ask for? Overall favs: Patti Smith, Seratones, Señor Kino, The Sounds, Living Colour, Circle Jerks, Big Freedia, Les Say Fav, Gogogl Bordello, Vic Mensa, Devo, FLips.
Only saw three bands today (HEALTH > Body Count > Devo) but it was really fun. Probably wouldn’t pay for a ticket except for maybe MCR but I’d totally do this fest for free again
since you only saw three, how were they all? Who was your fav? Always wanted to go to Riot and MCR would sell me a ticket too unless I dish out for them playing closer

Glad you liked The Gories. I saw them get back together a few years ago to do Ultraglide In Black and was one of my favorite shows ever. I’d never make it a habit to travel to see them but if they were playing a festival set, it would be near the top of must see’s.
Sounds like a great Riot was had but honestly I don’t see how it couldn’t be. They have hiccups but nothing a beer or 5 won’t handle.
shuck tell me more about 3OH!3, I'm so curious. 30 minutes sounds like the perfect set length for them lol
I guess the first thing to note is that when I was relistening to them before this festival, my first thought was "wow a lot of these songs are way more misogynistic than I remember them being"; like can you imagine "Don't Trust Me" even being released, let alone becoming a top 10 hit today? But from where I was standing, the vast majority of the fans getting super excited and singing along to everything were all women, so what do I do know? (Also worth mentioning: this set was packed). I guess more importantly, 3OH!3 sort of rightfully understand their place as 1) kind of a silly group and 2) at least partially responsible for setting the groundwork for the hyperpop of today (they just put out a new album and the only new song they did was the one with 100 gecs) who are a bit older now and acted accordingly. Lots of running around on stage, lots of jokes, no slow songs. The band consists of the two guys plus a drummer and guitarist. They asked the audience to give it up for their drummer at least 4 separate times, which was kind of funny, but he was also incredibly good. I think above all else you were right - it was a perfect 30 minutes and it didn't need to be much more or less than that.
All right day 2 done!! The best part of the day was early, I think I ended up seeing like half of the bands sang_xcx recommended lol. Meet Me at the Altar was very fun and they’ll be big with the younger fueled by ramen crowd, Seratones ripped and gave a unique stylistic jolt for the day, The Sounds are probably way too professional and dancey and Swedish to play riot fest but I’m glad they did, and I thought I wasn’t going to like Amigo the Devil but he was funny and quite charming.
Skipped Radkey to lay down and eat (wise choice), Fishbone was pretty good, Anti-Flag was a lot of fun, Living Colour were probably my favorite of the day, in spite of the fact they only played like five songs lol (also CM punk introduced their last song for some reason??). Thrice kind of sucked (sorry), Motion City Soundtrack were pretty good but they clearly do more singalong type songs and I would’ve enjoyed it more if I knew the words, Circle Jerks were great, and while he is a tremendous weirdo I have to admit Billy Corgan has written some great songs.
This fest is weird, there’s never a line to get in or to go through security or for water refills or at the bars but past 4 PM all the food lines are insane despite having a shitload of vendors. Oh well. Also, Harold’s chicken with fries and mild sauce is maybe the perfect festival meal.
Awesome. Innocent. Until I'm proven guilty. Deny everything deny everything. I'm being framed. It's all a setup. Deny everything deny everything. I'm just a spoke in the wheel. A part of the puzzle. A part of the game. I'm being framed. \m/
All right, I need to clarify that my bitching about the lack of metal at the expense of everything else at this fest does not apply in any way to Big Freedia, an icon who should perform at any fest she chooses any given year in perpetuity.
What did y'all get - Azz Everywhere, Gin in My System, Go Duffy, etc?

2/3, no Duffy. Couple new songs in there too. Oh yeah and a couple covers of songs she was involved with like “Formation” and “Nice for What”

Devo was definitely the best. Really fun dance party, seemed like there was a nice mix of older and younger people there all enjoying themselves to some silly songs and costume changes. Kinda felt like something I'd use to believe Bonnaroo would book. They all looked like they were having a lot of fun up there and it seemed like the crowd was feeding off that. There were some funny moments where there were some circle most pits near me, for sure during Whip It and maybe the other was during Freedom of Choice? Don't exactly remember. I got a really good spot, but I'd be interested in seeing how many people were there when they started. They opened for Slipknot on the main stage.
Health was second best, I'd been wanting to see them for a minute. Was kind of late leaving my apartment in the afternoon so missed the first bit of their set but I'm really glad I was able to catch them at all. Wasn't expecting them to be so loud so early in the day, but it definitely wasn't a bad thing. Seemed like they had some equipment issues unfortunately, think they had to cut a song they wanted to play. Didn't have a large crowd, they were early on the main stage.
Last was Body Count. I told shuck I really only know Ice T as Law and Order SVU guy like the basic bitch I am, and I was only seeing them for the memes and I had nothing else going on at that time. Didn't take the set super seriously but it was better than I expected. They were also on the main stage, and we didn't really have any trouble getting a decent spot. Crowd wasn't empty but it definitely wasn't packed. Probably wouldn't go out of my way to see them lol.
I don't live close to Riot Fest so it's sort of annoying to get to via public transportation, and my girlfriend said ubers were $200 for an XL on Saturday after the fest so even splitting that with some friends isn't really ideal. And apparently they really didn't add more trains or busses so if you didn't leave early it sounds like you'd have to wait a minute. Was really easy to sneak in my alcohol though so that was nice. Sort of cool how they have all the rides and carnival shit for people to do if that's how you wanna spend your time. I didn't do anything but I like that others seemed to be enjoying it. I'd say this would be a really cool environment to see MCR for sure
Distance from the fest and lack of extra trains leaving probably makes this an attend one or two days each year from now on for me. I did already purchase a 3 day months ago for 2022 so i'll be at the MCR day at least for sure.

And speaking of body count, it was really jarring/refreshing to leave their set, where Ice-T kept saying dumb machismo bullshit about how the pit looked like pussies and ladies make sure your men have balls, halfway through to go over to fever 333, where when we arrived the frontman was talking about how it sucks that people who identify as women still don’t always feel safe at rock shows, shouting out all who identify as women and they want to change that and make the scene safer for them, etc

yeah I didn’t hate the actual performance but his comments were bad enough and then it was made sooooo much more jarring with him bringing out his daughter right at the end??

besides the whole "being decent humans" thing, how was Fever 333? They're the first act on the bill for a Slipknot show I have tickets to so I'm curious if it's worth showing up that early.

Lead singer tries to sound like Zach De La Rocha. Theyre pretty high energy, a solid opening act for the Slipknot show. If you can go early, do it, but if not dont sweat it.

the lineup is Fever>Code Orange>Killswitch>Slipknot. So I'd have to show up at like 6 pm lol
