I will never understand how people don't appreciate the sheer talent and musicianship of the Foos. Do they make generic rock songs to appeal to the masses? Yes. I get it if their songs don't appeal to you. But they lay it all out on stage every single time. How can they still be coming with that energy to every show 25+ years later? Fucking talent, that's how.

I'm going to be completely honest, I don't care how technically skilled a musician is or what kind of energy they bring to the stage if they can't channel that into making music that sounds good to my ears. Watching someone perform corny songs with high energy doesn't change the fact that the songs are corny. As fuck!

This might sound stupid but I'm always amazed that many people show up to Bonnaroo. Like that many people travelled and camped for the 2017 lineup?
pure speculation, but i think bonnaroo is just a right of passage for a lot of college-age social groups. i'd be curious how many attendees are one-timers, but i'd bet it's most attendees?

Whenever I see someone talk about how much “energy” a band has live I know their music is going to suck.
Janelle Monae will have the best performance on Friday anyways
This is a funny follow up because Janelle Monae is an incredible performer but her music is pretty corny too
She's really good live as you said, but I wonder how different her show will be from recent (last 3 or so years) performances many of us have seen live and on festival streams. I'll probably make it a point to go over there for at least part of the show provided there isn't a major conflict. Seems like she could either sub headline for the Foo Fighters or Megan (?).

Agree that "energy" is kind of a means-nothing word when applied to live music. Almost any music played loud over big ass speakers is going to have energy.
But there are more specific words you can use to capture the concept. The first time I saw Ministry a friend who'd seen them before said to get ready for a "relentless" show. That was an accurate description.

Say Twenty One Pilots without saying Twenty One Pilots.
I just think the Foo Fighters are unfairly shit on, that's all. If you watch Taylor Hawkins drum for 2+ hours, I think it would be hard to argue that he doesn't have talent.

But that's not what anyone is arguing. It's that the music they're playing for 2+ hours is simply not good to my ears, and that their whole vibe turns me off
For devoting so much of my time and energy to consuming live music, it’s amazing how big of a turn off it is for me when someone tries to sell me on a band because they have “so much energy” or “incredible showmanship”. I associate it with bands like The Struts and Imagine Dragons, who make shit music but I’m supposed to overlook that because they go on stage and jump around a little or the singer holds a high note while everybody cheers.
I’m personally a fan of Foo Fighters, but if I didn’t like their music I wouldn’t want to see them up there ~rocking out~ to it, I’d just be annoyed.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

On the other hand, there are performers like Vince Staples. He has really great music but basically no stage presence. Dude stands in one place for an hour and then peaces out.
Still have fun at his shows...but I would like a little more energy.
I have no strong opinions about the foos one way or the other but I like exactly two songs of theirs and I will probably be at that set with people who like them and sometimes that’s enough.
Actually I don’t feel too dissimilarly about, say, yaeji either. There’s not really a whole lot going on during her performances on stage, but when the songs are fun, the performer is having fun, and the audience is having fun, who gives a shit in the moment.

Not to go too far in the weeds, because your point would usually be correct. There are exceptions. I'd throw in stuff like Lightning Bolt or Black Pistol Fire who don't suck and put on amplified performances. Turnstyle and certain hardcore punk acts (who can actually play) would be exceptions as well though it might be open to interpretation whether or not someone thinks that music sucks. High impact Rap/HipHop could offer other exceptions (e.g. Denzel Curry - among others - who doesn't suck but is noted for his energy).
