On the other hand, there are performers like Vince Staples. He has really great music but basically no stage presence. Dude stands in one place for an hour and then peaces out.
Still have fun at his shows...but I would like a little more energy.
on the other other hand, there are performers like Scott Stapp who have both bad music and bad stage presence. i know it's past fashionable to shit on Creed but i saw them at a local festival at the height of their popularity and all Stapp did was walk to the monitor on stage right and put his left foot up on it, then walk to the monitor on stage left and put his left foot up on it, then repeat.

FOH with this Vince slander.
I'm a big Vince fan. Seen him 3 times. Dude probably walked 100 steps total on stage between those 3 performances. He definitely lets his backdrop/screens do the heavy lifting in the performance.
Energy, showmanship, charisma; it all matters. If I like two bands equally, I'm gonna get more out of the show that's more engaging. If you see live music only to listen to the music then talent might be the only consideration, but many go to be entertained, to just enjoy themselves and have a good time.
It's kinda like how two political candidates might have the exact same platform, but all else being equal the charismatic one is genuinely going to be the better candidate between the two because they're genuinely better able to get people to engage with them. Leadership skills are separate from policy-making skills but they're still part of the package.
The people on stage aren't just musicians, they're performers.

Dang, I saw him in Columbus after Summertime ‘06 dropped and had a blast at his show!
This is a funny follow up because Janelle Monae is an incredible performer but her music is pretty corny too
She's really good live as you said, but I wonder how different her show will be from recent (last 3 or so years) performances many of us have seen live and on festival streams. I'll probably make it a point to go over there for at least part of the show provided there isn't a major conflict. Seems like she could either sub headline for the Foo Fighters or Megan (?).
Yeah she would be a must-see for me with a new album. The Dirty Computer show at Coachella was amazing.

Janelle Monae incorporates elements of camp into her music and overall aesthetic, which is often associated with queer culture. Per wikipedia, "Camp art is related to—and often confused with—kitsch, and things with camp appeal may also be described as "cheesy" ". I don't think it's bigoted to point that out per se, I just think there's a huge distinction between intentionally incorporating these elements as an artistic choice and someone like Foo Fighters.
This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.
Is Janelle even that campy? There’s a few moments I can think of (eg basically all of “Yoga”, the occasional direct James Brown impersonation she sometimes does in concert), but I always saw her aesthetic as being way more inspired by Afrofuturism than anything else.
