I did my every so often social media check-in on my uncle who I unfollowed long ago. He's full anti-masker. I have never been less surprised by anything. My dad is as conservative as the day is long but even he knows to where one at social gatherings.

Ugh. My parents, who are actually pretty vehemently anti-Trump (I'd even call my mom fairly progressive) told me last night that they went to an outdoor gathering at which most people weren't wearing masks...and that they, themselves, didn't wear masks, there. I tried to explain to them in as calm a voice as I could why it was a bad idea, but I don't know how much of it landed.
Apparently, being dumb about masks isn't just a conservative thing.
Do you want to dance while also thinking about all the ways you've failed as a human?
UPCOMING SHOWS 6/8 and maybe 6/9 - Governors Ball 8/17 - King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard @ Forest Hills 9/4 - Pearl Jam @ MSG 9/7 - Pearl Jam @ Wells Fargo Center 9/11 - St. Vincent @ Brooklyn Paramount 9/19 - Stars @ Music Hall of Williamsburg 9/20 - Khruangbin @ Forest Hills
Agreed on it not being exclusively a conservative thing. The culture around masks is ridiculous. It’s always a “only when I am forced to” thing and never a “when I should” thing
The generational divide is so stark to me. Or at least within my circle it is. My grandparents live with my aunt, and my aunt's friend is traveling from Pittsburgh to her parent's place in Maine for a visit, and then is coming down to the eastern PA area and staying with my aunt and grandparents for a few days. And of course she tells me this while I'm calling to wish her a happy 78th birthday, so I felt like it wasn't the time to be like "Grandma that's stupid."
This is in contrast to my sister in California (early twenties) who is making her life partner quarantine in his room after coming back from the east coast, which he went to for his grandmother's funeral services. To be fair, there's a good chance his mother has COVID and he was staying with his family while here, but it still highlights just how seriously (or not seriously) the different generations are taking things.
Its all an extremely tough spot. Especially because the one event in these that is probably the "highest risk" is also the one that is easily the most justified and the one I would do as well which is the funeral. It just all sucks.

Planet Money did an excellent job explaining the behavioral economics behind people who won't wear masks. they relate it to past attempts to get individuals to do things that benefit the whole, like stopping drinking and driving.

Yep, my mom voted for Sanders in the primary and she’ll wear one, but she’s definitely not happy about it.

Driving through anywhere in Los Angeles, a very blue region with the most cases in the country, you will see sidewalk after sidewalk of maskless brunchers, all while the city refuses to lock down again and blames their problems on neighboring red counties like Orange and Ventura. So no, it is definitely not specifically a conservative issue, but a lot of deluded Democrats here choose to believe it is, which is hurting us.
That said, it does greatly justify my music tastes over the years that the dumbest people in this pandemic happen to love Smash Mouth and The Chainsmokers.

FWIW I don’t think these artists live off their “fans” in the sense someone like Bon Iver does. Most people seeing them are probably seeing them because of that one song from the radio. Like I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone wearing a Chainsmokers shirt and they are one of the biggest artists rn
EDIT to mention: Almost any pattern (except Zelda) are available in both the 6" and 5" sizes.
Vieux, I made my sister a diaper bag out of that zebra fabric. I had planned a trip up there in March, but we postponed it because of Covid, so it's just been sitting in my sewing room. I have a box it will fit in, but it's huge, so I don't really want to mail it because it's going to cost a fortune.

I have so much of that fabric, I bought it with my bestie that I started crafting masks with until the house was contaminated and fucked everything up including our friendship for a month. We are good again, but not crafting or quarantining together anymore. I personally LOVE that fabric. As you know, Zebras are my favorite. That diaper bag is a fucking dream. I love it so much.
Continuing the mask conversation. Bandanas are not as effective as a regular mask and neck gaiters are the worst and actually spread the virus. thejeremy was wearing one of those, I just sent him the article also. He will not be wearing that anymore, although he is currently negative for the virus.
EDIT: to mention that they tested a knit mask also.

Ventura County ain't red, homeboy. Especially compared to Orange County.
Well, crap. A girl who had been sick with something else last week came in this morning and told me she couldn't stay long because she had another doctor's appointment. Her sore throat and whatnot had been rpeviously attributed to strep, but now she can't smell or taste anything and feels worse. I told her to leave right away (and stay calm) and to let me know what she found out. Doc suspects coronavirus but they couldn't test her then and there, and said she was basically on her own for that. So I helped her find some options and she got it scheduled for tomorrow. She's young, reckless, and was just in California a couple weeks ago.
I worked with her three days last week before she called off. This isn't anything major yet, and I did work my ass off over the weekend, but I feel a little "off" and might be developing a sore throat. I scheduled a test for Wednesday, and I'm already off from work until next Monday. Looks like I'll be doing nothing outside the house this week, not that I have anywhere to go anyway. Was hoping to see my elderly mom and grandpa for the first time in a while but no way now.

Well fuck. Stay safe and let us know your results. <3
