David Wain and Michael Showalter wrote it, and I love them both. It’s interesting to me how so many members of The State went on to do so much funny stuff, and how many of them kept working with each other over and over in the last almost thirty years. If you go back and watch The State, they are all just babies.
Also, as far as rom coms go, I really enjoyed Showalter’s My Name is Doris. Sally Field being adorable playing against the guy who was Leo in Veronica Mars.
I also loved "My Name is Doris"!
i think i got this from listening to one of the episodes of WTF where Maron interview one of The State people, but I think for the people who watched The State while it was airing it seems like a much bigger deal then it actually was. like i don't think it translated at all to the next generation, it didn't become sketch comedy canon like SNL or Kids In The Hall, and even at the time it wasn't nearly as big a deal as later sketch shows like Portlandia or (obviously) Chappelle's Show. but for me it was a big stepping stone in my appreciation of sketch.
but as you say, what you can't deny is how long a vast majority of the cast has continued to work in comedy, and how frequently they still work together on various projects. i would bet the most financially successful out of all of them is Joe Lo Truglio? i think he's the only one on a long-running network show. also he was early twenties on The State, and he's 49 now! he definitely has a youthful face.
i'm always excited when i see anyone from The State pop up on anything, but I think I get the most excited for Ken Marino. i don't think he's ever been in anything that isn't excellent.
and the david wain episode of r u talking rem re me is the funniest episode out of that whole podcast series, imo.
Yeah, the State is pretty significant in my mind, but I definitely agree that it really didn't make the same cultural mark that other sketch shows have. And I’ll admit that watching it years later, a number of the sketches don’t hold up at all, but I’ll always have a place in my heart for fully grown sea monkeys and Robert Ben Grant putting bacon in his shorts.
Of course, it should all be taken with a grain of salt, but if you google them and their net worths, I think Robert Ben Garant is actually the most financially successful with Thomas Lennon in second, which I imagine is because they wrote all of the Night at the Museum movies, along with a handful of other less successful but arguably notable things like Herbie Fully Loaded.
And agree on Ken Marino, which relates back to my drunken TV thread posts the other night and how everyone should watch Party Down.
A lot of my favorite movies have some parts that did not age well. I love Valley Girl and Say Anything... for example but both films hang on the male lead not accepting a dumping. My favorite film of all time, The Philadelphia Story, is another problematic romantic comedy that opens with Cary Grant pushing Katherine Hepburn to the ground by her face.
One of my favorite holiday movies growing up features a scene in blackface singing Lincoln's praises for freeing the slaves. I mean... I'm not putting that on while the family is decorating cookies!

anyone who hasn't seen Party Down should not be allowed to post in General Television Discussion.
my other low key Ken Marino recommendation is Burning Love. it was on E, i don't even know where you can watch it now, maybe Hulu? i think that one also had lots of The State in it, definitely Michael Ian Black. also some of my favorite performances from June Diane Raphael and Ryan Hansen.

The only place I can find it is on Apple TV+ for $2.99 per episode. 😢

it's pretty janky quality-wise, but here's a playlist i found on youtube
I'm also a big Ken Marino fan. I loved his demon character on Reaper, and Children's Hospital is another great comedy ensemble he's in.
Side note: Love Actually is actually a really terrible movie.

so for real story, when i saw Love, Actually it was the day after i'd been up all night on a particularly intense acid trip. i hadn't slept and ended up at my parents house and it came on HBO and i watched it and cried and cried. so i'm probably not the the most objective critic.

i feel like i've been telling a lot of drug stories lately. for anyone new to inforoo popping in this thread for the coronavirus scoops i've been sober 15 years. so i'm not saying it's cool to watch "Love, Actually" after staying up all night dosed to the gills. not saying it's not cool either, just wanted to give you context that i haven't always made the wisest decisions when it comes to drugs.

Nothing quite like the eldest's high school moving senior night to September 4th to say that the school admin doesn't believe they'll play the full season.
One of my coworkers hit a 102-degree fever today, and her kids were all sick last night. She hasn't been around us since last Monday and neither I nor my other three coworkers have symptoms so those are good things, but my health insurance kicks in in 8 days so if COVID's gonna kick my ass I need it to wait just a little bit longer.

We recently rewatched all of the Wet Hot American Summer saga. It’s just so perfectly silly.
The first time I watched Wet Hot American Summer I didn't know what I was in for. I knew some of the people from other comedies and TV but wasn't fully aware of The State as a comedy group (though I'm sure I saw episodes of the show before that) and it was one of those movies that I just happened to catch on TV from the start and thought it was a straight up camp movie. By the time they got to the montage of going into town and robbing the old lady and shooting heroin and shit I was like "WHAT IS THIS?" and loved it. I've seen it so many times but want to re-watch the series as they are fantastic but I feel like I already forgot so much.

Do you know the one in Silver Streak? It's cringe worthy but in a poignant yet silly, Richard Pryor-approved way (which doesn't make it okay, of course).

I was talking to my dad last night. As parents do, he asked if I was seeing anyone. I had to remind him that a pandemic is not really the best time to be meeting new people in public places.

Counterpoint: someone out there's lonely and bored too.

The British Columbia CDC’s official recommendations include doggy style, glory holes, no kissing, and keeping masks on during sex... kinky.
Of course, you might not want to discuss all that with the old man, but he lived through the ‘60s and ‘70s. Nothing earth shattering, I’m sure.

And there's that whole N95 breath play thing...
This is not where I thought this conversation would go... but

You need some masks (they can be kinky) with a filter pocket? I have a hookup.

If you find kink fabric, you just broke the marketplace. Would sell instantly.
