My boss thinks that his 45 year old nephew had a stroke because of the vaccine. It was 2 weeks after he got it.
One of our married couple friends had their new born die of SIDs a week ago. These were pretty close friends to my GF, they went to hangout 14-16 with us.
First thing her mom asks. "OMG DID SHE HAVE THAT SHOT". I've never erupted on anyone in her family like I did then, she hasn't mentioned it since.
How was everyone else's Thanksgiving?
My dad called a week before and invited him and his wife over so I had to actually cook Thanksgiving. But it was small and just the 6 of us and they left pretty early. Then my niece and her hubby came over and we played games all night. So it wasn't bad at all. Oh and I even got in an early morning turkey day skate with friends.
Y’all are nicer than me bc I refuse to hang out with unvaccinated people. 😂 Luckily all my family is, but I have definitely stopped interacting with certain friends. 🤷🏻♀️

I mean, I don't interact with my dad in person anymore, really.
so on Tuesday I got my booster around 10AM; I came home from work and about an hour later after eating dinner I started feeling tired so I took a nap. I woke up feverish with chills and incredibly nauseous. I tried taking one of the Zofrans I had left over but that did not stop the same old absurdly intense GI symptoms overnight. Thank god I also had prescription strength Ibuprofen left as well, that helped with the fever but I still slept really badly and kept having intense fever dreams. Luckily, on Wednesday morning I was pretty much immediately able to keep light food down and by the evening was feeling pretty much back to normal with some very minor aches and fatigue. So, about on par with my first dose of the initial vaccine.
But! The weird thing that I haven't experienced before is now it's been 5 days and my arm still hurts. Anybody having a similar experience?

Define how your arm is hurting. I can still tell where the injection was if I touch the area, but it doesn't actively hurt as I'm just walking around.

Hurts if I touch the area, still residual soreness if I move it, especially if I rotate it.

It's been a COVID whirlwind the past week for me. I know two friends go to the ER with COVID. One was fully vaxxd AND had previous infection. The other was unvaxxd (unbeknownst to me). Plus about half dozen other friends unrelated to either come down with it.
I'm really curious if there is a noticeable impact in the number of Republicans vs Democrats due to Covid death come the 2024 election, especially in these states that are aggressively trying to pretend that it doesn't exist/there's nothing that can be done to prevent it.

The first preprint is out of a neutralization assay for Omicron utilizing Pfizer-vaccinated sera.
It's...very not great, but also not necessarily catastrophic. Reduction in neutralization was large, but incomplete (meaning the variant is "immune evasive," not "immune escape"). There was, on average, approximately (if I'm reading this right) a 41-fold decrease in neutralization vs. original type (against which the vaccine was developed). By comparison, Beta had a 8.8-fold drop, and Delta a 3.9-fold drop.
Some complicating factors, here:
1) The vaccinated sera was from individuals having received two doses. Boosters weren't factored for in the study. 2) Neutralization was significantly better, and the decrease in neutralization significantly less, for those with hybrid immunity - previous infection plus vaccination. 3) Obviously, this only tells a small slice of the story. As mentioned, Delta actually was less immune evasive than Beta, but out-competed it due to its advantages in transmissibility. But, of course, this also doesn't take into account cellular immunity, which is what would drive prevention of severe disease and death, which should theoretically be more robust (and which would account for the reports of "less severe" infection from Omicron). 4) This was a VERY small sampling - 12 participants, 6 in the vaccine-only arm and 6 in the hybrid arm.
So, yeah. Not the best news in terms of vaccine efficacy against infection. The big question I have is whether this big a hit to NAbs would trigger the deployment of a variant-specific booster, or whether we'd stick with the original formula as long as the vaccines continued to be partially effective against symptomatic disease and to hold up well against severe disease.

Will be interesting to see what booster numbers look like. Bases on past data I imagine boosted should be closer to hybrid immunity than just initial vax. Will also be interesting to see how this actually translates to vaccine effectiveness.
Anyone know how immunity compares between someone who's recently boosted (with second shot more than six months prior to booster) vs someone who isn't boosted but got their second shot more recently, like one to three months ago?

I think it at least partially depends on which shots in what order, but my current understanding is that Nab titers post-booster exceed those generated by the original two-dose regimen.

just scheduled my booster. what a difference between scheduling my first shot last march. first shot was like trying to get an adele ticket, booster shot was like buying a styx ticket. had my choice of venues and vaccine manufacturers. i was plugging in various CVS locations to google maps, got to choose the location that was 3 minutes closer to me.
i was kind've in the "do i really need a booster" camp, but the recent preliminary results on the pfizer shot and omicron, plus that i might be at MSG in a few weeks, pushed me to get it.
got my pfizer booster saturday. was conveniently at a CVS on the same block as the local ice cream place, so i was able to get a double scoop of vanilla chocolate chip in a waffle cone afterwards. i also got ice cream after my other two shots, and i haven't gotten covid yet. i think the ice cream helps you not get covid.
zero side effects this time other than arm pain, which lasted into the next day.
even if you didn't get ice cream immediately after your shot IMO it's still a good idea to go to some ice cream now. we're all in this together help stop the spread. if you don't get ice cream and end up with covid it's your own damn fault.

California will reimpose indoor mask mandates in public settings for all residents, regardless of vaccination status, starting Wednesday until Jan. 15, Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly announced Monday.
The news comes shortly after the fast-spreading omicron variant of the coronavirus arrived in the state, with 18 cases reported statewide as of Friday.
The state will also require people attending mega-events of 1,000 people or more that don’t require vaccination to show proof of a negative test taken within one day for an antigen test, and within two days for a PCR test. The previous window was 72 hours.
I'm sure I'll get it before the end of the year. I just think they are probably overstating the urgency for a booster for those healthy 18-40 YO's.
It depends what your goal is. If your goal is to not be hospitalized or die, you're probably OK for a while. If your goal is to not get infected and/or spread the disease, you should get boosted as soon as you can.
yea get boosted trust me u dont want the long term taste alteration
Was waffling on the booster a couple weeks back mostly out of procrastination and not knowing if it was really necessary, but wanted you both to know that these two posts are what convinced me to schedule it. Spreading a potentially deadly disease is bad and also don't fuck with my food.
Just got back from my shot; hopefully the side effects aren't too bad.

Yea, I ended up getting mine last week anyway. I saw the omicron crap as writing on the wall it's going to be needed one way or the other.
