Just before I left my position on the Covid team at the Health Department, on Friday, we got guidance sent out for suspected monkey pox infections. If anything, at least I feel like people are more on their toes with this outbreak so maybe we might have learned a little something?
My mom was planning a family gathering to celebrate her and her husband's birthdays over the holiday weekend. Last week, she got a ceiling fan installed at her house to increase air flow in an effort to reduce the chance of covid spread. Several days later, she and her husband tested positive and she thinks it was from the workers installing the ceiling fan. So it's ironic that her effort to reduce the chance of covid may have led to her getting covid, but also dumb that she and her husband didn't make the workers mask, or mask themselves. Whenever we've had workers in our house, I always make sure everyone is masked.

My best friend who passed got it from people remodeling their living room (pre-vaccine, unfortunately, ugh).
I have a positive to recovering roommate who happens to own a farm upstate and could just leave for two weeks. but it's their 3rd case. Being a teacher is the fucking worst in a metro center.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

Also, my blood pressure has been intermittently high since I had COVID in 2020, in spite of regular exercise and weight loss. I am afraid I may have to go on meds. I don't post-salt my food and rarely eat canned goods or frozen processed stuff. But I have been eating out at least once a week for a while now because I'm being lazy. Going to try cutting that out first and then go from there. Every single person in my family is on BP meds, including my two younger brothers, and have been for awhile. I think my brother was like 29 when he first had to start. I am the only one who has managed to keep things in check. This will be a huge huge boo for me if I can't get this under control.
EDIT: Just took it because I can feel it when it is up. 145/93. fuck. COVID CAN GO LICK ASS.

145/93, not good. Get in to see your Doctor. You know the drill, start with Hctz. Then throw in some lisinipril. Maybe you will only have to be on it for awhile until this COVID mess quits messing with your system.

I've heard going to Bonnaroo cures blood pressure-related post-COVID sequelae.
Shot #4 is inside me. We’ll see if Moderna is kinder to me than Pfizer was.
Did any recent info come out about the 2nd booster? I know it's been said it provides some temporary protection but the recent variants may bypass it. I haven't gotten it yet because there hasn't been any talk about it at all.
about a week and a half out from my initial positive test and a lot of my symptoms have cleared up (no more sore throat, stuffy nose/sinuses). however, i have had a horrible headache every single day. feels like a migraine in that i'm also super sensitive to light and sound and feel brain foggy/spaced out a lot of the time. hoping this doesn't last much longer, but feels like the general blah feeling is just liiiingering.

It’s definitely not as effective at preventing infection vs the Omicron family of variants. They’re not totally evasive, but yeah, sterilizing immunity is more or less out the window. I believe protection vs. severe disease does wane over time, though, and is re-upped/maintained by continued boosters even though they’re of the ancestral strain. That’s my current understanding.

I have j&j and got a Moderna booster two weeks ago. I feel invincible?

This is, I should add, part of the full-court press that is Operation Don't Bring COVID Home From Bonnaroo: Booster two weeks out, iota-carrageenan nasal spray every 4 hours while at the festival, two different throat gargle solutions I'll be using the active ingredients of which have demonstrated some effectiveness vs. the virus, twice-daily sinus rinse with salinated water and budesonide, and a 20-pack each of N95 and KN95 masks I'll be bringing with me for any indoor settings and crowd situations.
We'll see how it goes. It may be pointless given how contagious this thing is now and the environment I'll be in, but if the ship's going under, I'm riding it down throwing buckets overboard.

This cracked me up, and has been my sentiment all along.

Finally got COVID. Mild symptoms and honestly it just feels like a terrible allergy season for me. Surprised it took so long seeing as I've been working in a public setting (grocery store) the entire pandemic.
Really glad I'm vaxxed and boosted. Symptoms could be much worse.

Glad you're not feeling too poorly, hope it stays that way and you get some paid time off for it lol.

Fourth shot report: Moderna didn’t give me the chills, but I still feel like crap - headache and body aches, mostly, and the shoulder where I got the shot *kills*. Go, immune system.

According to UCSF epidemiologist Dr. Monica Gandhi, the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines each address different parts of the spike protein, so if you've had only one of the two vaccines to date, it's good to boost with the other.
I had three Moderna shots in 2021 and will be getting Pfizer in early July.

Yah I’m gonna get mine soon I think. I’m the opposite of you in terms of combo.
Irony of ironies...between the time concerts started up again last year until now, I skipped a half dozen of my favorite artists when they played in my town, and some other interesting shows, too, and it broke my heart.
But, knowing that the risk of outdoor transmission is very small, I went to Boston Calling this past weekend (on Friday and Sunday, anyway, since the weather was horrible on Sat and The Strokes and King Gizzard both cancelled due to COVID cases in the bands). I had my trusty N95 mask down around my neck and I covered up securely every time I used a porta-potty. I made sure that I didn't get too close to throngs of people near the stage, generally hanging in back or off to the side.
So, long story short, I had a few COVID symptoms yesterday and I tested positive with a home test.
The good news is that after 24 hours, my temperature has been dropping significantly and the sinus headache from Hell has just about disappeared completely.
Thankfully, three Moderna shots in 2021 and whatever immunity remains from an OG case of COVID in Jan/Feb 2020 may get me through this quickly and easily.
I can't say that I caught it at Boston Calling. I could just as easily have picked it up on a bus ride or at the grocery store. But it is ironic that I wound up catching it in close proximity to attending an outdoor music event, after skipping every indoor show of interest for the last 10 months. (Also, case numbers have been plummeting in the northeast lately, after we were hit first with the latest Omicron variants. Yet, the broader trends are always less important than what's happening right now to you and the people you care about).

Glad to hear you’re already feeling better! Question shoot what you ended with - do you mask up at the grocery store & bus? If so, it’s unlikely you got it there.

I mask with fitted N95s *everywhere*, including public transportation, retail stores, and the common hallways in my apartment building. I also use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer religiously. I touch a doorknob? I then sanitize before touching anything else.
My long shot theory is that because I live in an old building, there can be slight drafts between units. A couple of times per week, I catch a whiff of my upstairs neighbor's perfume in my apartment. I can't help wonder if something vented in that way.

I guess it’s possible you got it at BC then - maybe someone sneezed by you and you didn’t realize? So sorry you finally got got. You feelin any better?

I suppose that I'm feeling better. From a high temp above 101 on Wed, I'm now back down to my usual 97 point something, and the terrible sinus headache I had on Wed was completely gone by Thurs night. But I had COVID very early in 2020, and I felt like I had a run of the mill cold for a week, and then I had a week and a half of bronchitis, pneumonia, shortness of breath, and pressure on my chest. Apparently, regardless of the variant, it's starts mild for a lot of people and then goes away or it turns much worse. I'll breathe a literal and figurative sign of relief if I make it to the end of next weekend, past that 5-10 day period since symptoms appeared, without it getting really bad.

Last day of quarantine! Probably back to 90% but I can tell I'm going to have a dry cough for a long time. Had the same cough when I had pneumonia a few years back.
Day 7 today, and I'm feeling pretty good. It's downgraded to feeling like a mild cold. But...I tested for the first time since last week on Monday and it's still positive. (Apparently, the lightness/darkness of that red line indicates viral load, and my red line was very solid). I found a medical study which showed that Omicron viral load usually peaks around days 6 & 7 and drops significantly around days 10 - 13. It's fine with the CDC if I break quarantine now, but I've got two concerns - increasing my own viral load by being in indoor public spaces while still infected and/or making other people sick. Since viral load corresponds to severity of illness, I'm staying in quarantine until I test negative, by which time, my Omicron-specific antibodies and B cells should be kicking serious backside. (FWIW, my temperature has been normal since Saturday).
