My best friend got the new booster on 9/21 and tested positive today. She got exposed on Saturday. The "it takes 2 weeks before the booster is effective" window is real, y'all.
This shit is for real. I know three people that all tested positive within days of getting the booster/vaccine.

Between my last bout and the monkeypox vaccine, I can't get it til the end of the month, and that means I'm not really immune until after Halloweekend (one of my busiest times of work). I have a feeling I screwed myself here.

I mean...you could get the booster, wait two weeks, and get it immediately. Even if your exposure is to BA.5, specifically (which is definitely not a certainty given that there are several circulating subvariants out there), immunity won't necessarily be sterilizing. At this point, viral replication is too fast, viral load is too high, and IM vaccines don't generate super-potent mucosal immunity.
It's still the best protection you can get, of course, but I don't think anyone should have the expectation that they're necessarily shielded from infection by the booster.
FWIW, I saw my primary care physician yesterday to deal with a range of issues and discussed what happened with my three Moderna shots last year -- I had only the expected side effects which passed quickly with the first two shots, but had an irregular heartbeat and tightness in my chest occasionally for 2-3 weeks after my November booster.
I told him that I wanted to get an Omicron-specific booster, but was concerned due to what happened last time. He said that due to a few factors -- my having had an Omicron infection in June, three Moderna shots last year, the lack of severity of Omicron compared to previous variants, and new vaccines on the way -- that I could hold off for now, but should get a booster if a new, more serious variant emerges.
I really hope that Covaxin is approved for use in the U.S. soon. It's an old school, inactive virus-based vaccine just like most flu shots, and because it's based upon the whole virus and not just the spike protein, it's designed to work more effectively against all current and future variants, because mutations to the spike protein won't hinder it's effectiveness.
My MD is worthless so I'm interested in this since I had Covid in June. I think I'm going to get my flu and hold on booster for now.
Dr. Monica Gandhi advises waiting 4-6 months for a booster after a Covid infection. If I hadn't had the heart stuff, I'd definitely be getting mine before the end of the year, but given my experience a year ago, holding off for now seems like a wise idea for me (although anyone who hasn't had this sort of thing should, by all means, get both boosters.)

Working at New York Comic Con last weekend, I spent four days in a small, poorly-ventilated room with a crew of 7 people. We wrapped on Sunday. As of today (the following Saturday), only two of us have not come down with/tested positive for COVID. I wore an N95 mask the entire time, and the other so-far-negative person wore a KN95. We were the only two who masked religiously through the entire con.
I don't want to spike the football too early because I know incubation periods *can*, technically, be longer than a week, but, at least so far, it does appear that being stubborn about masking may have saved my ass, here. Fingers crossed it holds up.

MASKS WORK!
Also I was at comic con Saturday! Did you see all the great cosplay? Sooooo impressive. I died. We did a very lazy chill HQ / Poison Ivy cosplay that no one cared about but rightfully so
Decided to switch it up and got the Pfizer booster on Tuesday - no side effects, thankfully, though the jab was a little jabbier than it needed to be in my opinion to my arm was sore for like 5 minutes immediately after, but that was about it.

I also got my first Pfizer booster Tuesday, after four Moderna shots. While the Moderna shots always knocked me down for a few hours the next day, Pfizer gave me no side effects, either. My arm was even a lot less sore the next day compared to Moderna.

Having now waited for my turn to get a booster at this Walgreens for almost an hour, I miss the time when we’d all get the shot from 18 year olds in the army reserves.

I had to wait about an hour at CVS a few weeks ago and I made an appointment.

Yikes. Got it yet?
Edit-the only reason I didn’t have to wait was the pharmacist was a friend. I pulled professional curtesy.

We all had appointments. They were really short staffed (shocker). I tried to thank the pharmacist and acknowledge it wasn’t her fault we’re all waiting and she said “Thanks. No one ever says that.” :-(

I got it! Hope I don’t get the side effects - first time caller for moderna.

Literally waited an hour after my appointment at walgreens for mine, too. I finally had to just ask if I should reschedule because I had to pick up my kid.
I wonder why they aren't dispersing more doses to medical facilities and still relying so heavily on pharmacies?

The funding for anything related to Covid has vanished. It’s “over”. There’s not even any signage or advertisements to get the new booster here in New York. Most people who still care don’t even know it’s available. It’s a mess.

Absolutely shameful. Especially considering how little we know about long covid and the long lasting effects of anything covid-related. I'm still not even clear on when I can get my 5 year old new-boosted as I keep seeing conflicting info from government websites lol.

Eric Adams directly took away the funding.
I did the last (I think un-released) set of commercials for the DOH. There entire budget has been utterly slashed.
