My biggest question is if we're booking for the Other tent or the Other stage. Having one of the five stages essentially dedicated to just electronic would make a big difference in drafting strategy
I'm doing the research so be prepared to stack your Other Stage
Pretty Lights has played Ultra, Camp Bisco, Suwannee, and Electric Forest. Aphex Twin isn’t coming anywhere near those festivals. Pretty Lights also makes much more poppy music and their fan base overlaps with the cheese EDM fan base. Aphex’s does not. Bonnaroo doesn’t book IDM, especially in the last 4 years where the electronic lineup is basically Electric Forest. Those are two completely different acts so yes, it looks drastically out of place.
Aphex Twin is great, probably my favorite producer ever, but Bonnaroo would never book Aphex Twin for multiple reason.
you're not wrong, but regardless, even if we all hold ourselves to a standard and draft a certain amount of cheese, it will not be at the strictly "realistic" level of roo the last 4 years. i agree going forward Roo will never book aphex, but thats where i really agree with what Todd said. The best way to look at this is "What if Livenation never bought Roo", and they were able to maintain the size / quantity of those prime '11-'15 years. I think thats a hell of a lot more interesting than strictly holding ourselves to the lower standard of what bonnaroo has become.
Bonnaroo still wouldn’t have booked Aphex Twin before or after the Livenation takeover. Generally, Bonnaroo’s base and Aphex’s fanbase don’t overlap. Yes, Bonnaroo has book artist like Four Tet, Flylo and Caribou but those are mid tier artist whereas Aphex is a 3-5 type of act. 3-5 electronic acts have always been reserved for the Odesza’s, Skrillex’s and Flume’s of the world.
I’ll disagree with you and say it’d be more interesting than holding ourselves to strict rules of what the line up should look like because this would basically be us making lineups we always do just with some cheese EDM and jam sprinkled in. The variety here is gonna come from us being in teams and not solo. So I kinda think the team idea would be better in the normal Bonnaroo draft but that’s a different discussion.
What are the parameters on this? I'd be down if it was limited to like, "acts that have played a US festival in the last 10 years" or something and not like, Kendrick Lamar subheadlining for Jesus Christ with a Janis Joplin latenight.
three shows since 2016, not publicly declared inactive or dead

Counterpoint - how many 3-5 electronic artists are there that aren't cheese? It's like what, Aphex and Chem Bros? Maybe Prodigy and Kraftwerk? None are exactly regulars on the American festival circuit. I agree that Aphex is the least Bonnaroo-ish of the bunch, but I wouldn't think it out of the realm of possibility that Bonnaroo just wasn't able to get those sort of acts, as opposed to those slots being reserved for more mainstream fare.

If we have 12 teams and you want two 3-5 acts that’s 24 acts. There’s 24 acts that fit better in that vein than Aphex Twin

That's completely aside from the point I was making; on this point I agree with you though.

if we're really trying to hold ourselves to current roo standards we should all be forced to have at least 1 cheese headliner like Post or Twenty One Pilots, but i dont think any of us would actually find that to be more fun.
I think we should wait a little longer for people to apply. Some might be busy with work or doing something else today/night, so I think that's only fair.

I answered the first part but I missed the second part of your paragraph. Either way Bonnaroo wouldn’t book Aphex or maybe even Kraftwerk for that matter because Bonnaroo doesn’t have a history of booking these kinds of acts big or small and generally those electronic fanbases aren’t really going to Bonnaroo. You’d have an easier time arguing for Kraftwerk I think. Still don’t think I’d buy it though.

dont know how you gauge that, I liked all of 20s HLs

reserves are open until we can figure out a way to accommodate everyone Maybe we can get to 16

I haven’t read everything so I don’t know who’s side this will land on but I just want to offer my opinion. Regardless if this goes my way or not Ill have fun doing this draft.
I think the goal should be to pretend that you actually got a job offer to, with your partner, replace the two guys that book Bonnaroo. So with that very real responsibility, you want to make sure that the festival sells at least $70k tickets and thrives financially. So im not voting on who would sell the most tickets, but if I saw a lineup that I think would totally sink the festival in the year it returns from covid, I wouldn’t vote for it. The popularity of the lineup should be almost viewed as a benchmark everyone should hit (would this sell at least $70k?) as opposed to whos would sell the most.
I think we should book a lineup that carves out a MORE interesting musical identity than the fest currently has. So yes Aphex Twin should absolutely play LN Which on someones lineup.
I want to book an evolved Where in the Woods stage lineup of House / Techno DJs, though that stage would want to stay at a size of like DJ Seinfeld and not Four Tet, which I think would still land in This or That Tent if booked.
I also think our lineups should pay respect to the festivals roots / core. Dont completely abandon jam and guitars while we venture into interesting territory the actual fest fails to do. Keep some world elements. Maybe a Metal night, etc
And finally an idea Ive become very passionate about but expect no support on. I think everyone should be given the same schedule template to fill out at the beginning of the draft. Im going to receive massive pushback here and Im ready to respond to all counter points. I strongly believe this would make the entire experience more enjoyable for everyone despite the fact that all you creatives will have to agree to there being a little more order to the game. Before you let your instincts kick in, I really hope people will consider how much more focused their drafting would be throughout the process as they filled in their template. How much time this would save you at the end. No more headaches and hours of staring at start times. And how much easier it would be to compare everyones lineups at the end of the game.
Brackets work better for this kind of draft with more direction.
Oh and I think there should be 0 free agents. Make it to where after round 20 we draft 2 artists per turn. 3 per turn after 25. 5 per turn until we each have the amount of acts necessary to fill out our templates.

Jortles shooting 100% from the floor, not a single miss here.
More interesting personality?! Bonnaroo sold out last year!
Yeah Im just saying we shouldnt be taking things off the table that we wouldnt expect roo to book in 2021 like Aphex Twin. Think that should be an important point of the game. To improve Bonnaroo while still gettin this money.
