Pearl Jam is suppose to announce their May tour in January with no Boston show on original tour dates. They are a big enough band for people to forgive Rage cancelling.
They almost have to swing for the fences with an artist who's both big and won't be a huge disappointment to the RATM fans. Pearl Jam seems like one of the few bands who fit that description. As others have mentioned here, Metallica does, as well. People might grumble a little bit with Tool, NIN, or SOAD, but they'd also be suitable replacements.
Does anyone think, though, that a huge name in a different direction -- say Kayne or Billie Eilish -- would upset people too much?
Random thought -- Given that they had booked RHCP in 2020 and The Strokes are second on the bill to them on the stadium tour, is it possible that The Strokes will be a Red/Blue closer and that we're getting two more headliners, not currently known to us? #WishfulThinking
i would legitimately love if it was Harry Styles, but I'm expecting Stevie Nicks or Metallica or maybe The Who after seeing them on NOLA Jazz Fest lineup. i suppose i'd be fine with any of these
I wouldn't mind seeing The Who, but I'm not as interested in The Townshend/Daltrey Band, which is what "The Who" have been for a while now.

Yeah I’d only be interested in The Who if they brought Entwistle and Moon back into the fold
Kanye seems very possible to me. Assuming that Rage was 2M+ to book
I doubt they got that much for one second tier festival, but who knows? I do think that Boston Calling is aware that if the new top line is perceived as a big step down from 2020, they may have trouble selling pre-announcement early bird tickets ever again, so I think that we're going to see a really big name replacing Rage. Let's not forget, too, that Rage is both a rap and rock artist, so Kayne or Kendrick wouldn't be that far off the mark and would make as many people happy as the Rage cancellation disappointed.

I actually have less than a zero percent chance of considering attending this fest, but for pure comedy's sake if they could go from RATM to Dave Matthews and Kings of Leon - that would be amazing. The spin especially.
"We couldn't Rage Against The Machine but we hope you are willing to Rage with the worst parts of the Bonnaroo 2010 lineup!"
I like DMB, but that 2010 Roo set seemed mailed in
The Strokes is a weak headliner tbh. Their OSL set last year sucked. Only Albert seems to be happy to be on stage but the rest just call it in
The Strokes can be hit-or-miss live, but it's a great pick for Boston Calling. They've been headlining festivals around the world for basically a decade, so they're definitely headliner material. Combine that with the fact that they haven't played Boston in 15+ years and it's 100% a good choice. I saw them headline Shaky Knees in October and thought they sounded great. Julian is kinda a mess most of the time, but it's expected at this point.
With Metallica headlining BottleRock in California on Friday night, we should assume they'll be Sunday night here, right? I feel like it's harder to do back-to-back nights flying west to east than going the other direction, with the time change and all. (I have to miss Saturday night of BC for a wedding and saw The Strokes and Foos last year, so I'm really hoping this logic holds.)
Not my cup of tea but I’m sure it hits the right spot in a Rage replacement for most folks! I’ll probably give them a more purposeful listen in the coming months.
Neither band is my cup of tea, but this was the right business decision. The problem with replacing RATM is that there aren't any other "heavy guitar bands fronted by a rapper" big enough to headline Boston Calling, so there was no way they could have completely stuck the landing. This is about as close as they could get, though.
alright, pretty easily best case. metallica has been second on the bucket list behind rage for a while for me. let's roll
edit: also, i basically never say this, but greatest hits set please
I just checked out their recent festival setlists on Setlist.fm. Most were festivals where they headlined two nights, so it seems unlikely that they'd be representative of single night festival appearances.
Do they really have any hits other than Enter Sandman and One?
