I heard their newly released song the other day, and it reminded me a lot of My Morning Jacket, so I'm definitely going to check out more of their music and probably catch their set. They recently curated a festival and Dawes played two days, I believe, so this is probably the closest I'm going to get to seeing Dawes this year.
1. This lineup poster is 17 names per day, which lines up exactly with the 2020 poster except that 2020 had one small bottom line per day with 6-7 comedians on it. So either they're going to add the daytime arena people (comedians, etc) later, or they're doing something completely different in there.
2. In 2020 the last 4 names per day (not including the comedians) were local DJs (that people weren't pumped about) and this year the last 4-5 names per day are local bands/artists, so it seems like they made a conscious choice to make that switch. Interesting because the DJs were supposed to be in the arena, but I feel like the bands will be (mostly) outdoors. Even if they're the evening/night arena slate, there's still the afternoon gap where comedians were in the past. Maybe they just aren't using it at all? or the local bands require more downtime between sets so it'll actually take up the whole day..?
3. Both 2020 and 2022 advertise a fourth outdoor stage, but they have basically the same number of names as 2019, 2018, etc. Maybe it's 1-2 more per day, but not enough to fill a fourth stage. Will they be extending set times? or adding bands? or is the "fourth stage" going to be super underwhelming (my money is on this last one)

I'm gonna be pushing Ripe until the fest happens. It will be one of, if not the most fun set of the weekend, and it's awesome seeing a local up and coming band so high up on the lineup. Their Valentine's day House of Blues show in 2020 was my last before covid hit, and it was an absolute party.
Good to know. I feel like i've seen the name around and assumed (maybe correctly?) that they were super jammy which is not really my thing. But a quick google search shows a few horns involved, and i'm a sucker for horns. I'll check them out.
Interesting lil tidbit I saw on a FB group I’m in. Guess After the 2019 fest the Dessner brothers havent had any involvement in booking since, which would explain the shift in the lineup the for this edition and 2020 imgur.com/a/BmlJYy2

I'd bet money that it's Black Pumas -> RTJ to close Blue and Gizz -> Strokes on the Red and Green.
Id be surprised to see RTJ close the Blue, If they had to move things around and put The Strokes in what was Rages spot I wonder if they would rearrange everything for the sake of fan bases. Their previous decision to have Major Lazer into Tool makes think theyd have no problem doing RTJ into the Strokes with Gizz closing the blue
Possibly, but the distance between Gizz and The Strokes is much shorter than the one between Weezer and Tool. Neither Weezer nor Major Lazer were an obvious lead in to Tool, so it really didn't matter how they handled Red or Blue that evening.

Bingo. I had actually typed out bin one of my earlier posts, but ended up deleting it, about how the real cohesive thread through BC's lineups up to 2019 was the general sense of Aaron Dessner's hand in the curation, and that seemed to disappear in 2020. The vibe switched up a bit from lineup to lineup, especially at the top, but the undercards felt relatively consistent in their aesthetic

I would say Gizz are about as similar to The Strokes as Weezer is to Tool
Friday Foo Fighters - Want to see Rufus Du Sol - Must see Avril Lavigne - Would see Cheap Trick - Would see Paris Texas - Would see Pom Pom Squad - Want to see Born Without Bones - Want to see
Saturday The Strokes - Must see Run The Jewels - Must see King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Must see Earthgang - Would see Orville Peck - Want to see Sudan Archives - Must see Hinds - Would see Frances Forever - Want to see
Sunday Metallica - Want to see Weezer - Want to see Glass Animals - Would see Modest Mouse - Must see Goose - would see Japanese Breakfast - Must see Cults - Would see
I like your categorizations. They're more descriptive than letter grades, stars, or the Oasis album titles I used a few years ago.
I'm expecting: Friday is Cheap Trick->Avril->Haim->Foo with Oliver->Rufus closing Blue. Saturday is Pumas->RTJ->Strokes with Gizz getting a longer-than-ever-seen closing set on Blue. Sunday is Modest Mouse->Weezer->Metallica with Glass Animals closing Blue.
Haim vs Rufus and Glanimals vs Weezer would both be brutallll conflicts for me.
I'm fine with the top half of the lineup, there's some decent stuff there.
The bottom half, either I need to do a bunch of exploring or I can show up at 4 everyday.
They've definitely upped the number of local performers this year. If you don't recognize the names on the lowest lines, it's because 4-6 of them are local artists each day.
If you enjoy "sophisticated rap" -- socially conscious lyrics with jazz players in a live band -- do check out Cliff Notez. I saw him at the Davis Square ArtBeat fest in 2019. It was really good. (Of course, he has great players in his band. He's a Berklee professor.)

I could see Rufus on the Red before Foos, kinda like how ODESZA played red before Tame and Hozier was on blue
I really wish the Blue and Red closers that night had flipped stages. I could have seen Anderson .Paak -> Hozier -> Tame Impala. I didn't even bother trying to see .Paak because I didn't want to miss a minute of Hozier and also wanted to be down in front for the set, which I was.
Just judging from the listed order of acts on the poster, I'm seeing the potential for a lot of conflicts. The ones which stand out to me (based upon the artists I'd like to catch) are:
Cheap Trick - Oliver Tree (if not directly head to head, it may be difficult to make the cross-campus walk without missing one of them doing a few songs) King Gizz - Black Pumas (same thing, probably not directly head to head, but difficult to catch both in their entirety.) Orville Peck - KennyHoopla
I've tried doing the Harvard editions buffet style and felt like I barely saw the artists when I caught half a set or less, so rather than try to cram as much in as possible, I'd rather see some sets in full and miss others entirely this year.
If there is one thing BC has been consistent with in scheduling is that #2 on the day closes the Red before the Headliner on the Green, even in the face of a terrible schedule choice like Major Lazer into Tool. So I’m assuming Rufus, RTJ and Weezer will all be Red stage closers.

Rufus also has headliner tier production, theyre definitely closing red. Blue would be massively overcrowded

Their website still lists arena programming, but the world is filled with websites in which businesses forget to update information on some of the lesser visited pages beyond the homepage.
But this page doesn't seem wildly out of date. I just wouldn't count on any additional programming until we hear specifics from them. It's worth noting that the current description of the arena programming is "Featuring musical performances, DJ sets, and more," so they may have decided against comedy if they no longer mention it despite its prominent role at the three previous Harvard editions.
I just want something happening there for as much of each day as possible. That way, if the weather gets to be too much in one way or another, there's always the option to hang out there and check out whatever's happening, while waiting for the rain/heat/hail/plague of locusts to subside.

Shoot, that means that it's going to be impossible to catch all of King Gizzard and The Strokes, given the time needed to get from Blue to Green.
I really wish that they'd build in a 15 minute break between the Red and Blue closers and the start of the headliner's set. I didn't appreciate hearing Mr. Brightside start while I was in a porta-potty in 2018.

Normally, I'd pass on the electronic acts, but I checked out a little of their music on YouTube and it reminded me of Depeche Mode. I was surprised to discover that they actually have a singer and aren't just a DJ act relying upon guest vocalists. I'm definitely going to explore more and will probably catch them since I really don't like HAIM all that much.
Speaking of schedule grids, does the Boston Calling mobile app have good scheduling capabilities where you can select sets and build a daily schedule for yourself so you can refer to that, once it's built, without needing to go back to the full grid? (I finally relented and got a smartphone, between the need to use one for two-factor authentication of office software that my company uses and the ability to buy tickets to LiveNation shows.)
Boston Calling put together an 11 hour Spotify playlist of this year's artists. It's not curated with care to create a particular flow as much as it's "four songs from this artist, followed by three songs from that artist, lather, rinse, repeat..."
