I've really been getting into Earthgang since the new album came out, and it has me dreading conflicts now. I felt pretty confident I'd see everyone I wanted to see, but probs not gonna happen now, le sigh.
saturday is conflict central but i have a good feeling abt friday and sunday. My biggest fear is being unable to see the top 3 that day. Friday all I have is Foos, Rufus, Pom Pom squad and Born without bones. Sunday I got Metallica, Weezer, Modest Mouse, Jbrekkie and Horsegirl with a passive interest in Glass Animals and Goose
Isn't it always impossible to see the top 3 on any day at Boston Calling, because #2 closes Red while #3 closes Blue, right?
Whether or not MSG's newly announced straight-outta-Dr. Who London venue will impact Boston Calling in any way remains to be seen, but it's fun to speculate whether (1) artists will sign combined contracts to both headline Boston Calling and play "The Sphere" and (2) whether someone at MSG will want to experiment with applying the technology used in "The Sphere" at a music festival, in which case they'd likely conduct those experiments at the one music festival they own...Boston Calling.
In any event, this seems exciting AF and I suspect that a lot of music fans from around the world will want to go there at least once to experience it.
neat, hoping born without bones dont conflict with rufus though
on the mock I made I predicted this stage and the way I have it set up, Orange closer is conflicting green subheadliner. No clue if this is actually what they do though

nice, i gotta go in and edit mine again lol. i feel like cheap trick will be the green sub, oliver tree will be the red sub, and avril will be the blue sub. nothing to back that up except speculation. I def prefer the way you have it set up though

So, it appears that Cliff Notez, Oompa, Frances Forever, and Julie Rhodes are the local artists on the larger stages. It would seem like the two larger stage local artists each day would open Green/Red and Blue, although I can't imagine that they'd put two of Boston's most notable rap artists opposite each other on Sunday, so we'll see.
If they're smart, they'll put artists on the Orange Stage (welp, now we know why the next stage will be called the Commuter Rail Stage), throughout the day to counter program what's on the larger stages. For example, during that Friday cluster of Avril L., Cheap Trick, Oliver T., and The Struts, put Avenue on the Orange stage to provide something very different than what's happening on the other stages. (I wouldn't mind having something other than Metallica/Weezer/Glass Animals to close out the festival with.)
I'm predicting it now...the Orange Stage will be located where Fort IKEA used to be.
I swear Cheap Trick has to be the weirdest booking ive ever seen for a festival like this. just makes no sense to book them in the year 2022
If you're looking for a rock and roll band to put in that spot, either Guided By Voices or Low Cut Connie would have been a better booking.
I like Cheap Trick well enough, and I've seen them two or three times over the years (although not in the last 20 years), but I can think of a lot of 70's-80's bands that I'd rather see in the lineup. Devo would be so much fun at Boston Calling.

the war on drugs or Courtney Barnett would be my picks for that spot
So, I just checked out the site to see if they have a grounds map up yet, and they don't...but it's worth noting that they removed the reference to the Arena from the Experience page. It doesn't appear that they're presenting anything there this year.
On one level, this shouldn't come as a surprise. They've always announced the Arena performers at the main lineup drop every year.
I can live without the Arena programming, per se, but I hope that they leave it open, to provide someplace people can hang if the weather gets bad, and to ease the porta-potty lines. Having bathrooms onsite with real plumbing was a nice change of pace.

Oh, both of them would be good, but I was thinking of artists with a similar vibe to Cheap Trick.

Foo Fighters have recorded with Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick before for Sonic Highways, I would fully expect them to do that song together live that night. Foos also are friends with the Struts, and have done Under Pressure together many times. I think when they booked that day they were trying to create what has the potential to be like an "iconic magical festival moment" like Glasto gets. I myself will be in the back slurping oysters if that oyster bar is back. Foos are a fun enough get, but I'm very okay eating and drinking in the back for their set.

They've created a nice run of acts compatible with the Foos on Friday (Cheap Trick, Avril, The Struts), although neither Rufus nor HAIM are particularly well-suited to perform right before this particular headliner.
Things are no better on the other two days. I like a lot of what's happening on Saturday, but very little of it aligns well with The Strokes, once you get past HiNDS and KennyHoopla. Whether you're talking Metallica or Rage, nothing on Sunday brings the heavy in the way that the original or replacement headliners do.
For anyone actually in the Boston area, there's a three-day mostly local music festival happening at various venues in Davis Square at the end of July. I created a thread for conversation about NICE, a fest.
There are handful of drummers who've demonstrated the ability to be great hired guns when needed on relatively short notice. Kenny Aronoff may or may not still be up for this sort of thing at 69, but Josh Freese, if available, could easily step in and do a great job.
If they decide to cancel their Boston Calling set, Green Day would seem like the obvious replacement, in terms of being one of the least likely bands to disappoint people who already bought one day tickets for Friday and based upon their likely availability. The European Hella Mega tour starts on June 1, and if Weezer can play BC on Sunday night and be ready for the tour kickoff in Germany on Wednesday, a Friday night Green Day headlining set is very doable.
Pearl Jam would seem to be the other band able to fit into the spot with a minimum of complaints. They are available, but they wrap up the west coast leg of their tour a week earlier, so they'd wind up cutting their month off before their European tour short to make the cross-country trip for one festival.
