Im gonna go ahead and guess BC NEVER gives us an early act announcement again
is this fest gonna survive
If this fest can survive 2019, which from my reports was completely empty, I think it will survive this year just fine. I do think the crowd will shift older, which is so okay with me.

I was there in 2019 it wasnt completely empty, especially not for Tame and Travis

it was only empty for TOP’s day, Saturday was definitely sold out
I’m surprised Metallica + Glass Animals haven’t sold out Sunday
People may have never heard of Glass Animals, notiarity associated with being nominated for "Best new artists" can take a bit to catch on... Not like they release music before Heat Waves

Why wouldn't it? Ticket sales are what matters, not people complaining on social media.
If there's money to be made, then it'll be made.
Plus, it doesn't hurt Boston Calling that Coachella has been going through even worse headaches with their top line this year. What happened this year doesn't speak to mismanagement on the part of Boston Calling, just dumb luck in booking headliners where unavoidable personal circumstances forced the artists to drop out. At least, you can blame Coachella for not anticipating issues with the always-volatile Kanye West.
With that said, Boston Calling may want to turn away from the sort of lineup they ran with this year and book something which doesn't feel quite as nostalgic. So, here's my earlier-than-thou prediction for the 2023 Boston Calling top line.
Billie Eilish * One of the following: Kendrick Lamar/Childish Gambino/Frank Ocean/OutKast * Olivia Rodrigo.
I'd also expect them to lean back into the sort of artists near the top of the Blue stage that they've had in the past, going for a bit of the Newport Folk/Beach Road vibe. I'd expect a few of the following to play Blue in 2023 - Jason Isbell, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Hozier, Dawes, Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers, Yola, Margo Price, Allison Russell, etc. (Granted, with the first five names here, there might be a lot of wishful thinking in play on my part.)

I do think we could see 2023 skew younger, unless there's some wink wink, nod nod deal that has Rage coming back at the end of their tour. They will need to get a bigger pop or hip hop act for next year if they want to try and shake their dad rock vibes and keep the multi-genre feel alive though.
They also could have thought they booked 2019 more for the younger audience, and if that ended up as a bit of a miss maybe they want to go a different direction.

I am going to assume next year skewers for a younger audience. There is 0% chance MSG walks away from the one festival they have ownership of, plus like others said they ran into a ton of bad luck with COVID/RATM/Foos.
2019 was packed for Travis and Tame was pretty good as well. TOP shouldn't be headlining anywhere in my opinion.

I don't mean to sound snarky but I really don't understand why some people are legitimately mad that NIN is the replacement and begging for refunds. NIN isn't my favorite but I can recognize that they put on a great show and Trent is literally a musical genius. Can someone explain this to me, genuinely?
FF is probably over for the next few years if ever. What did people expect boston calling to do? People are seriously acting like they had any choice in the matter. I can understand getting upset about RATM dropping since it's clear BC knew much sooner that we did, and even RHCP too. But the Foos? I'm legit disgusted with some of the comments I'm reading on websites that aren't inforoo.

Never accept the first offer.
The real ones are holding out for Swedish House Mafia x NIN

What year was it that had Flume and Major Lazer? If they can survive that year, they can survive anything. It was a smaller fest then but most of the rock fans that go to BC were begging people to take their tickets for that day and it wasn't packed at all like the years after when they stopped booking EDM entirely.
If I'm reading Wikipedia right, NIN right now is only Trent and Atticus
Trent and Atticus are the only two official members but they have Robin Finck, Ilan Rubin, and Alessandro Cortini as touring members still unless Trent decides to shake things up

thats so bizarre considering in 2016 Disclosure and Odesza had massive crowds
To be clear I don’t think this is their fault. One band had their drummer recover slower than expected from an ACL tear and the other’s drummer died, there’s nothing that BC could have really done but still two very tough breaks
Billie Eilish * One of the following: Kendrick Lamar/Childish Gambino/Frank Ocean/OutKast * Olivia Rodrigo.
I honestly hope they don't go for Billie or Olivia. They're both super talented but I really don't wanna have to fight hoardes of teens for tickets because guarantee those BC tickets are gonna be cheaper than seeing either of them separately. Also, a lot of those teens have no clue about fest etiquette and will probably camp at whatever stage Olivia/Billie is on and the potential for rudeness is unfortunately very high. I know it won't be as bad as Travis Scott, but I think it will end up like Beyonce at Coachella, where people didn't understand you don't get too much personal space at concerts and you can't really save spots for people that aren't there.
I say this as someone who grew up going to NSync concerts and having the girls behind me scream MORE when they say my 7 year old ears couldn't handle the screaming. I'm talking legit screeches.

Those two groups transcend what "EDM" is and are fairly mainstream as legitimate musical groups. Google says Flume and Major Lazer was 2013, but that day also had Passion Pit who was huge at the time and Kendrick Lamar. I could see a lot of people just there for the dad rock not loving that. I mean hell, I got my 2 tickets free that year from someone's dad who didn't want to go.
This kid is seriously out here tagging the Better Business Bureau and a band called False Advertising 🤦♀️
Someone on reddit had a pretty long list if shit they apparently went though and managed to get their money back. Im talking BBB, contacting the MA AG, small claims filings.... it was wild.

There was the expected comment on Instagram, under BC's announcement post, from someone who complained that Boston Calling should have replaced the Foo Fighters with an eye towards making the headliners more diverse in terms of gender, etc.
As I and someone else replied, they had to go for an artist who would keep the one-day ticket buyers interested in seeing the Foo Fighters happy. Stevie Nicks is really the only female fronted headliner big enough for BC who is on the circuit this year and isn't playing Boston. The poster mentioned Robyn, Sia, and Janelle Monet as artists whom they could have booked, as they did before (ignoring the fact that it's a bigger festival now.)
While NIN isn't a perfect fit to replace the Foos, I'm sure that they reached out to Pearl Jam and Green Day and got a "no" before booking NIN. As was the case with RATM, Foo Fighters occupy a unique lane and there really isn't anyone else in that lane big enough to headline Boston Calling. They've got the Nirvana and Germs lineage, and aren't exactly mainstream rock, but neither of the cancelling headliners really have any close counterparts. With a lot of genres -- rap, pop, metal, jam, EDM, and Americana, for example -- it would be really easy to identify artists who could replace a cancelling headliner and keep a lot of people happy, but sometimes the uniqueness that helps propel an artist to the top makes it difficult to find an ideal replacement for them.
What could be really interesting is how Boston Calling, or any festival, handles positive COVID-19 tests among performers and last minute cancellations for that reason. My guess is that they'd do what the touring Guinness Fleadh did at their one Boston edition in the late 90's when their headliner canceled at the last minute -- extend the subheadliner's set length. You could do that anywhere in the lineup, really. As long as people keep an eye upon the Boston Calling app for schedule changes, that could work.

Dude that show is going to blow your mind just based off of their movie scores over the past decade. Wow.
Oh, a lot of bands have only a couple of "official" members and then also have touring members. This usually means that the "official" members share in the profits from the usual sources, while the touring members are paid a fixed amount for playing the shows.

In fall 2013, they put all of the rock on one day and all of the EDM/rap on the other day. Not a bad way to move a ton of one day passes at a then-small festival with only one stage active at a time.
