They posted a couple names last summer then went completely silent. It completely feels like they have no idea what they're doing. I've had a ticket for this fest since the summer of 2019, you don't need to put incoherent garbage in my mouth
So you think radio silence from the cancelation last Feb until sometime next week/later this month would have been the play? Sorry not trying to be overly aggressive, I just get annoyed when people shit on music festivals for doing things "the wrong way"
I want them to commit to something. If they're gonna drop 2 names every month, cool, do that. Don't just do it for a bit then go silent
This lineup rollout has been really bad all over tbh, why did they give like 5 random names and then just dip
This is some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard, if its honestly how you feel it means you care more about hype and exclusivity then the final product of the festival, its essentially saying "Fuck BC for letting us know a handful of lineup acts before we should"....

Wow, you really came to the wrong place then.
Yeah yeah, I know, just feels like Foo/Rage/Strokes is a pretty good top line for BC, hell even Foo/Strokes/???? isnt half bad, but I know people will shit on the line up because it isnt the Foo/Rage/RCHP of 2020, even though people bitched and moaned when RCHP were announced back in the day

I chalk it up to Boston Calling being unable or unwilling to move to a late summer/early fall weekend in 2020 and wanting to throw a bone to festival goers who rolled their tickets over two years in a row, as well as sell more early bird tickets by throwing a few names out there.
The dilemma is that it's generally the top two lines that sell tickets; Sudan Archives, Celisse, and KennyHoopla might all have great performances at Boston Calling, but they're not going to drive early ticket sales in a meaningful way.

March 31 has been Rage's first date from the start, none have been canceled yet
Correct, I just edited my post after looking at their page and mistakenly assuming that Coachella was in March.
In any event, they're more likely to postpone or cancel the earliest dates, rather than wipe out the entire tour at once. I'm sure that Boston Calling and any other festivals they may have booked need them to commit one way or the other ASAP.
Twitter festival rumor guru The Festival Owl seems convinced that RATM is definitely not doing Coachella, but he hasn't posted anything about their tour or other festival appearances.
He also seems to think that we won't see a wave of festival cancellations.
This article in Variety all but confirms a Coachella top line of Kanye, Billie Eilish, and either Swedish House Mafia or another headliner w/ SHM subheadlining.
The strange thing is that every article I've been able to find hasn't listed a reason they've dropped out. Knowing that reason might make clear whether Boston Calling will be impacted by a top line change, too.
Kanye for BC lets GOOO. in all seriousness i’m very pleased with him playing coachella. I think it’ll be a rock band if they end up having to replace Rage here

Other rock names out there seem like slim pickings, based off the current lineups/rumors, Tool is like the only other rock act in the US (Other than Tame but that wouldn't happen). If they are able to pull someone with semi-ease from Primavera, maybe Beck or The National given BC has ties to Dessner although I could see folks balking at the National being headliner status and they were just here 2 fests ago, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Still hopping they are booking in a way that is just avoiding some of the more mainstream hip hop acts, the likes of Post, Jack Harlow, Cardi B, Megan, ect just dont do anything for me personally. And if they weren't kind of planning for it, almost like they did for Sunday in 2019, it would be such a weird fit.

100% agree with this. It would be a huge bummer to lose Rage in the first place, but to double down on the loss by bringing in one of those names instead of a good replacement would be really rough.

When should we expect the lineup? Bottlerock and Bonnaroo are releasing on Monday and Tuesday, respectively. Really hoping that they aren’t dealing with a Rage cancellation.

if it's next week I'd expect it on Wednesday or Thursday (I think that's when, in the past, they've announced) but if they ARE dealing with rage, which idk by all (tho, unconfirmed) accounts it SOUNDS like rage wants to call it off, it may be the 3rd week of Jan. who knows, BC doesn't have the clout coach has when it comes to getting headliners fast so if they lost rage it could take a longer time lol
Really hoping NIN is the Rage replacement assuming theyre cancelling the tour. fingers crossed
They or Metallica are prob the two that would keep me in
The challenge they have in replacing RATM is that Rage and the Chili Peppers are really the only huge "funky with heavy guitar" bands capable of headlining Boston Calling. It's not like there's a whole genre filled with acts at that level. If you booked Kanye, Kendrick, or Gambino to headline your festival and they dropped out, few would complain if you replaced him with one of the other two.
While there any number of acts who'd be very good-to-great in the role of headliner, you're going to need someone in the broader "heavy, but interesting" category, like Metallica, NIN, Tool, or System Of A Down to quell the disappointment among people who bought tickets for this edition or rolled them over from the previous two years because they wanted to see Rage Against The Machine.
So many people who bought early bird passes in 2016 were disappointed when they swapped out a lot of the indie rock and Americana of previous editions for a lineup with a much stronger focus upon dance-electronic-pop artists. To avoid this from happening again, they've got to balance keeping previous ticket buyers happy with generating a spike in festival pass sales once the entire lineup is revealed. The Strokes will probably be good for the 7K - 12K people who've been waiting for them to return to the Boston area for the first time in 15+ years, but the Rage replacement should ideally both appeal to RATM's audience and sell at least 20K one day or multiple day passes on their own.

Having seen both id accept Bino, he just needs a great album. he has a lot of great songs and a beautiful show production, just never released a consistently good project. That said idk if either of them or Kanye would ever play this fest again. It seems they want a clear rebrand with the RAWK headliners
