Boston Calling made what seemed like an eminently reasonable decision a few months ago, given the vaccine rollout circa Feb & Mar.
Flash forward to one week before Memorial Day weekend, and New England, as a whole, leads the nation in vaccination rollout, and everything opens up in Mass on Saturday, May 29.
Meanwhile, it feels like Coachella and Boston Calling are the only notable festivals which aren't moving forward with a 2021 edition.
I sure hope that they make it up to us by improving the lineup (they can start by swapping out nationally-known comedians & DJs for the 100% local lineup they put on the 2020 poster). It would be nice if they added a Thursday night lineup similar to Friday nights on City Hall Plaza with three acts on one stage.
The least they could do for us -- and I mean the very least -- is make sure that they're the first festival to drop its lineup after Coachella this December. It'll be doubly frustrating if we're seeing 2022 lineups drop for Gov Ball, Hangout, Firefly, etc. when we've been waiting the longest for some good news.
Also, looking at some of the festival lineups to drop so far, the punkafunkachunka sludgy riffs 'n' beats top line extravaganza they booked across-the-board for 2020 seems like a stale lineup to run with in 2022. Keep RATM, since their reunion has been pushed back until next year, but drop the Foos and (especially) RHCP, and have one of Taylor Swift/Billie Eilish/Miley Cyrus headline one night and a sufficiently melodic, non-heavy rock act headline another night (The Cure, Florence + the Machine, MMJ, whomever else decides to reunite and could fit this slot nicely).
This feels so pre-2013 when Boston music fans saw every other metro area of its size have a big festival while we had nothing.

I agree that Rage is staying, based on their whole tour getting pushed back and the schedule lining up. I think RHCP are more likely to stay than Foo Fighters, since Foo Fighters are actively doing other festivals this year and RHCP hasn't announced anything. Feels like they're most likely pushing everything they had planned back to 2022. As for Foo Fighters, it's possible they would do a fall-to-spring tour and Boston Calling would end up on the tail end of it, so I wouldn't be shocked if we kept all 3, really. They're just the least likely to stay on the bill.
I wouldn't hold your breath for any improvements. They took a beating and probably lost a ton of money by having 2 years of no festival, especially with how far along planning had been in 2020. We'll honestly be lucky to get something of the same level as the 2020 lineup/experience/overall plan. I do expect that they drop the headliners in the fall, like they did in fall 2019 leading up to the onsale for 2020. Beyond that, I think they just go back to doing a full lineup release in late January like always.

Well, after three festival-free years by next spring, anything will sound good to me.
I'm getting to an age where I don't know how many years of festival-going I have left in me, so I'm hoping for at least one or two appealing (to me) Boston Calling lineups in the next couple of years.
I'm thinking about catching a second 2022 festival somewhere east of the Mississippi next year. If the last year and half has taught me anything, it's that waiting too long for anything raises the possibility that your last chance to experience something may have already passed you by.
Billie Eilish just announced a TD Garden date in late Feb. I'm inclined to think that this rules her out as a potential headliner at Boston Calling next year, but The Killers played there in January 2018, came very close to selling out, and then their Boston Calling headlining spot was announced before the Garden show happened.
I suppose that if Eilish sells out quickly enough, the same thing could happen again with her.
Worst Case: They just formally announce 2022 dates and a super-earlybird blind presale.
Most Likely: They confirm the 3 headliners from 2020 are coming back for 2022.
Best Case: They surprise announce a fall concert or 1-day smaller fest or something for later this year. (This is never happening.)
The only problem with confirming headliners now is that it locks them into a top line which they may want to change if there's some not-yet-announced reunion tour or new supergroup which becomes a big draw for 2022.

Headliners for big fests tend to get booked well in advance anyway. This isn't out of the ordinary, especially if they got rolled over from 2020.

My money is still on Rage/RHCP/Foo Fighters, which I'll be just as happy with as I was 18 months ago. I wouldn't hate if Foos swap out for Lorde, though. (NIN to me is a downgrade but I just don't care about them like a lot of people do. I understand that may be an unpopular opinion.)
Notes from the ticket descriptions that seem interesting:
"General Admission tickets provide access to all artist performances across 5 stages, including admission to the arena" Red, Blue, Green, Arena = 4..? I vaguely remember it saying 5 in 2020, too, right? They just never said anything about where a new one would be..?
Under VIP: "New for 2022 – Double decker viewing platform with dramatic views of both the Red Stage and the Green Stage!" Does this mean they're going to make the VIP area in the middle of the main stages instead of separate VIP spots off to each side (with the middle all GA)?

they added a DJ stage with local DJs no one cared about in 2020 and I guess they’re keeping it?
Since it sounds like all 3 headliners are going to return, it’ll be interesting to see what the undercard shakes up to look like.
agreed. i think some artists like Iann Dior, Phoebe Bridgers are gonna be either way higher on the lineup or not returning.
Good point. Two years is a long time in popular music, and a bunch of acts on the 2020 undercard will have have much larger audiences by spring 2022. (Really, more like 2-1/2 years, given when acts are actually booked.)
any final guesses for the mystery headliner? im thinking either Stevie Nicks, The Strokes, NIN, Gorillaz, or The Killers(lol). Feeling Good about a prima headliner since logan is great for artists flying to europe
