I think the festival radius clause is probably large enough that he couldn't do a Worcester show, especially not in an arena. If he was doing Worcester in March and it was somewhere clearly too small like the Palladium, then maybe it could work. I'd say he's ruled out.
Everything about the DCU booking seems weird and seems like grabbing whatever was available to fill the tour spot. But it could technically fit some “No Boston Shows” clause, let’s not forget Killers played the garden in Jan 2018. Feel like Tyler could be a slightly more affordable headlining act and BC doesn’t seem to mind rebooking acts if they fit the bill.

To me, the big difference is that the lineup will likely have to come out in January. Which was after The Killers show, and would be way before this Tyler show. If we weren't talking about a headliner, I think it'd be possible for them to cover up a "TBA" slot or something (they did with The Decemberists back in City Hall like 5 years ago or something) but I don't think they ever would for a headliner.

I suspect that the Tyler show would need to sell out quickly enough, before they have to book the third headliner, for him to be in play. I remember checking the Ticketmaster seating availability for The Killers at the Garden when they were announced for BC, and if I'm recalling it correctly, there were far less than 100 tickets left when BC announced its lineup.
if they cant get rhcp im fully expecting the third headliner to be a big 90s rock band to keep with the theme. I have a good feeling about NIN for that reason. especially given theyre touring with Pixies whom are from boston, would be awesome seeing them play again. even with no Kim Deal they still put on a killer show
I want to come back! ...but it's not going to be for the Foo Fighters...
come for rage
If I can get one more headliner I like (hopefully Tyler) and a decent undercard for my partner and I, I definitely will. That was the plan in 2020, but now we can see Rage & RTJ in Pittsburgh, so it's harder to justify the long drive or a flight.
Silk Sonic just announced a full length LP dropping in January. Really, they wouldn't be a bad choice at all for the third headlining spot, if Boston Calling wants to go in a different direction. If they put together a live show filled with both group and solo hits, their festival-friendly set would provide some nice balance to the top line.
It wouldn't surprise me to see the third spot headlined by "The National & Friends." The friends being, of course, Bon Iver, Jack Antonoff, and Taylor Swift performing a lot of folklore/evermore material.
Call it intuition, but I have a feeling that Kanye West will be going all in on the festival circuit next year. He'd be a big draw, and he's never played Boston Calling before.
Honestly, I could go for a nice lineup drop soon, because with Delta variant numbers skyrocketing right about and so many breakthrough infections (and my advanced age), I'm staying out of seated outdoor venues and all indoor venues until the numbers drop significantly. Which means that I'm likely missing three of my top dozen favorite bands in the next 30 days. So, I'm ready for all sorts of 2022 drops and announcements.

if i've said it once, i've said it a million times

The billing on the website is interesting. Assuming RTJ is closing red before Rage, HAIM's also gotta be a red stage closer before either Foo or the unknown 3rd headliner. My guess for Black Pumas is second to last on green stage, but we gotta wait to see where the rest of the names fill in

Yeah, Haim is definitely a red stage closer, as is RTJ. Not surprised given the venues they're playing these days.

Don't forget about the Blue Stage. Anyone presumed to be closing Red could just as easily be closing Blue (except for RTJ who are opening the entire RATM tour and are a lock to close Red on RATM's night.)
Which means that the Blue closer on Rage night has got to be Americana/Indie folk-rock or Pop Punk/Emo, since they're not likely to put rap, R&B, or EDM head-to-head with RTJ.

Blue stage closers are generally smaller than the red stage closers (not always though) so since HAIM is billed above RTJ (definite red stage closer) they're probably also a red stage closer
These are great adds IMO. Sudan Archives, an electro-violin-R&B artist, should be unlike anything else, and make a great, chill afternoon set. Stuff like this- outside my usual listening/ concert-going habits- is why I love festivals.
Haim never caught my attention until their outstanding album "Women in Music, Part III"- one of my favorites of 2020. Vampire Weekend fans will notice Rostam's many subtle instrumental and production touches, which really elevate the album.

Eh...Hozier's last headlining run in Boston was two nights at the Wang, while ODESZA's last gig was one night at the House of Blues. And Brandi Carlile's definitely bigger than Logic.
And if you had to bet your last dollar upon whether Weezer or Major Lazer would sell more tickets in Boston, you'd bet on Weezer.

So, let the speculation begin. Will there be U.S. festival dates next year and could Boston Calling be in play (or are they just going to do North American headlining dates between Primavera and the fall UK/European tour)?

the only festival they might play before Primavera would be Coachella and I dont think that is going to happen because they are supposedly going to play Primavera LA next fall
Yeah I can’t see them playing any dates before prima, that show was announced over 2 years ago at this point lol
Sadly, the article about the reunion tour on Consequence positioned it very much as a European tour, with no mention or even speculation about North American dates.
Oh well, I'm glad I got a chance to see the 2010 reunion tour.
