Fuck. Looks like I have take back any bad things I've said about UCF. From reports, Tennessee made him an offer he couldn't turn down.
yeah from what I've read, this is a home run hire. Which is good. All of our last few AD's have been kinda shiz (except that Barnes hire). Lots of speculation about keeping Steele as interim for a year. Next year is going to suck no matter what with all the transfers out, potential NCAA penalties, etc, that may not be a bad idea.
I'm seeing some chatter from Clemson and UT fans saying the new AD is gunning for an offensive minded coach, and looking at Clemson OC Tony Eliot.
Considering we're entering potential sanctions and general disarray, I'd be more inclined to look for someone with HC experience, but Eliot has been at Clemson for like a decade learning under Dabo, and has won a couple Nattys. (albeit, Pruitt also won a couple nattys and coached under Jimbo and Saban, so...)

I think it depends on who we can get. If they can pull someone that would be in contention no matter what, yeah, hire him. If it's going to be more about just getting someone in so someone is in, wait it out a year. We're going to be like 2-10 no matter who is coaching. No need to tie ourselves to an okay coach for years just to fill the position quick.

I'd be surprised if Tony takes that job. He hasn't seemed to be interested in any job that he's been mentioned for so far. He's being really picky. I doubt Tennessee is the job he leaves Clemson for.

I was curious on your take. As you might imagine, we're at that stage where I think every coach in the country that could possibly ever come here is being linked to the job. Good to know how realistic some scenarios are. I have a feeling Tennessee is going to swing for the fences on this one, so there's people in the play that might not have been otherwise. That being said, it's not a great situation to jump into, so money can only talk so much.

Reports are that Tennessee has vetted Sonny Dykes, PJ Fleck and Tony Elliott for the job. Looks like they are not playing around with trying to get this done this off season.
I'm not seeing any of the more reputable reporters picking this story up yet. As expected, there's a contingent of Tennessee fans who already hate Elliott because he has no HC and no #sec experience. The depths to which homers think the SEC is operating on a different level is really laughable sometimes.

Yea, I haven’t seen it anywhere else. We’ll see.
Given the amount of followers he has, I feel like he may just be one of those people that swings big trying to increase his reputation. From a couple reports, Elliott is the new AD's prime target, so it's not a bad choice to guess on.

Counterpoint- we have gambled on a lot of dudes hoping they would be a good HC in the P5. He better be good within 3ish years or people will flip out; which I feel does not set him up for success. If he is the guy, obv hope he works out, but for all the hype about the programs which allegedly wanted him as a HC so bad, none of them seemed to spring for it.

That three year turnaround expectation makes Tennessee such a less attractive job. I don't think anyone is gonna get Tennessee an SEC title in the next three years. If that's going to be the bar, we're going to be stuck in a revolving door forever.
I'm also enjoying how people are so much more positive on Matt Campbell this time around since he got dismissed last time.

For sure. Idk if SEC title would quite be it, but we need to be competing at some level. The fanbase has just been too jaded with repeatedly being sold fools gold at 24k price while successful coaches are being hired and fired all around us.

That 24k price is part of it, I think. It's one thing to take a chance on someone. It's another to drop the contracts on them that we do. I think the idea that Pruitt isn't going to get a buyout is the only thing that kept some fans off the ledge.
And in case you're wondering what the guys at the Athletic wrote:
6. All the Gruden rumors 5. "The John Currie/Mike Leach interview that wasn’t" 4. Fulmer becoming the AD, 2017 3. The riot when Kiffin left for USC 2. Pruitt getting fired and Fulmer "retiring" 1. Greg Schiano

UT Fans: We need a head coach not an assistant coach! AD White: Got it. UT Fans: We need someone with SEC experience! AD White: Check. UT Fans: We need a young coach who is gonna stick around. AD White:
I mean, it's a horrible hire, but...Vol Twitter is a big reason they are in the place they are in.
Vol Twitter is certainly not helping matters.
They get set on certain people and refuse to come off it. Multiple comments about how Jeff Fisher was interested and why didn't they pursue him further. Also, I still couldn't get over how many Lane Kiffin supporters there were.
They also refuse to see the job for what it is. Late January is a horrible time to take over no matter what school it is. There is a real potential for significant punishment to come down from the NCAA in the near future. We're years removed from being relevant but have a fan base that expects results tomorrow. Given all this, there's a good sized number of people who expect any coach would fall over themselves to come here, and the only reason they wouldn't is because the administration is incompetent.
Lastly, I will say that there is going to be a certain amount of bad optics for White for his first hire to be a guy that was his coach at his last school. He has to expect to take a beating for that alone.
Seems like a good hire. He did well following Frost at UCF.
Depends how you define well. Their record and recruiting rankings regressed every year, but their offensive rankings improved. But I know OU and missouri fans weren't happy with his offenses.
I just don't get the optics of white hiring a guy a he hired at UCF. Of potential sanctions/January hiring were obstacles, let Steele keep the interim tag for a year and ride it out. Save the buyout money for a better offer to someone next year.

We should form a search firm comprised of posters in this thread, who dispense advice such as "hey, hire the guy you were the boss of a week ago at another school" and we could do this service for less than 100k I think.

I'm leery of the guy who followed the guy at a place, with the caveat that if the guy who followed was already with the program, which is the Drinkwitz corollary. This is the Shaka Smart theory of coaching hires.

we've got so much regional variance!
We’ll be who they go to whenever they’re doing a “national “ coaching search.
Just had a thought. We could make this a draft. Give this team a new coach or qb.
